    Extractions: Michael McClure, Chapbook Poet Michael McClure , a founding member of the Beat Generation, is noted for he popularity of his dynamic poetry readings. At the age of twenty-two he gave his first poetry reading at the Six Gallery, in the event that began the Beat Generation and the San Francisco poetry scene. Michael McClure is more active than ever, performing his poetry in venues as diverse as the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, N.Y.U., The Bottom Line, and the Iron Horse Coffee house. "The Los Angeles Times characterized McClure as "The role model for Jim Morrison." McClure's music sources range from Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk, to the rock with which his poetry performances frequently share a bill. McClure's own songs include Mercedes Benz, popularized by Janis Joplin. For years McClure has been working with his friend The Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek. They play clubs, colleges and festivals like the Jack Kerouac Festival, and TV appearances on the shows of David Sanborn and Dennis Miller. The Poetry Flash described one of the poet's readings: "McClure-dressed in black-stood and uttered his words with a sort of sultry precision. His gestures punctuated his words, enthralling, enlisting a dynamic tension between audience and performer that didn't let up till the words stopped."

It was considered obscene and became the focus of censorship and legal battles. 14 times in a row, members of the cast were arrested for performing The Beard . At one point, in a decision to embark on their own to perform The Beard "It was an outrageous night! The police were there, the D.A. was there, and the Sheriff was there. They all had recorders and I had people there with recorders. I had expert witnesses sitting in the front row. People like Mark Shorer, Alan Watts, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. But they didn't get us, they didn't dare bust us that night. They got the actor and the actress the next day. Then the ACLU defended us for the two cases they were arrested for. Then we were found ok. We opened it ourselves and ran it for a while. Then we took it to New York and it received a lot of awards. We took it to London and it got very high praise. (no wait, that was later) We took it to Los Angeles and every newspaper in Orange County went totally wild. The L.A. Times ran 2 editorials against us while we were rehearsing, and we had another long series of arrests. Which again we won. After The Beard had won all these trials, every college in America wanted to do it. It looked like it was going to replace

    Extractions: Michael McClure's latest collection divides into two long sequences: a collection of 50+ haiku and a selection of offshoots of earlier poems, graftings that have been transplanted into new poetic terrains. These poems dive rather than walk across the page, vertical plumbings as opposed to standard horizontal renderings. Apropos of this Beat poet, most lines are only a beat, a syllable. Although a little does go a long way in many of these poems, too much doesn't go far enough, finally. The poems in the second section depict a kind of "Reason / whose details are confusion." Written in the aftermath of personal trials ("after meltdown"), these poems, too, extend down the page. At their best, the images are plain and domestic: "Scarlet lipstick all over / the frail cobalt cup / fine / as the mind / of a moth." But then the jarring smashing of the poetic prettiness at the poem's conclusion: "A handful of excrement smeared / on a wall." McClure thinks of images as big as God's "HUGE FACE," but the best of these "SMALL" poems have "a soul / like an opal." McClure wisely quotes Whitehead's statement, which applies equally to the writing of (good) poems: "We think in generalities but we live / in detail." The best of these poems are replete with the details of daily living.

The legendary "Six Poets at Six Gallery" reading was held on October 7, 1955 in San Francisco at the Six Gallery, an art gallery converted from a garage. Kenneth Rexroth organized the evening to promote Alan Ginsburg, Michael McClure and other young poets. The Six Poets reading drew an audience of about 150 people. The are conflicting versions of what happened that night. Michael McClure's can be found in his book "Scratching The Beat Surface". Kerouac's version was published in "The Dharma Bums". What was it like to be at the Six Gallery that night? Imagine you walk in the door and there's Jack Kerouac taking the money. You hand him the dough and he runs out to buy some red wine.
