From the name of his birthplace he also received the Latinized appellation Rubianus and is generally known as Crotus Rubianus. Johann was born at Dornheim, in Thuringia, c. 1480. At the age of eighteen he went to the University of Erfurt, then the chief centre of German Humanism, where he obtained his baccalaureate degree in 1500. Friendship with Conrad Mutianus and Ulrich von Hutten led him from being an upholder of Scholasticism to become an enthusiastic partisan of Humanism and a violent opponent of the older learning. In 1505 he induced Ulrich von Hutten to leave the monastery of Fulda, but in 1506 came back with the latter from Cologne to Erfurt, where in 1508 Crotus obtained a degree of Master of Arts. After this he was absent from Erfurt for a short time as tutor to Count von Henneberg, but by 1509 he had again returned to his studies and in 1510 was the head of the abbey school at Fulda. He now formed close relations with Reuchlin and his supporters in Cologne; about 1514 he was for a short time in Cologne, but soon returned to Fulda where he was ordained priest and obtained a small benefice. About 1515 he wrote the larger part of the Epistolae Obscurorum Virorum; the 'letters of obscure men' composed by him are the most violent in character, full of venom and stinging scorn against Scholasticism and monasticism. Excerpt: Jón Páll Sigmarsson (April 28, 1960 January 16, 1993) was a strongman, a powerlifter , and a bodybuilder from Iceland who won the World's Strongest Man Competition four times (1984, 1986, 1988, 1990). In 1984 Jón won the Icelandic bodybuilding title in the +90 kg. class. His achievements in powerlifting also include Icelandic records in the bench press and the squat, but his best performances were usually in the deadlift event, in which he set the European record many times and multiple world records in strongman competition deadlift variations, such as the rectangular handled wheel and one handed deadlift. In 1986, Jón first wrestled English Author and Guinness World Record Holder Sir Brian Sterling-Vete in a demonstration match for the TV news and print media held at Finnur Karlssons gymnasium in Reykjavik, Iceland. Halfway through the match Jón and Sterling had plotted to surprise the audience with a supposed angry outburst leading to the two of them demonstrating their skills as martial artists. This very typical showmanship became synonymous with both Jón and Sterling. In 1987, a contest called Pure Strength Challenge was held at the Huntly Castle in Aberdeenshire Scotland. In this event, Sigmarsson, Bill Kazmaier and Geoff Capes competed to define the strongest man of all time, where Jón won 8 out of 10 events. A famous quote from him is "there is no point in being alive if you cannot do the deadlift". In a tragic irony, he died at the age of 32 while performing this exercise in the gym. She was Federal Minister for family, seniors, women and youth affairs. In the 1980s East German school officials refused to admit Claudia Crawford (then Wiesemüller) to a college preparatory school due to her participation in Catholic church youth activities. Education officials required her to learn a trade before she could enroll in college. While attending secondary education at a polytechnical secondary school in Rostock she took vocational training in marine electronics from 1982 to 1984. In 1985 she studied automation and cybernetic engineering at the Technical University of Ilmenau, where she earned a graduate degree Diplom in 1990. After completing her studies, she accepted a position as a research assistant at the University of Ilmenau, but left within weeks after her election to the first freely elected East German parliament. Crawford is a Catholic, and she is active in the Catholic community. She is married to investigative journalist David Crawford of The Wall Street Journal.
