During his long convalescence, he read extensively, becoming particularly interested in Existentialist philosophy and the problems of authenticity, perception, and meaning in everyday life. He built his work as a writer (of both fiction and nonfiction) upon these interests, and has often been characterized as a "philosophical novelist."
