Extractions: Ogden Nash's first collection of humorous poetry, Hard Lines (1931), had seven printings in its first year, all sell-outs, and established Nash's idiosyncratic style. It was followed by many more collections, all successful. In 1943, he collaborated with SJ Perelman to write the text of the musical comedy One Touch of Venus , with music by Kurt Weill. This too was a great success.

Born in Rye, New York, Nash spent a year at Harvard, then tried a variety of jobs before achieving sufficient success as a poet to begin making a living at it in 1931. Famed for both his loosely constructed comic doggerel ("The Lord in His wisdom made the fly/And then forgot to tell us why"), and his wittier and more polished poetry, Ogden Nash published 20 volumes of verse, several children's books, and the lyrics for two musicals. Here are a few observations on modern life from the man who wrote "Progress may have been all right once, but it went on too long." Ogden Nash dismissed iceberg lettuce as "A pallid package of rigidity/A globe of frozen insipidity." He also had nothing good to say about the word additive , calling it "the pitchman's fadditive" and reasoning that "The additive, as a matter of factitive, / Logically leads to the subtractitive." That wasn't the end of Nash's interest in language. He noted "Those authors I can never love/Who write, 'It fit him like a glove.'/Though baseballs may be hit, not 'hitted'/The past of 'fit' is always 'fitted.' "
