Extractions: 8. The Goal Peter is a mythical character created by the author to tell the history of the English choral tradition from its monastic roots through the early years of the 20th century. Through a series of reincarnations this chorister shares a boy's view of the life of a chorister. While telling the history of church music Peter successfully gets even with a mean-spirited monk, is appointed boy bishop, is pressed into service for the Chapel Royal, Windsor, plays the part of Juliet in Shakespeare's drama, rescues the music of Tallis, Byrd, and Gibbons during Cromwell's time, sings at Foundling Hospital performances of "Messiah" with Handel conducting, is party to the Oxford Movement changes in parish churches, and sings for a coronation service at Westminster Abbey. I find the author's use of historical fiction to teach children the history of English church music wholly admirable. While the book is no substitute for more scholarly books on the subject it does provide the adult reader a good summary of the musical history of the church in England from a unique perspective, much like the book "Traveler" by Avi in which he tells the history of the American Civil War from the point of view of Robert E. Lee's horse. The author, Sir Sydney Nicholson, one time organist of Westminster Abbey, composer, and founder of the School of English Church Music, later to become the Royal School of Church Music, reveals in the writing of this chronicle the depth of his determination to encourage, educate, and promote the tradition of boy choristers serving in parish, collegiate, and cathedral choirs.
