Gary Calarco, Andrew Olsson and Jeff DiNicola started the ball rolling with hits and Stuart Lane and Danny Salvatore drove in runs as most of the damage was done early in the game. Brian Costanzo struck out three to highlight the pitching staff, while Vinnie DeStefano kept his streak of getting on base in every game alive with his last at bat in the game. Joey Salvatore earned the game ball for his heads up play to Josh Costanzo at first during the third inning.

    Extractions: "Cracker" Karanja Burke Don West 's poem "Look Here, America" is powerfully assertive and unorthodox, declaring the absence of racism in the hills of Appalachia. Furthermore, West shows his sadness that this racism still exists in other parts of the country. According to the poem, while people are wasting their time worrying about the color of a person's skin, the residents of Appalachia are embracing each other and shamelessly working together. West urges the citizens of America to investigate this problem, and to view Appalachia as an example of triumph. Interestingly enough, "Look Here, America" was published in 1946, some 15 years before sentiments of civil rights became widespread. In his poem, West refers to himself and White southerners as "crackers." The term is generally of a derogatory nature, and seems to be resident to the South. Despite its negative connotations, it is sometimes seen as a term of endearment, especially among White Georgians, although many Southern whites do not use nor do they approve of the term. "Cracker" has specific ethnic connotations, directed towards White Southerners, and more frequently, poor ones. Of its peculiar dual nature, Irving Allen writes, "'Cracker' is a positive or at least a humorous self-label for many Georgians. But in and beyond Georgia it was and remains a class epithet, and is more recently a black term for any white, Southerner or Northerner, who is thought to be a racist" (59). Robinson himself always honored those black ballplayers who faced the bitter constraints of segregation before him. One of them was William Clarence Matthews '05, who challenged the color line more than 40 years before Robinson. Crimson reported, "Harvard has quite a find in Matthews....He weighs only 144 pounds, but he more than makes up for that by his wonderful quickness, pertinacity, and sand." He scored the winning run in the Yale game that year before 9,000 fans, and for the next three years was Harvard's leading player. His senior-year performance included a .400 batting average and 22 stolen bases in 25 games. McClure's Magazine held him up nationally as "the best there is in a college athlete"who "to maintain his amateur standing has repeatedly refused offers of $40 a week and board to play semi-pro baseball in the summer." (All the while, he had been earning his way at Harvard, taking jobs during the school year, working summers in Pullman cars and hotels, and teaching in a Cambridge night school.) Boston Traveler speculated that he would cross the "line" and play for a major-league nine. Fred Tenney, player-manager of Boston's National League team, only a half-game from last place, was keen to add Matthews to his roster. The story attracted national attention. The

Back at school, helping out. For anyone who knows Royster, however, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Rarely does the J.F. Webb High School senior let any opportunity escape. "I guess everything just works itself out," Royster said. "I could be in the middle of my homework and an idea will just hit me. I have to stop and write it down." As student council president, drum major, National Honor Society member and most recently a play-by-play announcer for Webb’s basketball games, Royster has jumped full-force into high school life. The drive to succeed didn’t quite hit, however, until his sophomore year. "I had some teachers say they were surprised I’m doing all this," he said, breaking into a wide, friendly grin. "They thought I was the quiet one." Royster can still seem soft-spoken, but carries himself with a dignity and maturity beyond his years.
