Lawrence's doctrines of sexual freedom arose obscenity trials, which are still part of the relationship between literature and society. He saw sex and intuition as a key to undistorted perception of reality and a way unburden individual's frustrations and maladjustment to industrial culture. In 1912 he wrote: "What the blood feels, and believes, and says, is always true." The author's frankness in describing sexual relations between men and women upset a great many people. Lawrence's life after World War I was marked with continuous and restless wandering. "The novel is the book of life. In this sense, the Bible is a great confused novel. You may say, it is about God. But it is really about man alive. Adam, Eve, Sarai, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Samuel, David, Bath-sheba, Ruth, Esther, Solomon, Job, Isaiah, Jesus, mark, Judas, Paul, Peter: what is it but man alive, from start to finish? Extractions: Eastwood and D H Lawrence Follow the Blue Line Trail The blue line trail is a tourist trail in Eastwood, taking the form of a line painted on the roadside which follows a route passing the various houses in which Lawrence lived and other sites associated with him and his writings. The idea is based on the red line tourist trail in Boston, USA. The route covers a distance of 2.75 miles and takes between one and two hours to walk. I have created a virtual blue line trail here which covers most of the sites and I hope to add more soon. Extractions: In 1915 The Rainbow had been seized by the police and declared to be obscene. His 1916 novel Women In Love could not find a publisher in America or Britain (and did not until 1920 and 1921 respectively when, in 1921, W Charles Pilley reviewed it under the headline "A Book the Police Should Burn"). So, in 1928 he arranged for a private publication of his novel Lady Chatterley's Lover in Italy. It was not to be commercially published in the USA or Britain for 30 years.

Lawrence wrote everything from novels and novellas to short stories, poetry, literary criticism, philosophical and travel essays, plays, and a large collection of marvelous letters. As a writer-in-training, myself, I figure why not study a Master. At present my interest lies mainly in the shorter works, and my comments are from a writer's perspective. I first read Lawrence in College and was intrigued by him. Ten years later his stories were still vivid in my mind along with the tales of Edgar Allen Poe, Hawthorne, and H.G. Wells. But there is something in Lawrence's style that I find addictive. And so I've spent ten years intensively studying Lawrence, and narrative technique in general, becoming what's known as an "independent scholar." Which is, as far as I can determine, someone who studies for no good reason other than a deep and sincere love of their topic. My fascination for Lawrence shifted into high gear in the spring of 1997 after getting connected to the Internet and discovering the Rananim Society of which I'm proud to be a member. Frost's poetry is characterized by simple vocabulary, keen observation of rural New England life, and down-home folkish wisdom. A coincidental tie-in: Robert Frost graduated valedictorian of the class of 1892 from LAWRENCE High School in LAWRENCE, Massachusetts. Like D.H., he had a short stint as grammar school teacher at a "rough" boys school and described himself as someone who likes to teach anywhere but the classroom. He had wanted to study under the philosopher William James at Harvard (who was an early influence on Lawrence).
