still great after all these years
As a fellow longtime Alaska bush resident, I have long admired this book and believe it to be among the best two or three ever written on the collision between contemporary Alaska Native culture and the world Outside. This book was a masterpiece when it was written (especially those parts focusing on the life of his Yu'pik friend) and to this day remains a candidate for the most overlooked and under-read book focusing on modern Alaska Native life. No varnish or overwrought cultural worship, just an empathetic, realistic account. This book is brave and unflinching and inspired me as a writer. I wrote Carey a letter years ago telling him how much I appreciated this book and I still feel the same. Read it if you can find it. Carey and his gem of a book deserved far better than they got. --Nick Jans, contributing editor, Alaska Magazine.

This book is lyrical, yet full of the stark reality of life in Bush Alaska--and in this case, the raw bleakness and strange loveliness found uniquely on the Lower Kuskokwim River. good colour theory, but lots of filler
The first half of this book is a good introduction to colour theory, though it could be a little intimidating to the colour novice. The rest of it seems to be a product catalog, though if that's what you need it excels there. There's useful bits about configuring color management for various applications but little about how you actually *use* this technology in print production. It's also very expensive, but considering how little published information on color management exists, it's not too unreasonable.

Why doesn't the color match??? Read this book!

A wonderful tale, beautifully illustrated
I bought this book for the illustrations. As an illustrator myself, I buy quite a few children's books just to savor the pictures.

But this one yielded a great surprise - a classic tale of a valiant 'shippe's cat,' set in Elizabethan times. I dohope it is published again someday.

I love this book, rich language, wonderful rhyme, extraodinary illustratons
This book is fabulous - and highly recommended. This book has kept my children (two preschoolers) fascinated. The illustrations are richly detailed, gorgeous colours, and full of things which invite question and discussion.

The rhyme itself is a rollicking yarn about a cat on a boat in Drake's time which is captured by Spaniards - the cat is put in a Spanish dungeon and escapes.

Wonderfully whimsical writing from Adams, rich use of language which extends your children further, and enough for them to leaf through and look at on their own. Highly enjoyable to read to them as it has a children's and an adults level.

This is one book I would recommend having in your children's library to read for them! They will love it!

Lost Treasure
Really a pity to see such a treasure of a book out-of-print.I grew up with Dad reading this to me (am now 25) and the challenge of its language and verse, not to mention exquisitley curious art, broadens a child's horizon's far more than the PC drivel we print today.

Too bad I can't find a mint copy anywhere :/
