From the supplier: Djuna Barnes's relationship with her grandmother, Zadel Barnes, was one of the most influential of her life. The correspondence between the two has an erotic aspect that has been interpreted as evidence of their incestuous relationship. However, in the context of the general tone of the family's correspondence, it is more likely that Zadel Barnes meant them as humorous rather than amorous references. Djuna Barnes's preoccupation with Zadel Barnes is revealed in the many characters whom she modelled on her grandmother.

From the supplier: 'Ryder' can be interpreted as Djuna Barnes's definitive statement against women's bondage to childbearing. Barnes's family chronicle has been interpreted as a male-centered text which subverts patriarchy from within. An analysis of the historical context reveals that the time-span covered in the novel was also the period of redefinition of motherhood when new found concepts such as contraception and birth-control were gaining popularity. 'Ryder,' in capturing the pain of child-birth and changing attitudes towards motherhood, is a text of its times.

From the supplier: Analysis of the unusual relationship of Djuna Barnes and Charles Henri Ford and the differences in their sexual economies and safeties help in understanding Barnes's 'Behind the Heart' written for Ford. The emendation of 'boy' to 'groom' in the story takes on additional meaning in the context of their personal lives and relationships. The subtle exploration of erotic intimacy is in keeping with the 'scopophilia,' mutual pleasure in looking, revealed in their correspondence.

From the supplier: Djuna Barnes's treatment of the bestial blurs the accepted boundaries between nature and civilization and in so doing challenges the essentializing of women as nature. Traditionally women are seen as representing the procreative, maternal functions associated with nature, whereas men are masters and cultural creators. Barnes inverts such readings by bringing her animals and plants indoors and by merging the bestial and human. Barnes uses the bestial as code and ritual to give women a new context where simplistic equations of female to nature are not possible.

From the supplier: Djuna Barnes's treatment of lesbians is different from her portrayal of blacks and Jews in 'Nightwood.' Critics who have interpreted all three as representatives of the exotic Other have ignored Barnes's privileging of the white lesbian and the alienation of Jews and blacks. The story is essentially the story of Robin and Nora and the other people of the night such as Nikka and Felix are not included. The politics of 'Nightwood' is not an uncomplicated championing of all the Others of Western culture.

Book Description
This digital document is an article from The Review of Contemporary Fiction, published by Review of Contemporary Fiction on September 22, 1993. The length of the article is 3093 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

From the supplier: Djuna Barnes's 1928 book, 'Ladies Almanack,' was written in a cultural context where increasing number of career women were creating female bonds other than the traditional mother-daughter relationship. Sexology and psychoanalysis, which were attempts to regulate female sexuality, were symptomatic of society's reaction. Barnes's book was a continuation of society's reaction and an intervention into that reaction. 'Ladies Almanack' was an examination of the process of lesbian 'reproduction.' Barnes can be accused of being reductionist in her treatment of the link between class and lesbianism.
