5-0 out of 5 stars A deeply-felt memoir of childhood
James Agee's short novel "The Morning Watch" shows how, by 1950, Agee had matured as a writer and thinker. For all of its stunning beauty and sensuous description, "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" (1941) lacks the cohesiveness and careful planning that distinguish "The Morning Watch."The latter work shows Agee writing at the height of his powers and treating a story, set during Holy Week in an Episcopalian boarding school closely modeled on Agee's own St. Andrew's, that resonates with deep religious feeling and sharply observed memories. The first two sections of "The Morning Watch" show the strong influence on Agee of James Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist," but, if anything, Agee's depiction of a young boy's undergoing spiritual torment is more believable and more sharply written than Joyce's account. The third and final part of "The Morning Watch," set in the early morning hours of Good Friday, is a beautifully-conceived reworking of Christ's passion as experienced by three young boys who have played hooky from school and who learn their own capacity for blood lust and tolerance for violence.Agee's fondness for children and animals and his deep love of Scripture are vividly evoked in this last section.

"The Morning Watch" is short--under 125 pages--but it is an unforgettable introduction to Agee's magisterial novel "A Death in the Family" (published posthumously in 1957) and a gem of a novel in its own right. It is easy to see why Flannery O'Connor so enjoyed "The Morning Watch" when it was first published, for Agee's clear-eyed understanding of his characters' fascination with violence and their coming to terms with their own possibilities for greatness would motivate many of O'Connor's own characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars a satrical novella of religion
this story commonly displays the common curiosty in youth with religion and somehow how Man welcomes Evil in some form or another(as of the snake in the end) when Richard gradually excepts it as a common thing to beaccepted by his peers it's nostaglic, dark gothic style illustrates theconfusion of a deeply religious boy in a world of evil ... Product Description
A compelling story of place, Steward's Fork explores northwest California's magnificent Klamath Mountains--a region that boasts a remarkable biodiversity, a terrain so rugged that significant landscape features are still being discovered there, and a wealth of natural resources that have been used, and more recently abused, by humans for millennia. James K. Agee, a forest ecologist with more than fifty years experience in the Klamaths, provides a multidimensional perspective on this region and asks: how can we most effectively steward this spectacular landscape toward a sustainable future? In an engaging narrative laced with personal anecdotes, he introduces the dynamics of the Klamath's ecosystems, including its geology and diverse flora and fauna, and then discusses its native cultures and more recent inhabitants, laying out the effects of industries such as logging, mining, water development, and fishing. Assuming that people will continue to have a close tie to the Klamaths, Agee introduces the principles of restoration ecology to offer a vision of how we can responsibly meet the needs of both people and natural organisms, including plants, fish, and wildlife. This debate over the future of the Klamath's rich landscape widens into a provocative meditation on nature, culture, and our relationship with the earth itself. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book, based on its strong research on forest and fire ecology, however...
I enjoyed reading this book, as I am with all pieces Klamath Bioregion natural history--and you will to if you interested the area's natural and human history. The author covered many topics in a readable fashion. I recommend this book, but do have some comments on some topics covered in the book.
Most topics were resurrected "tid bits" from previous publications by other experts. With exception to forest ecology, I feel the author should have cited his sources in the text based on how much others work was relied on at times. The author is obviously strong in forest and fire ecology--provided is a good overview of issues surrounding these topics. This was by far the best and most exciting section of this book. The author appeared to choose many topics somewhat in line with his own experience of the area. As a result, much of the book is centered around Trinity County, which is only a portion of this vast region. The chapters on restoring rivers were weak, and by no means a synthesis of all the regions major river issues. The author covered historic gold mining somewhat exhaustively and could have covered more recent and relevant topics. For example, the author offered little to no discussion on grazing in northern Klamath wilderness areas or non-native fish introductions into wilderness areas, which are examples of long-term and major current issues in the region.
The author stated that Yellow-legged frogs were in decline in Stewart's fork based on the 64 flood and Red-legged frogs were replacing them. This statement is completely unfounded. First the author did not conduct any research to document any decline, and second, the Red-legged frog exists only in coastal regions-not in the Klamath Mountains. Lastly, the author called reservoirs "lakes" which is scientifically wrong. This region is vast and it would be tough to cover most elements.
I recommend this book to any Klamath Bioregion addict; I was just laboring through parts on usual suspects, such as dams, spotted owls, and salmon which are found in many other sources with better treatments.

Product Description

"Agee examines in depth the issues in the ecological context and history of fire, wild and human. He sheds considerable light on this most important topic. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants a thorough understanding of the ecological and management issues related to fire in the forests.

-International Journal of Forestr.

The structure of most virgin forests in the western United States reflects a past disturbance history that includes forest fire. James K. Agee, an expert in the emerging field of fire ecology, analyzes the ecological role of fire in the creation and maintenance of natural western forests, focusing primarily on forest stand development patterns. His discussion of the natural fire environment and the environmental effects of fire is applicable to a wide range of temperate forests. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal (and readable) text in fire ecology
One of the seminal books in fire ecology, regardless of what area of the world you're in. Despite the focus in this book on Northwestern forests, Agee provides one of the best overviews of wildland fire, fire effects, and fire history available, seamlessly integrating fire science, history, and policy into a seamless narrative. Agee's focus in this book is on Northwest forests, specifically on forest stand development patterns, yet his discussion of theory, the fundamental tenets of fire ecology and fire effects on an ecosystem are broadly applicable.

Great, very accessible writing style.
