She received a BA degree from Barnard in 1928 and continued graduate studies at Columbia University under the direction of Frank Boas. It was he who encouraged her to return to Eatonville to collect Black folklore which she did after receiving money from a New York socialite. While living and studying in New York Zora became involved with the Harlem Renassaince [The Black literary and cultural movement of the 1920's - during this period Harlem was the Mecca for all creative Blacks from the Caribbean and the United Ststae] She met many famous Black writers and literary figures including Langston Hughes who she collaborated with along with a few other poets to publish a one issue literary magazine of Black Culture called Fire !

Jan. 28, 1960, Fort Pierce, Fla.), American folklorist and writer associated with the Harlem Renaissance who celebrated black culture of the rural South. At age 16, Hurston joined a traveling theatrical company, ending up in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance. She studied anthropology with Franz Boas at Columbia University, taking a scientific approach to ethnicity. As an ethnologist, Hurston traveled to Haiti to study voodoo. She ultimately rejected the conventional viewpoint of the scholar in favour of personal involvement with her heritage. In 1931 she collaborated with Langston Hughes on a play, Mule Bone: A Comedy of Negro Life in Three Acts. Her second novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), was both widely acclaimed and highly controversial. It was criticized by blacks because, although Hurston refused to endorse the myth of black inferiority, neither did she portray blacks as victims of this myth. The tone of Hurston's work is celebratory, rooted in a rural black South reminiscent of her hometown, Eatonville. Her characters act freely within their rich heritage and narrow social position. At age 16, Hurston joined a traveling theatrical company, ending up in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance. Authors Zora Neale Hurston (1903-1960) Index Born in the small town of Eatonville, Florida, Zora Neale Hurston is known as one of the lights of the Harlem Renaissance. She first came to New York City at the age of 16 having arrived as part of a traveling theatrical troupe. A strikingly gifted storyteller who captivated her listeners, she attended Barnard College, where she studied with anthropologist Franz Boaz and came to grasp ethnicity from a scientific perspective. Boaz urged her to collect folklore from her native Florida environment, which she did. The distinguished folklorist Alan Lomax called her Mules and Men (1935) "the most engaging, genuine, and skillfully written book in the field of folklore." Hurston also spent time in Haiti, studying voodoo and collecting Caribbean folklore that was anthologized in Tell My Horse (1938). The Harlem Renaissance: The Development of a New African-American Consciousness Angela Wiley In New York in 1905, after a successful real estate market had declined, landlords and developers attempted to entice African-American realtors and tenants. After and during World War I, thousands of blacks migrated from the South and other areas to look for jobs and, by 1923, the number of blacks in New York was estimated to be 183,428, nearly three times that reported in 1910. Two thirds of these people settled in Harlem which, at that time, was distinctively black (Lewis, "Harlem's First Shining" 57). In 1917, an intellectual movement, known as the Harlem Renaissance, began in Harlem and lasted until 1935. David Levering Lewis, in his introduction to The Portable Harlem Renaissance Reader , writes that:
