Extractions: I have your letter of Oct. 17th, and feel a little embarrassed in answering by the paucity of autobiographical detail that would be suited to your purpose.(I'm not nearly old enough yet to write my Confessions!) As for my education, that's easy enough to answer, since it has been mainly self-conducted, highly irregular, and largely a matter of following my own vagrant and varying inclinations. I did graduate from grammar school and register for entry into high school. But my real education began with the reading of Robinson Crusoe (unabridged), Gulliver's Travels , the fairy tales of Andersen and the Countless D'Aulnoy, The Arabian Nights and (at the age of 13) Poe's Poems. Poe seems to have confirmed me in a more or less permanent slant. which led later to Baudelaire and the French Romantic School. Beckford's Vathek , read at the age of 15, was another early influence. I did a lot of boyhood scribbling, imitations of Omar, lurid Oriental romances, etc.; and at l7 sold several pseudo-Orientales to the Black Cat and The Overland Monthly . Curiously enough, after that I wrote little but poetry for a number of years, and dabbled a lot in painting and drawing, the pictures being mainly grotesques and fantastic exotic landscapes. I think it was mainly Lovecraft's interest and encouragement (I began to correspond with him in 1922) which led me to experiment with weird fiction. My first genuinely weird tale, "The Abominations of Yondo", was written in 1925 and appeared in.

Extractions: Published: 1949 Any novel which contains the sentence "Thank the pantheon they'd packed his pills and disinfectants, without which he felt half a man!" is worth reading for that alone. Apart from its humour, it reflects the likely attitude of a real Western traveller in a primitive unhygenic environment far better than the vast majority of stories of this type ( A Planet Called Krishna basically being a fantasy novel with a thin science fiction veneer). Victor Hasselborg is a detective who, despite specialising in insurance fraud cases, is hired to find the missing daughter of Syrian businessman Yussuf Batruni. When he discovers that she has fallen for a Casanova and taken an interplanetary trip with him, Hasselborg has to follow, however unwillingly, to the backward planet of Krishna. There, because of the policy of non-interference with the native culture (decades before Star Trek 's Prime Directive), he has to abandon his high-tech equipment before having his hair dyed green and a pair of false antennae fitted so he can pass as a native Krishnan. He is at least permitted to retain his pills! It is Hasselborg's jaundiced reaction to the charms of Krishna which makes de Camp's novel different even now from the usual run of fantasy literature. In style it is reminiscent of Clifford D. Simak, though I think this came first, and it is enjoyable and not particularly taxing.

Extractions: Steve This story has a wonderful start (not counting the prologue); when New York attorney Allister Park wakes up things seem a little different. First he is wearing a pair of pyjamas he doesn't own and then to confirm it, he now has a moustache - one he didn't have the night before. Also he is now Mr. Arthur Vogel. This continues daily until he becomes a Christian Bishop in an America originally colonised, although not completely, by the Vikings in the 10th Century. He then has to survive in this strange land, learn the language and figure out why he is there. Now I have a great liking of alternate earth stories and de Camp's take on this is very good. He uses a pivot in history to divert from the world we know I found to be very original (I hadn't even heard of it) and develops his world in a highly believable manner. The characters are believable, the situation consistent, and (due to its being a novella) the action is fast paced. The only criticism I might even start to level is that the lead character is a little too succesful in his dealings in the world in which he finds himself, but this is a minor point. This is good SF, it maybe a familiar concept now, that of alternate earths, but de Camp wrote this in 1940 and it still holds up exceptionally well. This is well worth reading.
