3-0 out of 5 stars Novel probes into family court and grandparents vs. parents...
Warren Adler's "Twilight Child" is a heartfelt novel. It could break your heart, but yet some parts feel really contrived, and almost all the main characters do something boneheaded. In this novel, a woman with some self-esteem issues finds love with her boss after she is widowed. She eventually finds enough strength in herself to move on and remarry, but she also takes her son out of the lives of her dead husband's parents.A couple years pass, and the grandparents decided to sue to try to get visitation, and the courtroom drama starts as the judge has to weigh the law against human emotion, and find a solution that is fair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Grandparents Have Rights?
The untimely death of her husband, Chuck Waters, in an oil-drilling rig accident should have filled his widow, Frances, with despair.Or so thought his grieving parents, Charlie and Molly Waters. But Frances, abandoned by her husband for months at a time and left to raise their child Tray on her own, feels relieved and free.Newly married to engineer Peter Graham, Frances wants to put her bad memories of her first marriage behind her and go on with life in her new family. But where does that leave Tray?

Frances insists that all contact be temporarily severed between Tray and his Waters grandparents.Peter is adopting him and his parents will become Tray's paternal grandparents. It's only temporarily, she assures Charlie and Molly, until Tray has adjusted to his new situation. But Charlie and Molly, distraught at the death of their only child, long for visits with their only living blood descendant.

Desperate for visitation rights with Tray, Charlie and Molly go to court. They have a chance, says their lawyer. They live in a state which allows visits by grandparents if the court rules that they are "in the best interests of the child."But Peter has legally adopted Tray, and Charlie and Molly didn't contest the adoption.Legally, Charlie and Molly are no longer Tray's grandparents.

Troubled that the judge might rule that allowing Charlie and Molly to visit is in Tray's best interests, and pregnant again with Peter's child, Frances is upset at the prospect of a prolonged court battle. But she will not change her mind.Tray is her child and she resents interference from others over how she will raise him.

How will the judge rule?

The reader's heart nearly breaks during the sections about Charlie's retirement, and his and Molly's feeling disconnected from their power sense of family. But the lonely Frances, abandoned by her irresponsible first husband and his wanderlust, who has now found happiness and security in her new marriage, arouses compassion and empathy as well.Above all, the reader wants to know how Tray is doing with all the fighting in the background of his life.So does the judge, which brings about the resolution of the story. It's a powerful portrayal of four adults who can't stop loving the child that links them all. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Mayhem and revenge abound in Washington mystery
"American sextet" is less a mystery than a story of a jaded "Washington Post" reporter's elaborate plan at revenge, and higher fame. Jason Martin, the Post reporter, finds a naive, but attractive young woman named Dorothy Curtis to seduce six powerful men in Washington, and use the information they inadvertly provide to suit his ends. Soon, the conspiracy unravels, and Dorothy is found dead under a bridge known for suicides. This is where Fiona Fitzgerald comes in. Fiona is determined to learn the truth about Dorothy as her personal life goes to pieces due to her affair with the husband of a Congressial aide. Eventually, Fiona and Jason clash, and the American Sextet will do anything to cover up their connection with Dorothy. A bit tame nowaways, but this book was written pre-Gary Hart and pre-Clinton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Before the D.C. days of Clinton
As the name implies, there is a lot of sex in this book . . . and how! A daring book about political seduction on a grand scale. Written before the days of Clinton (surprisingly), this book is not for the skirmish and faint of heart. I loved it! ... Read more

Product Description
Eduardo Allesandro Palmero is dead-killed by an exploding bomb

Three women loved Eduardo, the prominent exile from the deposed Allende government: the ambassador's wife, the millionaire widow, and the aging revolutionary. Through the power of his sexuality, the South American diplomat recruits these three Washington women to engage in international terrorism. Unaware of the consequences and greedy for the man's erotic favor, they willingly and eagerly allow themselves to be manipulated.Unknown to each other, the women unwittingly enter into the man's bizarre, devious, and destructive plot. When they discover how they have been duped by their need for erotic fulfillment, they become enraged. Overcoming their jealousy toward each other, they band together to destroy their ruthless lover.

As the FBI and CIA wrangle among themselves, Alfred Dobbs, a reflective CIA maverick, digs into Eduardo's past and finds himself envying this debonair charmer.

Revulsion against wealth has converted Eduardo to the side of revolution. The distinguished, conservative Palmero family is a study in decadence: from the cold vindictiveness of the mother to the lecherous passion of a father who still believes in noblesse oblige. As Eduardo's past unravels, Dobbs begins to question the reasons for his death. He believes that the answer lies not with the slippery Chilean ambassador but with the women of Eduardo.

Amid this high-tension political intrigue, Warren Adler dramatizes the gray world of good and evil. As Alfred Dobbs comes closer to the solution, the reader also begins to believe that the "whys" of Palmero's life are more important than his deeds.

This is an erotic thriller of deep sexual overtones and explicit descriptions. It is not for the faint of heart. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Oversexed and characters that are unsympathetic ruin the story...
Warren Adler's "Casanova Embrace" is an overdone and oversexed book about 3 women and their lover, a Chilean in exile. At the beginning of the book, Eduardo the Chilean, is killed in an explosion, and a CIA man tries to piece together the who and whys of the murder. On the way, we meet three women that bore us to tears, and by the time we get to the part where they know they've been had, we don't care.

Product Description
The children in The War of the Roses were determined not to repeat the devastation, destruction and self-immolation engendered by their parents, which were evoked in that bestselling novel and then the most famous movie ever made about divorce.

In The Children of the Roses, Josh marries Victoria for evermore, and his hugely overweight, happy-go-lucky sister Evie finds pleasure at the trough and through a series of live-in lovers. But in all-too-human, unpredictable and often hilarious turns, the betrayals begin.

Soon Josh and Victoria are on their way to their own form of internecine warfare and disaster. Victoria's demonic and male-hating mother and the overstuffed and ever-sympathetic Evie are their constant counterfoils. Antagonists include a suave headmaster, who turns out to be a relentless sexual predator, and a blackmailing husband. The couple's children, Michael and little Emily, engineer some stunning surprises of their own that will forever change their parents' wayward ways. From noted storyteller Warren Adler, The Children of the Roses is an absolute page-turner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A One Night Read
Adler takes the reader on a ride that keeps them on the edge of their seat. This book picks up where War of the Roses left off. The children of the Roses have their idiosyncrasies as a result of their parents' horrible death. They take this with them in life and relationships. One never married and one did to a truth junkie. Living their lives as they wish and living their lives in reality don't match. This creates tension that has the reader turning the pages to find out what will eventually win: their dreams or life's seedier side.

4-0 out of 5 stars Troubling Twist on Divorce
This book made me laugh and cry. Mr. Adler has a bizarre sense of humor that enriches this story and makes it quite believable, despite the qualms I had regarding certain incidents. There is a part of the novel that troubles me and that is the question of how far a parent will go to protect and advance her child if faced with a sexual predator who has power over that child. This issue is a central theme of this wonderful novel. And yet I am still conflicted about that one incident. As with The War of the Roses, despite my misgivings, I thought it was a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEFORE YOU DIVORCE; MUST READ
The thing about this novel is how through humor and deep characterization we find ourselves entranced by the various and surprising plot turns that move this story forward. I found myself rooting for the children to find ways to bring their battling parents together and restore the family. While I wouldn't want to spoil the reading experience by giving away the ending, I must say it was certainly worth the trip. This book is must reading for anyone contemplating the breakup of a family with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ FOR PARENTS DEALING WITH DIVORCE
Mr. Adler's novel described an experience where my ex-husband and I decided to use the "nesting" process which meant keeping our children living in the family house while we took turns taking care of the children on alternate weeks. It didn't work for us since we found ourselves competing for our children's love and not following our joint child rearing rules.
"The Children of the Roses" dealt with this situation with deep honesty which made the process chosen by the divorcing parents all too real and harrowing. Mr. Adler's incite into the trauma of divorce is awesome. Every divorcing parent should read this book and learn how good intentions can backfire. I found the novel compelling and while the humor is dark, I caught myself laughing through my tears. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun Reading but Nothing More
I read this book for my book club.I found the stories nice, light reading with some definitely hitting home as a young father. Some of the characters seemed a little ridiculous, especially those in the two related to 9-11 and the divorce case. The best story was the one about the dog and the writer. The author's age was apparent in his writing which provided me with insights into the thoughts and views of his generation but made any mention of sex a little awkward.Overall I would recommend it to someone who is looking for something that isn't very serious. ... Product Description
The power of the press to manipulate and persuade comesunder the microscope in this tense exploration of the media and theway in which it influences public opinion. In the world of the mightyprinted word, what is the fine line between ethics and the pursuit ofpower? This is the essential question that haunts this classic storyof the virtue and perils of media power.

Under the bold leadership of executive editor Nick Gold andwith the superb investigative reporting of Harold Gunderstein, theinfluential Washington Chronicle had dared to stand alone at first inits pursuit of evidence against a President whom it despised andbelieved to be corrupt. The paper's efforts had borne fruit, and anadministration had fallen.

Now Gunderstein has a lead on an explosive story which woulddestroy the career of the Chronicle's own liberal champion, apresidential hopeful whose leadership the paper feels the countrydesperately needs. The Chronicle was founded on specific principles ofdedication to the pursuit of the truth, and since the "witness" toSenator Burton Henderson's alleged secret fears retribution andrefuses to be quoted, editor Nick Gold insists on strict adherence tothe Chronicle's policy of attribution or a corroborating second sourceand refuses to run the story. On principle, he resists bothGunderstein's professional instincts and his argument that it wouldnot be the first time the Chronicle had run an unattributed story inorder to smoke out additional sources.

As Gunderstein relentlessly pursues corroboration of thestory, he is put under great pressure to drop the investigation. Thedilemma becomes a very personal crisis for Nick Gold. If he runs thestory, he must break with the cherished principles and the resultwould be the destruction of a possibly innocent man whose leadershipNick feels is so important to the nation. Will he have put hispersonal opinion of the country's needs above the Chronicle'sdedication to pursuit of truth-or worse?

Clashing relationships within the media and in the politicalarena reveal the motives, insecurities, and thirst for ascendancybetween factions thirsting for power. With rich emotionalcharacterizations, this story tears the curtain from the spin-doctorsand sinister figures that people the power corridors of the nation'scapital. Anyone who wants deeper insights into the nature ofWashington intrigue will revel in this tense and suspenseful tale ofwhat really goes on in the cradle of democracy. ... Read more

Excerpt: Owen Wister (July 14, 1860 July 21, 1938) was an American writer and "Father" of western fiction. Owen Wister was born on July 14, 1860, in Germantown, a neighborhood within the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father, Owen Jones Wister, was a wealthy physician, one of a long line of Wisters raised at the storied Belfield estate in Germantown. He was a distant cousin of Sally Wister. His mother, Sarah Butler Wister, was the daughter of actress Fanny Kemble. He briefly attended schools in Switzerland and Britain, and later studied at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he was a classmate of Theodore Roosevelt, an editor of the Harvard Lampoon and a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon (Alpha chapter). Wister graduated from Harvard in 1882. At first he aspired to a career in music, and spent two years studying at a Paris conservatory.
