He graduated from McGill University in Literature and Religious Studies and from the Humber College School for Writers. His first book, The Adventures of Me and You was published by Eraserhead Press. He has also made a CD of solo guitar music, titled Element Fingerspelling , published by Penumbra Press in 2000, is the story in verse of a man who becomes romantically involved with a hearing-impaired woman, and how his notions of language and of sensuality are reconfigured. He has also lived in Victoria, Vancouver, New York City, and London, Ontario. He currently lives and writes in Ottawa, where he coordinates publishing for the National Museum of Science and Technology and the National Aviation Museum. He is co-editor of Arc: Canada's National Poetry Magazine with Rita Donovan. His new collection is an eyewitness travelogue through body and landscape. Each poem builds upon another until it seems that they create of themselves the collection's final powerful homoerotic elegy for Canada's time and place. "A tour de force . . . this collection will be recognized as a major contribution not only to Canadian poetry but to our Trudeau-inflected discourse on identity." (Vancouver Sun)

Extractions: By Kim Echlin When elephants speak to one another, their 52 utterances centre around three basic things: survival, nurturing of their young, and empathy for those that make up an elephant community. Kim Echlin, author of the recently published and much acclaimed novel Elephant Winter, dares to dream of a human community speaking in the same spiritual language. "Imagine being able to create a language that expresses anything you want," said Echlin, recently touring Western Canada to promote her first novel. "The language of elephant I created is about not feeling right unless the group feels right. It's about immense caring for others and the survival of a community." Echlin believes humans would do well to take a lesson from her beloved elephants, the animals she first observed in Africa and with which she quickly become enthralled. "I came back from Africa seven years ago and I knew I wanted to be around elephants," explained the petite Burlington native. But where does one find elephants in southern Ontario? In the imagination, of course, and when you're a writer with Echlin's grasp of language and poetic sensibility, a very good novel, including a lexicon of elephant language, is born.

In addition to Dermott Bolger, who conceived the idea for the novel and is its editor, Irish writers Roddy Doyle, Anne Enright, Hugo Hamilton, Jennifer Johnston, Joseph O'Connor, and Colin Toibin contributed the unsigned stories.
