Penelope Pitt verläßt Edmonton mit dem Kanadischen Express, um sich auf die Reise nach Europa zu begeben. Dies scheint allerdings vorerst ein großes Abenteuer zu werden, da sie noch nicht weiß, wie sie diese Reise finanzieren soll. Doch bereits im Zug trifft sie auf eine junge Frau, die sie sogleich als Sekretärin nach England verpflichtet. Penelope willigt ein und erreicht England auf diese Art schneller als sie zu hoffen gewagt hatte. Ihre neue Arbeitsstelle scheint ihr zunächst willkommen einsam und ruhig, befindet sich das Anwesen ihres Arbeitgebers auf einer abgelegenen Klippe, weitab jeglichen Kontaktes zur Aussenwelt. Doch schon bald passieren seltsame Dinge, wird sie doch auf dem Anwesen wie eine Gefangene gehalten. Sie darf weder alleine ins Dorf gehen, noch wird sie jemals mit eintreffendem Besuch alleine gelassen.

Weil er ständig über seine Verhältnisse lebte und stets Geld brauchte, begann er, Kriminalromane zu schreiben, die sehr bald erfolgreich waren und ihn schnell bekannt machten. 1932 ging er nach Hollywood und verfasste das erste Drehbuch für den Welterfolg "King Kong und die weiße Frau", unmittelbar danach erlag er einer Lungenentzündung. Bereits seit 1915 entstanden fast 170 Verfilmungen in England, Deutschland und den USA, die auf Romanen, Theaterstücken oder Kurzgeschichten Wallaces basieren, an deren Herstellung er mitunter selber beteiligt war, als Regisseur, Drehbuchautor und gelegentlich sogar als Darsteller.

    Extractions: THE WRITINGS OF EDGAR WALLACE If it is possible to find of interest the works of an author while simultaneously deploring many of that author's inherently held cultural prejudices, then it is possible to appreciate, on its own scale, the work of Edgar Wallace (1875-1932), the phenomenally successful British Colonial author whose work is all but forgotten today. And yet Wallace has much to tell the contemporary reader about the construction of the British Empire, and the inherent inequities that comprise that Empire's self-perpetuating social fabric. H. G. Wells, Rudyard Kipling, Charles Dickens and other Victorian/Colonial authors somehow endure in the public consciousness, but Wallace (although he still commands the attention of a few readers, and even has a scholarly society dedicated to the study of his works) has been all but obliterated from memory, even though his life and works are the subject of an excellent critical biography by Margaret Lane, Edgar Wallace: The Biography of a Phenomenon. This act of erasure, as I will argue, is not entirely surprising, for Wallace's fictive voice represents one of the last unexamined sites of British Colonial discourse, sweeping across an astounding output of work as a novelist, short story writer, newspaper essayist, dramatic critic, playwright, and even as the director of some of the films made from his various texts. Thus, for many, Wallace is better forgotten than examined, as a literary relic of an age of social inequity and exploitation best left to gather dust on the shelves of the various libraries and bookshops where one can still find his mostly out-of-print texts.

April 1875 im Londoner Stadtteil Greenwich als uneheliches Kind das Licht der Welt. Im Alter von neun Tagen adoptiert ihn der Lastträger Georg Freeman. Er verbringt seine Kindheit und Jugend in ärmlichen Verhältnissen, übernimmt später Gelegenheitsarbeiten als Zeitungsverkäufer und schafft es schließlich kleine Artikel für Sensationsblätter zu schreiben. Bald arbeitet er sich bis zum Chefredakteur vor und reist nach Südafrika, um über den Burenkrieg zu berichten. Er verfasst auch Kurzgeschichten, Gedichte und 1904 schließlich seinen ersten Kriminalroman "Die vier Gerechten". In den folgenden Jahren erscheinen von ihm mehr als 150 zum Teil äußerst erfolgreiche Romane, Kurzgeschichten, Theaterstücke sowie Filmdrehbücher, wie z. B. das Treatment von "King Kong" (USA 1933). Noch vor der Uraufführung des Films stirbt Edgar Wallace - durch seine Spielleidenschaft hoch verschuldet - am 10. Februar 1932 in Hollywood.
