In addition to appearances with the Boston Symphony and the American Chamber Orchestra in Washington DC, he has performed solo recitals in Austria, Canada, New York City at Carnegie Recital Hall, at the Spoleto Festival, the Wymnoor Recital Hall in Florida, the San Francisco Conservatory, and at many colleges and universities throughout the United States. Combining active performing and teaching careers as Associate Professor of Voice at Penn State University, Mr. Kennedy has been a winner of the Franz Schubert Prize for Singers awarded in Austria and an international finalist in the Opera Company of Philadelphia/Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition. Mr. Kennedy earned degrees at the Indiana University School of Music and was the first recipient of the Artist Diploma at the Boston University School for the Arts where he was a student of Phyllis Curtin. Richard Kennedy toured for two years as soloist with the Mantovani Orchestra, performing in concerts from coast to coast in the United States as well as in Canada, Japan and Taiwan. Recent performances include appearances with the Penns Woods Festival Orchestra, the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Centre Chamber Orchestera, the Penn State University Resident Theatre Company, and Pennsylvania Centre Stage. Richard Kennedy last appeared with the Nittany Valley Symphony during the 1995-96 season in a program that included arias from Mozarts

I am particularly interested in the calcium signals occurring in the basolateral pole of the cell, close to synaptic sites. I use simultaneous patch-clamp and confocal microscopy to study these calcium signals. My experiments have demonstrated that, upon stimulation, mammalian hair cells do not produce discrete hotspots of intracellular calcium, as reported in lower vertebrates. Instead the Ca i increases are broadly distributed all around the basal pole of the cell, in a region that is close to the afferent synapses. Extractions: photo: Richard O'Kennedy Professor Richard O'Kennedy has received the Royal Irish Academy Biochemistry Award for 2001 in recognition of his contribution to biochemical research in the last decade. In honour of the occasion, a specially designed silver medallion was presented to Richard at a ceremony in the Royal Irish Academy on Tuesday 26 February 2002. Schering Plough sponsored the award. The focus of his research is antibody production and applications, biosensors, immunoanalysis and drug analysis/metabolism with special reference to coumarin-based molecules. Since Richard's appointment as a lecturer in biochemistry at DCU in 1985, he has had an extremely prolific career. He has authored over one hundred peer-reviewed papers, plus book chapters, books and reviews. A number of ideas arising from his research have also been commercialised.

Extractions: ECA Magazine Staff Kennedy Center, Washington, DC After many years of laughs and dirty comedy, came a night that sure will be remembered for years to come. Yesterday, comedians from all generations gathered at the Kennedy Center to salute one of the finest comedians ever to make us laugh, Richard Pryor. Pryor, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis smiled and waived his hands to the crowd that was on hand to show appreciation a man who received the first annual Mark Twain Prize for American humor. Among the attendees were Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Rock, Damon Wayans, Richard Belzer, and Robin Williams who referred to Pryor as the Evel Knievel of Comedy. He was the pioneer of many things in comedy some of which are too dirty to mention in print. Most of what Pryor did over the years was an art, it created another dimension of comedy. Some of his films were so funny that the average viewer had to watch then two or three times before they could get through the entire movie without laughing and loosing concentration. If any fan that was in attendance did laugh or shed a tear this past evening, it probably would not have been the traditional show we are accustomed to with Pryor. It was unfortunate that most of the humor this evening probably was not understood by Pryor due to his current condition. He smiled a few times during the evening, but for most of the show he sat in his wheelchair motionless and slumped to one side with a jaunt look on his face.
