Extractions: Pub. Date: April 2002 Reviewed by Thumper I found a pearl when I happened upon the remarkable author Clarence Major. I discovered Clarence Major by way of an anthology, titled After Hours edited by Robert Fleming . Although, I had heard of Clarence Major, I had never read any of his works until I promised to review After Hours. In the anthology was Anita, an excerpt from Major's novel All Night Visitor. While reading Anita, I immediately flipped for Major and vowed to read all of his books. Fortunately, before the afterglow of my sudden admiration ebbed, I remembered that his latest book, Come By Here: My Mother's Life was in my "to read" pile. What a stroke of luck! Not only was I in the opportune position of following up on my brand new high regard of Clarence Major but I did it with an incredibly awesome book! Come By Here is a book that transcends labels. It could claim to be a biography, as well as a novel. Regardless of classification, Come By Here insists on being what it is a book of quiet beauty and simple elegance, whose heart is as warm as a hug from an old friend. Come By Here begins and ends with Mrs. Inez Hull relating her life story to her son, Clarence Major. Highlights include information on her childhood, her family, her marriage to Clarence Major, Sr., her life in Chicago, intra-racism due to her light skin color and capacity to pass for white, and being a single mother. Miss Inez' life is full of triumphs and tragedies, tears and laughter, and poverty and riches. She had the courage to face the unknowns of new days when the heartaches of yesterdays lays heavy on her soul.

Autery is director of programs and evaluation, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Programs and Resources, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. General Autery was born in Corrigan, Texas, in 1933, and graduated from Liberty (Texas) High School in 1952. He attended Baylor University, Waco, Texas, where he received bachelor of arts and bachelor of laws degrees. General Autery completed the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa., in 1975. He received his commission through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Baylor University. The general entered primary pilot training at Maiden Air Base, Mo., in December 1957 and completed basic training at Craig Air Force Base, Ala., in January 1959. Following graduation General Autery was assigned to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., as a B-52G co-pilot. In September 1961 he was assigned to the 42nd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Toul-Rosieres Air Base, France, where he flew RB-66s. He remained there through January 1965, when he was sent on temporary duty for his first combat tour of duty at Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. After RF-4C transition training, General Autery volunteered for and served a second combat tour of duty with the 11th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. Returning to the United States in January 1967, General Autery was assigned to Air Force headquarters as an operations staff officer in the Directorate of Operations and later as an executive officer for the deputy chief of staff for plans and operations. In July 1971 he became commander of the 17th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Zweibrucken Air Base, Germany, where he again flew RF-4C's. He subsequently served as 26th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing chief of maintenance. He moved to Ramstein Air Base, Germany, in October 1973, to serve as executive officer for the commander in chief, United States Air Forces in Europe.

This collection combines poetry, prose, and art by Major with critical essays by leading scholars that showcase Major's aesthetic movement across literary, cultural, and political boundaries and illuminate the complex relationship between the artist's writing and painting. Although Major's artistic vision is grounded in the historical experiences of black and Native American peoples, he boldly experiments with crossing boundaries of all types. The 26th Division was one of the most decorated divisions and one of the longest under fire during the war. Edwards himself received a Distinguished Service medal. Tinker lost his life during World War II while on a combat mission during the Japanese attack on Midway Island in the Pacific, June 7, 1942. He grew up near Pawhuska, in the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. During his youth he worked in the print shop of his father's newspaper, the Wah-Sha-She News , which he founded and published. Tinker attended an Osage Nation boarding school in Pawhuska, and later the famous Indian school in Lawrence, Kansas, the Haskell Institute. He graduated from the Wentworth Military Academy, in Lexington, Missouri in 1912. Commissioned as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army infantry in March 1912, Tinker first served in the Hawaiian Islands. During the 1920s he entered the Air Service and graduated from flight training. In 1927 he was named Commandant of the Air Corps Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas. The 1930s saw Tinker as commander of various pursuit and bombardment units. In May 1940 he was promoted to Brigadier General. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor , Tinker was appointed Commander of the Air Forces in Hawaii to reorganize the air defenses of the islands. In January 1942 he was advanced to Major General. In early June 1942 the Japanese began their assault of Midway Island, and on 7 June, General Tinker elected to lead a force of early model

Extractions: During World War I Tinker served in the southwestern United States and California, rising in rank to major. In 1919 Tinker began flying lessons and soon transferred to the Air Corps. Tinker's aviation career began when he was assigned to flight duty on July 1, 1922. For the next twenty years Tinker was stationed primarily at air installations in the southeastern United States. He continued climbing in rank, becoming a brigadier general on October 1, 1940. At that time Tinker was in charge of MacDill Field, Tampa, Florida. As German armies rolled across Europe, Tinker cautioned against Japanese aggression in the Pacific. The plans he devised to protect the Panama Canal and Caribbean region became important wartime strategy.
