Extractions: News By Colby Stong Marjory Stoneman Douglas, an environmentalist who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, was an honored guest at a ceremony last month to dedicate a bronze sculpture by Philadelphia artist Eric Berg at the entrance to the Everglades National Park Royal Palm Visitor's Center in Florida. The life-size statue, which depicts a Florida panther, also honors landscape architect Ernest F. Coe (1886-1951), who conceived the idea of an Everglades national park in 1928. It is estimated that fewer than 50 of the once-plentiful panthers now remain in the state. Douglas has devoted more than 60 years to conservationist causes such as protecting the panther and preserving the Everglades. In 1970, she founded the Friends of the Everglades, a grass-roots organization that she still serves as president. Friends of the Everglades, a group of research scientists, engineers, and concerned citizens, was founded with the goal of fostering coexistence between human and natural environmental systems. The group has helped to block construction of an airport in the marshland, force the closing of two drainage canals, and strengthen restrictions on real estate developers. Douglas got her first look at the Everglades around 1919. Born in 1890 in Minneapolis, she was raised in Massachusetts and graduated from Wellesley College in 1912. Three years later, she moved to Miami and began to work for a newspaper (the News-Record) edited by her father, Frank Stoneman.

In the 1920s, Douglas wrote editorials urging Everglades protections, and in the 1930s and 1940s, she lobbied on the state and federal level for designation of the area as a national park. But it was the publication of her now-famous book, The Everglades: River of Grass , in 1947 that transformed the national consciousness. Later that year, she watched as an honored guest while President Truman dedicated Everglades National Park. Douglas founded the nonprofit group Friends of the Everglades in 1969, and spent many years traveling throughout the state, rallying support for the protection of the south Florida wetland and speaking out against people and industries that threatened it. Well beyond her 100th birthday, Douglas continued her grassroots effort to inform, outrage, and inspire others to action, becoming a beloved symbol of the Everglades she dedicated her life to protecting. In her declining years, she continued to raise awareness of the damage that misguided "replumbing" efforts and unwise development had wrought on the Everglades and challenged the nation to fix these mistakes and return the ecosystem to health. Her challenge has been taken up by the National Wildlife Federation and other groups working in support of an historic effort to protect and restore this unique American treasure.

Extractions: Marjory Stoneman Douglas has campaigned for the preservation and conservation of the Florida Everglades. Her book The Everglades River of Grass , published in 1947, is a landmark volume. Douglas founded the Friends of the Library and has close ties with the Friends of the Everglades, an organization working to promote public awareness and to gain state support toward the preservation of the Everglades. Florida named its Department of Natural Resources Building after Mrs. Douglas. Over the years Douglas has donated a number of materials to the Library including her personal papers. Most of the 19 maps in this collection are of Florida and cover various subjects. Among them are: "The Everglades Conservation Areas," by the South Florida Water Management District, 1977; "Vegetation map of Southern Florida," by John H. Davis Jr., 1943; "Map of Florida," by J. Extractions: Description This collection of interviews, conducted by the Office of Student Affairs in 1986, was used to produce Sixty Years of Achievement , a documentary film celebrating the University of Miami's 60th Anniversary. The tapes contain over sixty hours of footage that do not appear in the documentary, and cover topics as disparate as the founding of the university, campus life during the 1920s, WWII, and student activism during the turbulent 1960s and early 70s. At least it was for longtime Golden Gate resident Franklin Adams when the pioneer of Everglades preservation asked him to be the first chairman of the Collier County chapter of her Friends of the Everglades in 1971. By that time, Adams and Douglas had known each other for more than a decade, having started an association that would last until her death Thursday at her Coconut Grove home. She was 108. Southwest Florida environment advocates added their accolades Thursday for the woman whose legacy they say stretches beyond the wilderness she championed. Adams remembered her more simply. "I was just a friend of Marjory's, and we're going to miss her," he said. Adams, a former chairman of the Florida Wildlife Federation, met Douglas when he was enrolled in a course on Florida natural history she was teaching at Miami Dade Junior College in 1958. They discovered their families had mutual friends, he said. He learned more from her than natural history, though.

After leaving the paper in 1923, she devoted herself to her literary career, writing extensively about south Florida conservation. Since this title emerged, the area has been popularly known as the "River of Grass" although many new residents do not even know where the name originated. Also, in 1947, Mrs. Douglas helped lead the campaign to have the central core of the Everglades preserved as Everglades National Park. In 1969, Mrs. Douglas spearheaded The Friends of the Everglades, a conservation organization of 5,000 members, a testament to the importance of the Everglades. Membership still costs only one dollar a year. The biggest honor the physically small woman received during her lifetime was this: in December 1997, a 1.3 million-acre wilderness area in the Everglades was dedicated in her name on the Park's fiftieth anniversary.
