Extractions: Tor, 1997, ISBN 0-312-85171-5 Recently, I said mainstream readers probably couldn't read A Deepness in the Sky ; they'd have no way to get a handle on it. Dogland is a fantasy novel that, if they found it shelved in mainstream fiction and picked it up, they'd never suspect they'd read any of that weird genre stuff. The fantasy elements blend in seamles sly, and are sufficiently subtle that the book can be read without acknowledging their presence at alland a mainstream reader who did notice them would probably call it "magic realism". Nevertheless, some of the most critical events in the story are simply different events, depending on whether you read the fantasy elements as being there or not. But nothing in the text of book requires the reader to prefer one of these readings over the other. Extractions: This review originally appeared in Black Gate , Spring 2001, the first issue of an ambituous new fantasy magazine, edited by John O'Neill, with the assistance of Dave Truesdale among others. Chimera A review by Rich Horton Will Shetterly's new novel Chimera Max is reluctant to take the case: he doesn't work for critters. But he's in a bit of a bind, so he agrees to help. What follows is a nearly nonstop chase, as Max and Zoe encounter first the police, then a series of people who seem to be peripherally involved: Krista Blake, a police expert who takes a sudden shine to Max; Amos Tauber, an advocate for full rights for both "critters" and Artificial Intelligences; and Oberon Chain, the head of a high-tech company who is also an AI rights crusader. When some of these people begin to get murdered as well, the frame is in, and Max and Zoe are the designated suspects. At the same time, Max is realizing that his feelings for Zoe may be a lot deeper than is prudent for a human to have with respect to a critter. From there we encounter a number of different aspects of this future, such as the indentured service camps that have replaced jails; and the "critter" side of town, complete with riots and reverse prejudice against "skins" (ordinary humans); plus scenes of critters "werewolfing": suddenly going berserk and killing everybody in sight; as well as a very well put argument about the ethics of downloading human brains into computers, and vice versa, and plenty more. As I said, the plot is fast moving, and I was always interested, but at times things happen a bit conveniently for the heroes.

Robert Shetterly will be showing a selection of drypoints and oils from his Annunciation Series. Eric Weil is a Brooklyn-based sculptor. Robert Shetterly says of his work, "I make pictures to keep myself from being overwhelmed by the world. I consider my work to be a contemplation of what it means tobe alive - a celebration of the imagination, the ambiguities of human behavior, emotional complexity, spiritual longing, and necessary humor. My paintings often imply narrative, but I hope that the narrative is, in turn, overwhelmed by mystery." Shetterly is a Maine-based artist and has shown extensively in many New England galleries including the Leighton Gallery, Frick Gallery, New Hampshire Institute of Art, Hobe Sound Galleries, and Berkeley Center at Yale University. He has been included in the juried Maine Coast Artist's Annual Show for 5 consecutive years. He is currently collaborating with other Maine artists on a premiere Cuban artist exchange program. Eric Weil says of his work, "My sculpture functions as a means to address the inequities and tensions between people that result from social and political power structures. The sculptures consist of representative figures in constructed environments of allegorical structures and materials. These constructions are meant to crystallize these distances and barriers between people as well as the tensions and contradictions that exist within ourselves when faced with the glaring inequities of western life".

IIn the search for the spiritual anything seems fair game, turning traditional narrative upside down, mixing the sacred with the profane, denying the existence of God while one goes on looking. Anything is fair game as long as the search is honest, not merely an exercise in shock or titillation".
