Product Description

Behan's friends and relatives, and people in his literary circle, have claimed he was not a prolific letter-writer.Even Behan himself has been quoted as saying, "Whoever writes my biography will get no help from my letters.I never write any."But in fact there is a substantial body of letters to and from Behan, who not only corresponded with seventeen periodicals but wrote to relatives, friends, IRA colleagues, civil servants, theatrical directors, publicans, and complete strangers. As in the case of Oscar Wilde, the search for Behan's letters has been hampered by their dispersal to widely scattered and unexpected places. The surviving letters that Mikhail was able to locate, however, proved well worth the trouble it took to uncover them.In addition to providing a vital record of one of the giants of Irish literature, Behan's letters -- especially those written without thought of publication -- give a far better sense of his exuberant verbal style than his plays or poetry.Mikhail introduces each letter and explains the circumstances in which it was written. He also annotates the letters, elucidating difficulties, noting the location and ownership of the letters whenever possible, and giving biographical information about the correspondents. The Letters of Brendan Behan also includes four poems that appear here for the first time, as well as extracts from early writings never before published.Numerous letters to editors, refused publication because of their outspokenness, are published here for the first time, and others, previously cut or censored, now appear in their original form. For anyone interested in Irish literature or contemporary drama -- and especially for readers and scholars of Behan's work -- The Letters of Brendan Behan is an invaluable collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Boyle's book is an important work for understanding Brendan Behan . I'm studying Irish lit, Yeats , Wilde and Behan. Boyle quotes Wildein this book. Wilde and Behan both died young and both were imprisoned Behan for IRA activities, Wilde for sex . Its interesting how each handled it andwhat resulted from it. Boyle does not include analyses of Confessions of anIrish rebel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Seeking Out A Copy
These short sketches by Brendan Behan are indicative of his immense talent as an observer of character and culture. A rich variety of stories and story fragments, After The Wake, is immersed in Irish culture as lived by ordinary working class Dubliners. Behan writes with understanding and his prose is almost musical in it's tempo and pace. This collection is an important contribution to modern Irish literature and a fine way to be introduced to Brendan Behan for the uninitiated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Typical understated brilliance from Behan.
After The Wake is absolutely one of my favorite books;the stories are by turns poignant, hilarious, sad and knowing. This truly is Behan at his best, writing with the rhythmic language of the working class and withinsight into human character few authors can equal. In addition, Behan'sknack for setting a scene or introducting a character in very few words isin full flourish;I truly felt as if I KNEW the characters (their facialexpressions, histories, bad luck - all of it) in a few short sentences.Inshort, After The Wake is excellent on all counts and is recommended notonly as a stellar work of fiction, but also as a perfect introduction tothe work of Brendan Behan.

5-0 out of 5 stars a scintillating set of Dublin vignettes
Behan's collection of shorts, including the title story, evokes the richness of Irish language and humour that made Wilde, Shaw, and Behan such legends, without resorting to the didacticism of Swift and Beckett.By turns heartbreaking, hilarious, and downright scandalous, Behan's vigniettes never fail to give what Joyce's Dubliners only suggested:the warm-blooded humanity of Ireland, including its heartbreak and petty follies. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
An essential text in the development of modern British drama First staged by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop company at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, London, in 1958, The Hostage is a play about a Cockney soldier held as a hostage in a Dublin lodging house in exchange for an IRA man who is to be hanged in Belfast. Civic Guards accidentally shoot him in a raid on the house. It is a witty and often profound comment on Anglo-Irish relationships and on the Irish themselves. This is Behan's best-known and most popular play and a classic of the modern stage.A magnificent entertainment which "crowds in tragedy and comedy, bitterness and love, caricature and portrayal, ribaldry and eloquence, patriotism and cynicism..." (Harold Hobson, The Times) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Brendan Behan Is A Very Funny Man.
HOLD YOUR HOUR AND HAVE ANOTHER is actually a collection of short articles written by Behan for THE IRISH PRESS. Many describe incidents from his own life. Some take place in pubs. My favorite is entitled "The Hot Malt Man and the Bores."

Behan is a very funny man amd the illustrations by Beatrice Behan add even more humor to this rather short but thoroughly enjoyable book.
