After the death of Malcolm X he became a Black Nationalist, moving first to Harlem and then back home to Newark. In the mid-1970s, abandoning Cultural Nationalist, he became a Third World Marxist-Leninist. In 1999, after teaching for twenty years in the Department of Africana Studies at SUNY-Stony Brook, he retired. However, in retirement he is as active and productive as an artist and intellectual as he has ever been in his career. Currently he lives with his wife, the poet Amina Baraka, in Newark. Extractions: and the Black Arts Movement The Black Arts movement emerged in 1965, following the assassination of Malcolm X and the founding of the Black Arts Repertory Theatre/School in Harlem by LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka). In a 1968 essay, "The Black Arts Movement," Larry Neal designated Black Arts as the "aesthetic and spiritual sister of the Black Power concept." (The Drama Review, Summer 1968: p. 29-39). The Black Arts movement led an explosion of urban African-American popular culture. It produced such writers as Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni and Sonia Sanchez, and affected scores of others, including Toni Morrison and Alice Walker. Extractions: I know that you said that this was speaking only for yourself, but according to what you said you have left the question of legitimizing war very open and vague. It would seem that , according to what you have written, any rationalization you can make with yourself will allow you to justify war. This is a very dangerous thing because if everything you imply with your statement is correct, then you are setting up the perfect rationalization for psychopaths and derranged individuals to wage war against society just because they can somehow justify it to themselves. He should have gone about it in a different way. I believe we should only use war when the saftey and independence of our people is being threatned. As in the World Wars, and with Hitler. The only thing I do not approve of is the way he went about making his point. All the points made above are valid. But I do not agree with all of them. I do believe Walker's credibility would have gone up if he did not come of as a drunk. Yes he could of gone about it in different way but the whole idea of the play was to show a confrontation of ideas between the white liberal and the black militant. The play goes way beyond the characters in the play. I think you focus too much on the actions of the characters rather than the issues they address. Even focusing on the characters, you would realize your comparison of Walker to Hitler wrong. Walker shows remorse in the play of his actions. He does not advocate war, at the time he saw it the only means to achieve an utopian society for blacks. The independance of blacks are being threatened. Oppression does put tremendous restraints on a person's freedom.
