   Extractions: OPTICON is an EU sponsored network of astronomers. It has a number of different goals, one of which is the co-operative operation of medium-sized (2-4m) European telescopes. It is possile that this activity can be extended to encompass educational uses of small telescopes. I will outline the plans which OPTICON has for small to medium sized telescopes as part of the EU 6th framework programme. Then I will raise the question of how the various programmes using telescopes for science education and inspiration can be brought together as an integrated whole ranging from schoolchildren, through undergraduate teaching to post-graduate training. When such a group really clicks, there is an incentive to play again in that configuration. Some groups are so comfortable together that they become long standing affairs, lasting years or even decades. But even in those cases, the individual members also get involved in other ad hoc situations. The musicians in the quartet heard on this CD have often worked together in duos. For example, John Butcher's duos with the other three members can be heard on FONETIKS EMANEM 4049 The four musicians involved are four of the most creative, inventive and original around today. All four specialise in extracting unheard of sounds from their respective instruments, and using them to make profound group (and solo) music. It must be emphasised that no amplification or other form of electronics were used - there were no loudspeakers in sight.

Part opera, part oratorio, part passion and (thanks to director Peter Sellars) part audiovisual treatise, "El Nino" may divide audiences who have already pigeonholed Adams. One might expect such a response to a composer who has not ceased growing or reconfiguring his profile (from minimalist to unclassifiable neo-romantic) in the two decades since he became the S.F. Symphony's first composer-in-residence. The collaborators in this venture received a standing ovation after Thursday's first North American performance, but the full house had grown noticeably thinner by the conclusion of the two- part, 2 1/2-hour premiere. That Adams' fully tonal style caresses and often challenges the ear cannot be denied. That listeners will wrestle with categorization at the expense of wrapping themselves in the work is also true.

Though Davies stood somewhat apart from the main currents of thought both without and ‘within his church, and was largely unknown to English audiences or readers, he exercised a strong influence on Welsh life and thought in the 19th century. He was a serious student, especially Of anti-theistic positions, a good speaker, and a frequent contributor to Welsh theological journals. Several of his articles have been. collected and published, the most noteworthy being expositions on The First Epistle of John (1889), Ephesians (2 vols., 1896, 1901), Psalms (1897), Romans (1902); and The Atonement and Intercession of Christ (1899, English trans. by D. E. Jenkins, 1901). 1 Edited by Henry Morley in his Ireland under Elizabeth and James I. (1800). Catholic nominee, Sir John Everard, who had been installed, was forcibly ejected. In the capacity of speaker he delivered an excellent address reviewing previous Irish parliaments. He resigned his Irish offices in 1619, and sat in the English parliament of 1621 for Newcastle-under-Lyme. With Sir Robert Cotton he was one of the founders of the Society of Antiquaries. He was appointed lord chief justice in 1626, but died suddenly (December. 8th) before he could enter on the office. He had married (1609) Eleanor Touchet, daughter of George, Baron Audley. She developed eccentricity, verging on madness, and wrote several fanatical books on prophecy.
