Extractions: REVIEW Rating: 4 (Very good) T Obviously, the plot of this book is not going to win any awards for grim plausibility - but who cares, Vic and buddies (including nice-guy Charlie and a lady friend referred to as the Queen of Softness) are a hoot! The author displays a natty line in American humor and a surprisingly delicate (for a caper writer) feel for language - in a literary sense, Dobyns is obviously a descendent of Mark Twain and O. Henry. It was particularly nice to read a horsey mystery that didn't regard the equine element with undue idolatry - although he likes horses and racing just fine, Vic is able and willing to poke fun at the more obnoxious elements of horse-ownership (like people who insist on telling you the name of their nag's every progenitor back to the Godolphin Arabian). Although sheer charm is notoriously the most insubstantial of the virtues, this book proves that it can be an irresistable force when combined with superior writing and a quirky, ironic point of view. Dobyns uses such modern day images as fax machines and email to put his point across. In particular, the separating out of "Heart" as though he were a separate person, with a separate consciousness from the more business-like brain seems like a brilliant literary trick. Extractions: Author and Poet Stephen Dobyns to Read at Smith College The Poetry Center at Smith College presents poet Stephen Dobyns at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in Stoddard Auditorium. Dobyns has published 21 works of fiction; a book of essays on poetry, "Best Words, Best Order" (St. Martin's Press, 1996); and ten books of poems, most recently "Pallbearers Envying the One Who Rides." His most recent novels are "Boy in the Water" and "Church of Dead Girls." A collection of his short stories, "Eating Naked," is forthcoming from Holt this year. Dobyns' poems have won many awards and prizes, including the Lamont Poetry Selection, the Poetry Society of America's Melville Cane Award and Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. His novels have been translated into some 15 languages, and two of them have been made into films ("Cold Dog Soup" and "Two Deaths of Señora Puccini"). Whether working in prose or poetry, he is a storyteller of great playfulness, caustic wit and heartfelt tenderness provocative and deeply curious. In "Pallbearers Envying the One Who Rides," we see the world through the melancholic eyes of Heart blood-pumping organ, lover, poet and skeptical philosopher of the everyday. Heart reflects on the vagaries of love, the cruelties of time and on "how some folks get pearls, others pebbles." Dividing two sections of Heart poems is the long "Oh, Immobility, Death's Vast Associate," which is a jazzy disquisition on human isolation and inaction in the midst of a planet full of people brooding over problems of gravity, age and memory. Full of Dobyns' characteristic black humor and maniacal imagination, the poem also admits moments of irresistible affirmation:

Extractions: When I have been reading, I got the impression that the climate and the nature looks a lot like Swedish nature and climate. The story starts on the autumn and ends at Christmas. The main character starts as a new headmaster in the autumn period. Dobyns describes the nature just like a Swedish autumn, yellow leafs, a lot of raining and in December in starts snowing. Now it does not start to snow in Sweden until January but we all like to think and hopes that the snow will come before Christmas, and we hopes every year and we will be disappointed every year, (almost) without exceptions. But Dobyns writes about the perfect Christmas, if we talk about the weather. Many other things are not that cozy this winter. Dobyns describes a school in distress. The trustees, the ones that have put up with the money for the school, wish to see some results or else they threaten to close it down. This is where the leading character comes in, Jim Hawthorne, and he is supposed to get the school back on it legs. But this is not popular among some people. So Dobyns start do describe this old school with a long past. The buildings as well as the teachers are aged. The buildings are falling apart and a lot of members in the faculty are have severe personal and mental problems. So the reader is getting into a pretty spooky and uncomfortable mood, which I think is the meaning since it is supposed to be a thriller.

Books Stephen Dobyns is a hugely prolific author (19 novels, nine volumes of poetry, a book of essays) who now offers this collection of short stories, which are charged with wit and could never be called pedestrian. A 700-pound pig being used in a film about a bank robbery falls out of the sky and lands on the head of a poet, killing him, of course, in the books opening story, A Happy Vacancy. The story recounts what happens to the poets widow, a serious scholar. No matter where she turns, she cant get away from peoples fascination over her husbands bizarrely comic death. The oddity of the death wipes out the accomplishments of her husbands life, and she finds herself surrounded by suppressed laughter whenever he comes up in conversation. Dobyns, almost always thematically driven in his work, has a great time watching the pig story overshadow this womans attempts to remain serious. Youll watch her resist her husbands trivialization, sensing all along that in the end, absurdity will triumph. (It usually does in a Dobyns story.)
