Extractions: date Sappho was an ancient Greek poet who is remembered for her beautiful odes to love and desire. These poems often speak eloquently and poignantly of the suffering that lovers can experience. In this watercolor, Gustave Moreau reveals his ability to capture a moment of intense emotion. The artist has depicted Sappho languishing on an isolated cliff, her Classically inspired features frozen in an expression of utter despair. The tip of a stylized musical instrument can be glimpsed behind the poet, which reinforces her connection to poetry and music. Moreau was a master of depicting melancholy in his paintings, as this watercolor demonstrates. In addition, it is worth noting that the artist was haunted by the story of Sappho. He revisited the motif of the melancholy poet many times during his artistic career, in watercolor, pencil drawings, sketches, and oil paintings. Wie zu dieser Zeit üblich, wurden Mädchen und Frauen unterrichtet und ihre vielversprechenden Talente in Anmut, Grazie, Poesie, Philosophie und Musik gefördert. Edle und gebildete Frauen bemühten sich intensiv um ihre Schülerinnen, die sich gern den erfahreneren Frauen anschlossen. Diese Frauengesellschaften pflegten die Tradition und gaben von Generation zu Generation ihr Wissen weiter. So gründete auch Sappho auf Lesbos ihre Sängerinnen-Schule, die weithin Ruhm erlangte. Der Dichter Alkaios beschreibt Sappho als liebenswürdige, heitere, anmutige und würdevolle Frau, gibt ihr Attribute wie veilchenlockig, hehr und süßlächelnd. Nach der Sage, die nach ihren Gedichttexten entstand, soll sich Sappho aus unerwiderter Liebe zu Phaon vom Leukadischen Felsen gestürzt haben. Dennoch ist es ebenso möglich, wenn nicht wahrscheinlicher, daß es sich bei Sapphos Worten nur um dichterische Erfindungen handelte, die gerade das Sujet der unerwidert Liebenden und Leidenden zum erhöhten Thema werden ließ. So dient auch die Erzählung vom todessehnsüchtigen Felsenssprung als literarisches Mittel, sich von seinen Leiden zu befreien und somit den Wahn und die Berauschtheit der Liebe zu beschreiben und ist nicht als wirkliche historische Tatsache zu interpretieren.

Extractions: shake the pine torch.1 L ike a Greek woman, a Roman woman was usually under the guardianship, manus, of her paterfamilias, male guardian, her whole life. However, during the end of the Roman Republic and at the time of the elegiac poets, women tended to have more freedom: both in ostensibly factual texts and in imaginative writing a new kind of women appears precisely at the time of Cicero and Caesar: a woman in high position, who nevertheless claims for herself the indulgence in sexuality of a woman of pleasure.2 This 'new woman' both affected and was affected by a new attitude towards marriage, the beginnings of which are seen in Catullus' poems.3 This section will examine the traditional Roman marriage 4and the transition to a different kind of relationship at the time of the elegists. Roman marriages could either be traditional, with coniubium and manus, or unconventional, without coniubium and manus. 5 In order for a marriage and the children resulting from the union to be legitimate, both partners needed to have ius coniubium, the right to marry. This right was both inherent in Roman citizenship and bestowed upon certain people as a special privilege. Under Augustus' laws, if a couple had a sexual union, but did not have coniubium, the union was considered stuprum and the couple was subject to penalties. There were certain unions, however, that allowed people without coniubium to have a marital like union. 6

Extractions: Aphra Behn ( 33k JPG image ), alleged by Vita Sackville-West to be the first women in England to earn a living as a writer, is a bit of a mystery. Little is known about her backgroundwho her parents were and where she was bornbut the details of her life that are known paint the portrait of an intriguing woman. Aphra lived for a time in Surinam, an experienced that inspired her first novel, Oroonoko, or The Royal Slave (1688). She was married for a short time and widowed at age 25. She secured employment as a spy for King Charles II and was sent to Belgium in this capacity. The King refused to pay her return trip, however, and after borrowing the funds to return, she was thrown into debtor's prison. After leaving prison, Aphra worked hard to make sure she was always capable of supporting herself. She became a successful London playwright and then a novelist. She wrote poetry, feeling that this form allowed her to express her "masculine" side. Aphra's opinions were unconventional, and because she openly expressed her viewpoints in her lifestyle and through her writing, she was seen as scandalous. Her poetry remarks on romantic relationships with both men and women, discusses rape and impotence, puts forth a woman's right to sexual pleasure, and includes scenes of eroticism between men.

Extractions: Amy Lowell ( 27k JPG image ), American Imagist poet, was a woman of great accomplishment. She was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, to a prominent family of high-achievers. Her environment was literary and sophisticated, and when she left private school at 17 to care for her elderly parents, she embarked on a program of self-education. Her poetic career began in 1902 when she saw Eleonora Duse, a famous actress, perform on stage. Overcome with Eleonora's beauty and talent, she wrote her first poem addressed to the actress. They met only a couple times and never developed a relationship, but Eleonora inspired many poems from Amy and triggered her career. Ada Russell, another actress, became the love of Amy's life. She met Ada in 1909 and they remained together until Amy's death in 1925. Amy wrote many, many poems about Ada. In the beginning, as with her previous poems about women, she wrote in such a way that only those who knew the inspiration for a poem would recognize its lesbian content. But as time went on, she censored her work less and less. By the time she wrote Pictures of the Floating World , her poems about Ada were much more blatantly erotic. Extractions: Edna St. Vincent Millay, twentieth-century poet and playwright, was best known for her lyrical poetry. She wrote many poems in traditional sonnet form, on topics such as love, fidelity, erotic desire, and feminist issues. What isn't as widely publicized is that she also acknowledged herself as bisexual and had many affairs with women before her marriage. It's not clear if she continued sexual involvements with women after marriage (though it is quite possible), nor is it clear which of her poems are written about women rather than men. She grew up in a different sort of familypast the age of seven, her father wasn't present, as her mother (Cora) asked him to leave. Cora was a nurse who encouraged Millay (called Vincent by her close friends) and her sisters in musical and literary pursuits. Millay was brought up to be self-sufficient and was taught that ambition was good, an upbringing reflected in her accomplishments of later years. At her mother's encouragement, Millay entered her poem "Renascence" into a poetry contest and won fourth placed. When the poem was published, she gained literary recognition and earned a scholarship to Vassar. At Vassar, she continued to write poetry and became involved in theater. In 1922 one of her plays
