Maker of offspring is only one of the many roles of production and consumption Delany has undertaken over the last 30 years. He is also an endlessly prolific novelist, a teacher, a nonjudgmental sugar daddy, a gourmet, and an imbiber of fine spirits When orality is as abundant and as well meaning as Delany's, one can't really object to his bringing into the world one more intelligent individual. So we've decided to accept him into our pantheon of Critics of the Nuclear Family. His writing offers a myriad of alternatives to the romantic dyad and the conventional family, as does his original bisexual life style. Pagan phenomena of every sort spring from his brilliant brain, ample loins, and sensitive fingertips as if from some sort of Supreme Being. The prolific author of fiction began his career at 20 in 1962 with the publication of The Jewels of Aptor. Dhalgren, a novel published in 1975, established him permanently as one of the most controversial writers of the science fiction genre, partly because of its frank portrayal of diverse sexualities. Today the book has been re-released by Wesleyan.

Extractions: he first scene of "The Graveyard Heart," by the late science-fiction writer Roger Zelazny, takes place at a party on New Year's Eve of the year 2000. It's a tale of fabulous wealth, beautiful women, and tiny ceramic dogs; of people who behave like vampires, and love that spans the centuries. It's a story I plan to reread on the big evening, as I wait to see if the lights stay on past midnight or if my word processor still works the next morning. It's hard to believe that story was written almost 40 years ago. But it's a tale to send the mind ahead to contemplate what science fiction suggests the future might actually hold, once it gets hereas, with or without us, it inevitably does. My best hope for New York City is that having persisted for a few hundred years into the third millennium, it will be remembered as the greatest city of the last century of the second millennium. In 3000 it may be recalled as rich, romantic, horrifying in many of its aspects, with a rep-utation much like the Athens of classical Greece has today, or possibly Rome; or maybe the medieval Paris of the murderer, thief, and poet Francois Villon. If we're lucky, New York City might survive as an exotic name, like Nineveh or Syberisis; but if the culture continues to change at its present rate, New York's legacy might be more like that of Cambodia's Angkor Wata deserted space, forgotten and overgrown, somewhere in the world that foreigners rarely visit.

Ich wage ein Gegenvotum: Dhalgren ist für mich mit Abstand Delany's bestes Buch (ich habe auch seine restlichen durchgelesen, auch das in-scene vielgerühmte Babel-17 und Nova). Ich habe ihn immer als mittelguten Space-Opera-Autor empfunden, vor Dhalgren war er mir (meine Meinung) zu konventionell, danach hat er sich für meinen Geschmack zu sehr darauf konzentriert, das Thema Homosexualität in einen pseudo-progressiven Kontext zu verpacken. Man mag freilich berechtigt in Frage stellen, ob einem das heute noch viel bringt, sich den 1000-Seiten-Dhalgren anzutun, wo die Tabus doch längst gebrochen sind. Delany als einen "monumentalen Zuspätkommer" abzuqualifizieren, erscheint mir aber nicht wirklich gerechtfertigt. Das Buch kam (meines Wissens, man korrigiere mich) erstmals 1974 auf den Markt, zu einer Zeit, als das Internet für uns alle noch darned weit weg war.

Many readers frequent genre fiction, of which there is a plentiful supply. Some genre fiction is considered literary, some is not, though every genre has its respected individuals. Samuel R. Delany is one such within and without the realm of science-fiction. Delany was the English Department's Distinguished Visiting Writer for the fall semester. While on campus, Delany conducted a week and a half long workshop and read from his books, Atlantis (Delany's most recent release) and Tales of Neveryön . At least, initially there was a strong resemblance. Cultural taboos prohibit any pair from producing more than one offspring plus the occasional pilgrimage to a high Rad site encourage an ever larger gene pool and with every generation divergence from the human mold increases. With the human form the aliens also acquire human content. Somehow Humanity's baggage of archetypes is resonating from beyond the grave. The aliens are compelled to assimilate "the rationale of this world [Earth]", from Greek mythology to legendary Ringo (Starr, that is) the Silent One, demi-god of rhythm. In a rural corner of this psychedelic environment lives Lo Lobey, a young goat herd and musician. Born and raised in the village, Lobey marks his days with its lessons, hunts, and feasts around the fire. In time he discovers his true love, but Friza is soon lost to Kid Death and Lobey's life turns upside down. Spurred by the village elders, he sets off on a quest to find and best Kid Death, hoping to win back Friza's life in the process. His journey will take him across jungle and desert, from one twisted, yet vaguely familiar character to another, to the great City by the Sea and his ultimate confrontation with Kid Death. In The Einstein Intersection Delany explores the concepts of collective unconscious, archetype, and myth. If you haven't twigged by now, Lobey is tracing the path of Orpheus into an urban Hades, armed only with music and the hope of reuniting with his lost love. Read closely and other legendary figures may also come forth, a mind boggling array from Clint to Christ. However, exactly what Delany is trying to convey in the exploration was difficult for me to discern. Although he certainly held my attention with this one-sitting read, when I closed the covers I felt more confused than enlightened. Is the tale of Orpheus just a convenient plot or does its lesson of loss followed by even more permanent loss have greater significance in relation to the idea of a persistent collective "race memory"? Is deeper meaning embedded in this book or is complexity simulated through literary skill?

ISBN 1-85798-805-1 Published as SF Masterworks No. 6 Samuel Delany is not a hard SF writer. But he is a poet. Eventually, I gave him another chance - a few years ago I read his early "The Einstein Intersection", which struck me as weird, but interesting. I may have to come back to it sometime. And then we have "Babel-17": A lot of the books in the SF Masterworks series are fairly decent, so I've bought most of those I didn't already have, including of course this one. As for the McGuffin of the title: Well, the idea that language shapes the way one views the world is pretty old hat now, but seemed a fresh insight to me when I read it as a teenager - probably the first time I was exposed to it - and I imagine may have been cutting-edge in 1967. Now, I'm not clued-up on linguistic theory at all, but it seems to me that the interpretation of the idea as presented here is over-literal - language becomes a straight-jacket for the mind. I suspect not. But it makes a pretty good plot driver for a space-opera. But the writing, oh the writing..... Is pretty cool. This is early Delany, before he got self-indulgent, and I quite enjoyed it on that level. I don't really read books for the quality of writing, though I pay much more attention to it than I did when I was a kid, or even a decade ago, and I do now find some books I used to like virtually unreadable. And others have therefore improved for me. This is one of them, though I might feel different if it were twice as long.
