He attended Yale University where he chaired the Yale Literary Monthly . After service in World War I , he graduated from Harvard Law School. MacLeish practiced law for three years before resigning and moving his family to Paris. Dr. Locklair's numerous awards have included consecutive ASCAP Awards since 1981, a Kennedy Center Friedham Award, an Alienor Award, the new Music Award from the Omaha Symphony Society, a North Carolina Composer Fellowship Award and the top Barlow International Competition Award for 1989. In 1992, he became the first American composer to be invited to and have music performed at the thirty-five-year-old Czech Festival of Choral Arts in Jihlava, Czech Republic.
