Product Description
This is a PhD dissertation. Around the time of his famous conversion in 386, Augustine planned to dedicate a treatise to each of the artes liberals. However, he finished only a work on grammar and the first part of the De Musica, which deals with rythmus; the second part, which was to treat melos, was never written, since Augustine became occupied with his ecclesiastical career. The present work is the first critical edition of the sixth book of the De musica; the latin text is accompanied by an English translation. ... Read more

Product Description
The Rhetoric of St. Augustine of Hippo is the definitive edition of St. Augustine's fourth book of De Doctrina Christiana, the text that deals with rhetoric and its uses in Christian discourse. This edition of DDC contains both the original Latin and Sister Terese Sullivan's brilliant translation. An introduction discusses the historical importance of DDC. Seven seminal essays written during the last seventy-five years provide representative discussions of the important topics of DDC. The volume includes a detailed, synoptic outline of all four books, with a conclusion by Amy K. Hermanson that synthesizes Augustine's rhetorical theory in a religious context. This is the only edition of its kind. It will remain the standard for a long time to come. ... Read more

Product Description
St Augustine of Hippo was the earliest thinker to develop a distinctively Christian political and social philosophy. He does so mainly from the perspective of Platonism and Stoicism; but by introducing the biblical and Pauline conceptions of sin, grace and predestination he radically transforms the 'classical' understanding of the political. Humanity is not perfectible through participation in the life of a moral community; indeed, there are no moral communities on earth. Humankind is fallen; we are slaves of self-love and the destructive impulses generated by it. The State is no longer the matrix within which human beings can achieve ethical goods through co-operation with other rational and moral beings. Augustine's response to classical political assumptions and claims therefore transcends 'normal' radicalism. His project is not that of drawing attention to weaknesses and inadequacies in our political arrangements with a view to recommending their abolition or improvement. Nor does he adopt the classical practice of delineating an ideal State. To his mind, all States are imperfect: they are the mechanisms whereby an imperfect world is regulated. They can provide justice and peace of a kind, but even the best earthly versions of justice and peace are not true justice and peace. It is precisely the impossibility of true justice on earth that makes the State necessary. Robert Dyson's new book describes and analyses this 'transformation' in detail and shows Augustine's enormous influence upon the development of political thought down to the thirteenth century. ... Product Description
The political and social ideas of St Augustine of Hippo are of central importance to the historian of late classical and medieval political thought: Augustine offers a penetrating critique of the moral and political claims of imperial Rome, and he is one of the founders of the Christian political thought of the middle ages. But the student's task is made difficult by the fact that Augustine did not write a single, systematic political treatise. His political remarks are always incidental to his theological and pastoral concerns; they occur in many different contexts; they have to be dissected out from a great variety of works. In this volume, Dr Dyson brings together an extensive selection of primary sources and provides a detailed commentary on them. The result is a full and wide-ranging narrative account of St Augustine's thinking on the human condition, justice, the State, slavery, private property and war. This comprehensive sourcebook will be of value to students of St Augustine at all levels. ... Read more

It also examines photographic reproductions of scenes from two major art works which depict the transferral - the 14th-century marble sculpture of the "Arca di Sant'Agostino" in S. Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, and paintings from an anonymous late 15th-century South German, "Vita Sancti Augustini". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Augustine in brief
The Fleming H. Revell Company put together four slim volumes of spiritual classics, one each for Augustine of Hippo, Soren Kierkegaard, Martin Luther, and Blaise Pascal.I'm not sure if they were intending to have further volumes available, but in any event, these four were published, and make an interesting little set of spiritual classics.

I say 'little set', for these books are small indeed. Each has 64 pages, and the book's footprint size is barely that of a large index card. These are pocket-books in a true sense of the word. They also offer a way of being introduced to masters of spiritual writing in a way that is brief, accessible and not intimidating.

In the introduction to the book on Augustine, Robert van de Weyer (who has published collections on things in many religious traditions, including Celtic spirituality, Islam, and a print of an early version of the Book of Common Prayer) states that Augustine may be the most influential Christian ever - both Catholics and Protestants base much of their theologies on Augustine (or react to his theology), and the Orthodox treat him as a venerated father of the church.

Van de Weyer gives a brief discussion of Augustine's life in large part derived from the classic work, Confessions. This includes Augustine's early rejection of scripture, his various times of bewilderment and confusion, and his eventual conversion.Van de Weyer draws more widely on Augustine's work to give pieces relating to doctrine and to spirituality, as well as some prayers, including the famous 'Come, Lord, set us on fire.'The book is decorated throughout with colour plates of images inspired by the writings.

This is far from a comprehensive book, and in no way a critical commentary. However, for brief kinds of reading, lectio divina and other kinds of inspirational or meditative reading with a bit of historical and theological content thrown in for good measure, this text on Augustine is a good volume to use, together with the other volumes in this series. It is a bit difficult to find, but worth it.

This study is an examination of the theological basis and the social roots and implications for Augustine's theology of ordained ministry, especially as found in his letters. Issues of great contemporary interest (married priesthood, simony, women as ministers) are discussed.
