    Extractions: Gascoigne, George c.1539-77. Gascoigne was born at Cardington in Bedfordshire and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. After Cambridge he entered Gray's Inn and became Member of Parliament for Bedford for two years in 1557. He married Elizabeth Breton, a widow and the mother of the poet Nicholas Breton, in 1561. He spent some time at court and knew Edmund Spenser , then served with the English forces in the Netherlands for two years (1572-74). Gascoigne led a dissipated life and never completed his training for the Bar; he spent some of that period in a debtors' prison. His early death occurred at Stamford, where he is buried. Gascoigne did not achieve a major place in English literature but he contributed much to the climate in which succeeding greater figures flourished. In 1573, in A Hundredth Sundrie Flowers Bounde up in One Small Poesie, he introduced the sonnet sequence and he uses prose narrative in The Adventures of Master F. J. The Posies of George Gascoigne Esquire (1575) contains much that appeared in the first book; it also contains the first critical essay on poetry in English, Certayne Notes of Instruction; Dan Bartholomew of Bathe
