Extractions: J.V. Jones Reading List J. V. Jones was born in Liverpool in 1963. When she was twenty she began working for a record label and was part of the Liverpool music scene of the early eighties. She later moved to San Diego, California, where she ran an export business for several years and where she is now the marketing director for an interactive software company. Her interests include music, history, cooking and computer games. You can visit her own personally maintained website at www.jvj.com As an unseasoned writer, arriving on the fantasy scene with a trilogy was a good achievement for Jones. Approached from a Light Fantasy standpoint Jones' first few plots are gratifying and her style charismatic, and the later, darker novels are certainly worth checking out. Here's the rundown. The Book of Words trilogy: The Baker's Boy A Man Betrayed Master and Fool This is the series Jones really cut her teeth on, and although it is a traditional coming of age story with a few other fantasy cliches thrown in the series manages to be both humourous and pleasingly dark at points. "At Castle Harvell, two fates collide. Melliandra refuses to marry the sinister Kylock while an apprentice named Jack is terrified by his sudden ability to work miracles. Together they flee the castle, followed by a sorcerer, while elsewhere a knight embarks on a voyage of his own."

J.V. Jones Page jv jones Page. Last updated December 12th, 1998 jv jones (Julie, to her friends)is one such writer who obviously possesses the quality of all great writers. http://www.comnet.ca/~jkahane/sf/authors/jvjones.html
Extractions: Last updated December 12th, 1998 Locus magazine, and saw a review of her first book that was due out in July of 1995, The Baker's Boy . The book sounded very interesting and entertaining, even if it was to be the first book of the Book of Words trilogy, and I was able to pick the book up when it first came out in trade paperback. The Baker's Boy was a very pleasant surprise, and not just to me. While I found that the reviews of the book were full of praise, the reviewers missed an awful lot of the subtle interactions between the characters in that first book. I can't say that Jack and Melli were all that loveable during the early part of the book, but as the novel worked its way along, they grew in their personalities and became very close to my heart. The sequel to that first book, A Man Betrayed , was just as good, if not better, than the first book, and Julie has continued with her fine writing in the third book. Julie's web site has a small biography section, that informs us that J.V. Jones was born in Liverpool, England, in 1963. She has been writing for four years, and is just starting work on her fifth novel, which is currently untitled. She currently resides in San Diego, California. The following is a listing of Julie V. Jones's fiction to this point:

Fantasy Finder - J.V. Jones: The Baker's Boy jv jones The Baker's Boy (Volume 1 of The Book of Words) Warner Aspect1995. About 18 years Fool (volume 3). jv jones' personal home page. http://www.hoh.se/fantasyfinder/jvjones1.html
Extractions: Warner Aspect About 18 years ago, a meteor falling into the atmosphere split in two: one white and one red like blood. Now the orphan Jack is baker's boy at Castle Harvell, but when he discovers his magical abilities, he has to run away. Melli, the beatiful daughter of the rich and unscrupulous Lord Maybor, is unofficially promised to the evil prince Kylock - and decides that her best solution is to run away. They meet each other in the forest, hunted by the evil sorcerer Baralis, who wants to create an empire under prince Kylock and ruled by himself. This is a book made from the basic high fantasy recipe. We've got the prophecy, the orphan hero - who works in the castle kitchen (R. Feist, T. Williams) - , we've got good and evil sorcerers and so on. If you want an unpredictable story, this isn't the one for you. But most fantasy readers seems to like new versions of the good old story (I do), and this is a well-told and entertaining piece. Lots of palace intrigues, and international political conflicts, lots of sex and romancing (but no explicit sex scenes), and a great deal of food. In fact, I don't think I've ever read a fantasy book with such detailed (and lustful) descriptions of various dishes. The book is filled with interesting characters, such as the cruel and food-loving archbishop Tavalisk and Melli's enormously rich, ambitious and libidinous father, Lord Maybor. There are also a couple of more openly comical characters, like the soldiers Grift and Bodger, and loads of women willing to sleep with any man (as long as he can give them money or power, or both). A friend of mine thinks this book has got a somewhat patriarchal world view. In his experience women are not at all like that, but maybe he's just tried the wrong methods when picking up women... I guess the female author of the book ought to know...
Fantasy Finder - J.V. Jones: A Man Betrayed jv jones A Man Betrayed (Volume 2 of The Book of Words) Warner Aspect 1996.This is the second part of the Book of Wordstrilogy. jv jones' home page. http://www.hoh.se/fantasyfinder/jvjones2.html
Extractions: Warner Aspect This is the second part of the Book of Words-trilogy. If you haven't read " The Baker's Boy ", don't read any further. While Maybor and Baralis are on their way to Bren to arrange the marriage between prince Kylock and Catherine, daughter of the duke of Bren, Kylock murders his father. Thereby the political pros and cons of the marriage changes. Jack, Melli, Kylock, Maybor, Baralis, Tawl, Nabber, Tavalisk and, of course, Grift and Bodger are all involved in the intriguing story, where the scenery has changed from Harvell to Bren. I liked "The Baker's Boy", but in "A Man Betrayed" the story is getting even better. In my review of the first book, I said the story was a bit predictable. Well, in this book Jack falls in love - and not with Melli! Melli is getting married! And Tavalisk is on a diet... But the women are as promiscuous as ever. Not even chastity belts can stop that. But the best thing about this book are all the political intrigues, where everyone in some ways are allied with the friends of his enemies, sort of. Intricate, and very complicated. I have no idea how all this is going to be solved in the third book. Only that the world's greatest magician, known as Jack, the baker's boy, will have an important role in the stopping of Kylock's evil empire. Karl Henriksson Order your copy from Amazon.com now:
