    Extractions: Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny Probably his best book in terms of style, sweep and scope. It is well written enough and has enough "scope", whatever that is, to qualify as "literature" to many more high-minded than I. I just like it a lot. I was just re-reading it last night, which is probably why I'm writing this now. It is about an isolated human colony on an unnamed planet. The colonists are of eastern Indian (not Native American) descent. In order to combat the indigenous terrors of the planet, the leaders of the colony develop Aspects and Attributes (ok, they are really superpowers) patterned on the Hindu pantheon. They do this with a mixture of technology, psionics, and just plain will. They also make reincarnation a reality, though by technological means rather than supernatural. In the process, the crew members of the colony ship, who become gods and demigods, keep the "passengers" oppressed and in a rigid caste system. A number of crew members think this is unjust. But the crew leaders like being gods, and adopt a paternalistic, "they aren't ready" kind of attitude. One warning: Between chapters one and two, we flash back a number of years. This was not immediately obvious to me. I was confused until chapter four. So watch out for the timeframes in this novel as you go along. But it repays the effort. And is a good re-read even after you know what is going to happen.

Format: Novel Genre: Science Fiction Published: Dates read: 2001-11-08 to 2001-11-20 Summary: Lord of Light , Zelazny's third novel, is his finest book: a science fantasy in which the intricate, colorful mechanisms of Hindu religion, capricious gods, and repeated reincarnations are wittily underpinned by technology." (Amazon.com) This book was simply amazing: although it is almost incomprehensible at the start, and although the organization of its chapters serves only to confuse, I finished it deeply satisfied. The best part of Lord of Light is the setting that Zelazny creates. (The following could be considered spoilers for purists who want to read the book fresh, but I think the next paragraph will help new readers. Still, a warning.) ***SPOILERS*** Lord of Light takes place on a world that was colonized long ago by humans. Since then the humans have discovered the science of transmigrating minds from one body to the next, in effect achieving immortality. Moreover, several humans have trained their own minds and bodies to such a degree that they have almost god-like powers. These superhumans have established rule over the "normal" humans in a manner that almost perfectly replicates the mythology of Hinduism: the superhumans take on the names and roles of various Hindu gods, the process of transmigrating minds is portrayed as reincarnation, and there is a Heaven (albeit a mechanical one) where the gods live. ***END SPOILERS***

Er wurde ein in hohem Grade beachteter Verfasser und war, tatsächlich, einer der feinsten Verfasser seiner Zeit, mit 50 Büchern und 150 Kurzheschichten. Roger verlor am 14. Juni 1995 seine Schlacht gegen Krebs in New-Mexico, wo er mit seiner Familie seit 1975 wohnte.
