Extractions: SK: The Blues Project was different from most of its contemporaries because the emphasis was placed on live improvisation. Unlike other white blues bands of the period, we didn't want to play the blues exactly like the great black blues artists. In that sense we were the urban counterpoint to what many bands in San Francisco were also doing - stretching out, playing with sounds, form, etc. - but our context was mainly the blues. And our forum was in live performance rather than the studio. Our attempts at "Top 40" were never successful. The gigs were what mattered and we never knew what was going to happen on stage on any given night.

Extractions: STEVE KATZ BIOGRAPHY Steve Katz interview Steve's professional career started in the late fifties on a local Schenectady, New York television program called Teenage Barn. Accompanied by piano, Steve would sing such hits of the day as "Tammy" and "April Love". Things could only go downhill from there. Influenced by the folk music groups of the early sixties, Steve studied guitar as a teenager with Dave Van Ronk and Reverend Gary Davis. It was at this time that he met and befriended guitarist Stefan Grossman. Steve & Stefan would sometimes act as road managers for Reverend Davis and, in so doing, met many of the great "rediscovered" blues men of an earlier era, like Son House, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt. There were many other young musicians and potential college dropouts around Greenwich Village during this time who were as obsessed with American roots music as Steve, whether it be bluegrass or blues. Many would look for a common ground in which to play music together and some, including Steve, Stefan, Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian and David Grisman found the common denominator in "jug band" music - the music of Cannon's Jug Stompers and The Memphis Jug Band. They and some other friends formed the Even Dozen Jug Band and were courted by Elektra Records for whom they recorded an album in 1964. Dwarfed by some of the finest young guitarists of the time, Steve opted to play washboard in the band. He would later use the same tactic of avoiding tough chords by mastering the harmonica.

At the same time, my wife, a ceramic artist, came up with some really good commercial ideas( designer spoonrests, for instance )and I would help her do craft shows on the weekends. This led to a catalog and big wholesale shows. The business grew to the point where I had to devote full time to it. But I still find time to play a very good club around where I live once every 8 months or so. I play an acoustic set - my songs, folk-blues, etc. Its a lot of fun because now I only do it for the love of it. When did you start to write songs? How did your musical style develop? What were your influences then and later on? How do you compose (w. guitar or piano,etc) I started to write when I was about seventeen. Id written some poetry around then and was just starting to play guitar, experimenting with tunings and all, so it seemed natural. The influences on my playing were basically folk, country blues, and old-timey music, but previously I had sung Sinatra songs at weddings and banquets when I was a kid. My teacher, Dave Van Ronk was probably my biggest influence along with Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt, the list would need a dozen more megabytes. I always composed on guitar. Have you composed for others?
