5-0 out of 5 stars A book about stones?
I may have only started reading this book, but I have subject to think it is pretty good.Garnet is a character that many people could be able to relate to, along with Raphaella. After a few days of thinking this book was actually about stones, I decided to actually read it and find out what it is really about.Truth is, the reason behind the title isn't actually about the stones, but how the stones are used.So after an hour or so of asking people, "guess what my book's about?" I now know the correct answer to my question.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great read for teens without sounding like it's for teens
The test of good teen literature is that it not sound like teen literature, and Bell passes the test. His characters are credible and well drawn, especially Garnet.Though too resourceful for an 18-year-old in my reckoning, his thoughts are those of a real teenage male.

"Love at first sight-what a crock. The whole notion had probably been dreamed up by some tenth-rate dramatist in the old days, some loser with a quill pen who needed to move the story along quickly and was too lazy or unimaginative to develop a believable love affair between his characters. So he wrote a scene where the man and the woman catch sight of each other, and BANG, they're in love.Sure." (p. 14).

The intuitive, spiritual Raphaella is refreshingly original and does not fall into any teen stereotype.Garnet's Dad, the antique dealer, provides the comic relief. He shares just enough of Garnet's cynical sarcasm for the reader to know where Garnet got his, as in the following exchange:

"Garnet, what's that project you're working on?"
"Oh, nothing really."
"Sounds interesting." (p. 181).

Bell falls short only in his drawing of Garnet's mother, a career-obsessed foreign correspondent.Mom fits the Absent Parent stereotype so well that her character does little more than fill the category. As a result, the reader winds up not caring during a false crisis near the novel's end in which Mom is almost fatally injured while covering a story in East Timor.

Minor flaws aside, teen readers will enjoy Stones because Garnet and Raphaella grapple with issues that real teens do:the temptation to drop out of high school (which Garnet almost does), fear of the spiritual, arguments with parents over careers, and sex.Authors of adolescent literature have a gentlemen's agreement with parents and book-award review committees that they will not portray or promote teenagers having sex.The challenge for the author of a teen romance novel, then, is to skip the sex without preaching.Bell handles the issue with poise.

"Kissing, hugging, holding hands. She [Raphaella] wouldn't go any further, not even when I felt her heart beating against my chest...She would stop and push me away." (p. 117)

That settles the issue as far as Bell is concerned, and the story gets back to work. This is the right approach for a book like this because Garnet's story is not about the dynamics of teen romance; it is about an ostracized personality who finds a friend in whom to grow.

Bell's writing style is vivid and confident and never descends to a teen level. The dialogue is convincing throughout, and the plot builds steadily and patiently without dawdling.Like all good writers of fiction, Bell reveals background facts to the reader using a variety of devices, sometimes through Garnet's first-person narratives, other times through simple dialogue.Bell takes too much license in only one instance:the solution of the novel's main mystery comes to Garnet in a dream, which Bell seems to hope the reader will accept as fact, an otherwise corn-ball ruse that the reader excuses only by virtue of the novel being about the supernatural.

On balance, though, Stones is an excellent novel for its audience. Teens will identify with the well drawn characters and the challenges they face.Attentive readers will also learn a thing or two about good writing by observing Bell's narrative skill.

2-0 out of 5 stars Exploring Biracial Identity
Zack is desperately trying to get a passing grade in his high school history class.Despite his bad test scores, his teacher has given him another chance. If he writes a research paper on some subject of local history, she will grade it and count it toward his final mark in her class.Zack is at a loss about what to research until he finds a leather box and a neck iron buried in his garden. As Zack's mother is black, the artifacts, obviously belonging to a former slave, have some meaning for him.Zack is able to research and write the entire story of the artifacts and their owner, who was a slave who migrated to Canada in order to live as a free man.

After writing his paper and passing his class, Zack starts thinking about his own family. He knows his father's white Jewish parents and their background, but he has never even met his mother's father or other family members, who all live in Mississippi. When Zack's parents take a trip without him, Zack takes the opportunity to drive to Mississippi to meet his grandfather and find out what happened to cause such a rift in their family. What he finds, though, ends up surprising him and helping him to understand his family better.

I liked the idea of a high school student taking this journey in order to find out something about himself and his family's identity.I also liked the ending of this book; it seemed realistic and not as easy as it could have been.

The relationship between Zack and Jen was far too easy, though. There seemed to be no basis for the two of them to start going out, especially after how Jen's cousin had treated Zack.

4-0 out of 5 stars history, family conflict, and racism
William Bell has written an excellent book that is a good introduction to racism and family conflict. His ability to weave historical events into his stories is sure to pique the interest of young teens.Bell's message is that history is about people, rather than just dates and facts. It doesn't have to be boring.

2-0 out of 5 stars interesting
Zack is the story of a biracial guy by the name of Zack, For a school project he decide to go to the south to find his black grandfather, who his mother hasen't been in touch with since her marriage of Zach's white Jewish father. When Zach find's his grandfather he realize why he and his mother hasn't been in contact. I felt there was something missing, and that more research should have been done.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Persoanl Connection
I have a personal connection to the story of Richard Pierpoint, having grown up where Zack's fictional farm is located. I was very interested to read William Bell's book. I found the story to be well constructed withregards to Zack's new life in rural Ontario, his discovery of Pierpoint'sstory and his family connection to Mississippi. The story flows well andthe use of language is very natural. The description of small Ontariodefinitely rings true. I think that many people (especially teenagers)would find it of interest. My personal interest in Pierpoint has led to abook that will be beneficial to those readers who want to know more aboutthis remarkable man. It is called "A Stolen Life: Searching forRichard Pierpoint" and is published by Natural Heritage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for young adults searching for their roots!
Zack is a teen who feels connected to his Father's Romanian Jewish heritage, but confused about "the family mystery."That is, his black mother never discusses her family background or why Zack has nevermet or learned about her side of the family. He searches out his blackroots after tracing the history of an African slave whose personal items hedug up on their Canadian property. The book touches upon issues ofracial identity, prejudice, family secrets and the damage that unresolvedissues can cause.Zach is comfortable with himself and his parents whichwas refreshing to me, as many biracial kids are represented as being bitterand confused.I bought this book as part of my own research into what itwill be like raising a biracial daughter.I gained some insight into whatI could do to encourage her self-esteem and pride.I was also impressedwith the literary quality of Bell's work. I believe this is a must-readfor not only biracial teens, but their parents, teachers and classmates. ... Read more

Alex and his dad are going to China!Alex is home when his dad get home. His dad tells them that they are going to China. They go and they are picked up from the airport by Lao Xu.They go to the Beijing Hotel and meet Eddie.A few days later a protest broke out.A few days later, the army comes.Lots of people were killed.Lao Xu was one of them.Alex runs for his life and gets shot in the lead.He hits the ground and passes out.He wakes in a Chineese civilions home. After he is healed, his friend Xin-hua takes him to the airport to find his dad. When they get to the airport, the Chineese soldiers take Xin-hua and kill her.Alex finds his dad in the airport and they go home. There is a lot of adventure, death, and happiness in Forbidden City.

There's a bit a adventure in Forbidden City.Alex and his dad get to go to China, which is an adventure in itself.Alex does a lot of exploring in the city of Beijing.Xin-hua and Alex have the adventure of trying to get to the airport without the soldiers figuring out that Alex is Canadian.

A lot of people die in this book. Many students, who are the ones that are protesting, were killed. Many civilions were killed.Lao Xu was killed.Xin-hua was killed. They were all killed by Chineese soldiers.

Alex is mostly the only one who is happy. He is happy when he gets to go to China. His dad is happy when he gets to go too China with Alex.Alex is happy when he gets home from China. So is his dad.

Happiness, death, and adventure are diffenently in Forbidden City.If there hadn't been as many people die, it would have been happier, but I guess the people dieing made it a better book.If you like book that are based on true events and you like stuff about China history, this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Forbidden City by William Bell

Forbidden City is a novel based on the events that swept Beijing in 1989 and the impact of this on one person's life.
The main character, a 17-year-old war history fanatic, Alex Jackson, traveled to the Chinese capital with his father, a CBC cameraman, to cover the Russian premier Gorbachev's visit. During this event, Alex experienced the excitement of being a reporter and of recording the events of the protest, but was apprehensive as the protest became more violent. When martial law was declared in Beijing, soldiers swept in, completely surrounding Tianamen Square with the help of AK47s and even tanks. The students and civilians who were part of the demonstrations were shot down without mercy.
Alex lived out this horror as he was shot by a soldier while carrying illegal videotapes of the demonstrations. At this point, his future was bleak until university student, Xinhua rescued him, and tried to help him smuggle the tapes out of China. Alex managed to get to the airport with the tapes and escaped with his father. Sadly, Xinhua was not so lucky, gunned down by a soldier as she tried to help Alex. After the massacre and finally back in his comfy home in Toronto, Alex destroyed all his military models, realizing war wasn't a game to him anymore.
Young people interested in modern Chinese history or modern international political events will be captivated by this book. Even those with no particular interest in modern Chinese history will find the pace and excitement of this novel quite compelling. This book shares same idea as The Red Scarf by Ji Li Jiang and The Power of Tianamen by Dingxin Zhao.
I personally chose this book for this assignment because it was short but punchy. I read reviews, which recommended this book as exciting to read, and I certainly found it so. The best parts of the book were when his best friend Lao Xu was shot down while trying to stop the killings and when Alex finally gets back home to Toronto with the smuggled tapes. These were the highlights for me because they were particularly thrilling but also moving because they showed much bravery and sacrifice.
I would definitely recommend this book. If you want a fast moving and gripping story, you too will enjoy this novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vivid details and engrossing story wow reader.By JMM
This book is a vivid description of the "events" at Tian An Men Square that fateful spring in 1989.This novel is about a seventeen year old boy named Alex who travels with his cameraman father to China, and witnesses the Tian An Men Square massacre.
In this book the author pays good attention to the facts while weaving a story around them.He used a journal format; from the point of view of the protagonist, Alex.William Bell (the author) paints a vivid picture of the horrendous tragedy in Beijing, and brings a realistic quality to his fiction. The characters develop well during the story, but the secondary characters are very one-dimensional.
The author brings a real and personal quality that to many of us is simply a far-off event that happened to a bunch of people we don't know.Although it is realistic, it is not a historian's account. Overall, it is a good, compelling, and vividly detailed novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars what to Exspect
well the story I read, I thought was great. This book is called Forbidden City. This book is about these two people that is going to film an event. well two of the character named Alexander Jackson and his dad goes to Beijing to do a report on the event. His dad does this and is risking his life as well as his son. Alex was a history freak, he collected soldiers in his basement.well they traveled to where they were going and it didn't turn out the way they expected. When they got there it was ok until the event was going on. They took out tanks and killed people. While this happened alex witness his chinese friend's death. well through this event he recorded it and when it was over his father didn't know his son recorded it. Well one month after the incident chen xi tong the mayor of Beijing submitted his report to the politburo of the communist party of china.

4-0 out of 5 stars Forbidden City, quick must-read for all highschool students!
Overall, William S. Bell does a good job putting a human face on the tragedies that took place in Tiananmen Square. He is refreshingly accurate with regard to factual information. The diary format is easy to read yet leaves the book open to interpretation and discussion. The story of the fictional characters Alex, Ted, Lao Xu, Eddie and Xin hua was created as a way to explain what happened to all sides involved in this tragic event. Bell combines a mixture of powerful emotions and dynamic characters to create a true must read for all highschool students. If highschoolers get anything out of this book at all, it will be that there are people out there who will stand up for what they believe in and that violence shouldn't be used as the answer to every problem our world faces. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A case from the notebooks of an indignant Plinyist
It can be hard, being a fan of Pliny the Younger, who, having left us a collection of dainty and gentlemanly correspondence and an embarrassingly fulsome panegyric of the emperor Trajan, has long considered the lightweight of early second century Latin prose.

It is even more difficult for would-be Plinyists in that Pliny himself makes much of his friendship and literary co-equality with Tacitus: next to that hard-nosed and cynical chronicler of imperial Roman history and the decline of the senatorial class, Pliny, with his loving catalogs of his villas and careful cultivation of aristocratic friendships, only looks worse.

I spend so much time on this background because it is the best way to understand Albert Bell's rather startling premise for his mystery series: Bell's young Pliny the Younger is actually a brilliant sleuth à la Sherlock Holmes; his sidekick Tacitus is a rather dim, superstitious, and conventionally loutish exemplar of the Roman upper class, a surprise to anyone who has read even a translation of any part of the historian's works!

Bell uses the conceit of "lost notebooks" of the Elder Pliny (he of the "Natural History" to give his hero (the Younger Pliny) access to forensic ideas and techniques that would never have occurred to an ancient amateur detective, but he turns backflips in order to present Pliny as older, wiser, more socially prominent, and more advanced in his career than Tacitus (the opposite appears to have been the case, to judge from the (admittedly) scanty evidence of Pliny's own letters).

The mystery itself involves murder, missing wills, long-lost heirs, and -- for Bell is by profession a scholar of early Christianity -- encounters with St. Luke and a party of Christians. Here, too, Pliny turns out to be surprisingly interested and accepting of Christian doctrines, when one compares his attitude here to the one expressed in his famous Letter on the Christians. The mystery is not as clever as many, and, while there is a great deal of attention to period details of life and mental habits in many respects, Bell too-often drops out the 1st century when he really wants to make Pliny shine with modern virtue.

It is not surprising, then, that one turns to the acknowledgments and finds that Bell is proud to tell us how much his friends compare him to Pliny the Younger! And indeed, this sort of casual, apparently obliviously-naive self-promotion of quite mediocre and unexceptional "virtues" is precisely the version of Pliny that Bell is fighting against.

1-0 out of 5 stars slogging thruslops in old smyrna
I am interested in classical civilization and i have enjoyed previously the spqr series. I thought i'd give this author a chance. I'm sorry i did. There is absolutely no mystery involved; rather, the author uses this as a vehicle for a set-up plot: Pliny the Younger and young Tacitus (The Clueless, or perhaps The Hardy Boys) meet the Christians (Luke and Timothy, no less) and together vanquish the Bad Guys (various pagan Romans).Every single plot point is telegraphed and Pliny and Tacitus behave in ways that have little resemblence to what might have been expected of young men of high Roman birth in the first century. The jokes are lame and much of the book involves Pliny pining for his father's books, thinking beautiful thoughts about the Christians, or having dinner conversations whose only purpose appears to be to delineate differences between Roman and Christian practices.

All that having been said,if you are a young Christian, say about 19, and have no knowledge of the period, this could be a valuable starting point for a more serious investigation into the early history of your faith. If so, I give you all best wishes for a happy journey.

3-0 out of 5 stars Roman road trip
"All Roads Lead to Murder" has some interesting story ambitions--the murder of a wealthy traveler in Smyrna to be solved by two prominent figures in Roman history before they achieved their fame.A sub-theme is the contrast of two religions of the period--the cult of Hecate and the growing cult of Christianity, the latter featuring the Apostle Luke.

Author Albert Bell develops a plausible, if somewhat convoluted, plot, but is less adept in his portrayal of believable characters. He aims to make the dialogue between his characters snappy repartee, but somehow they don't often come off that way.I suspect that this partly because he has chosen to put his protagonists, Pliny and Tacitus, in their early twenties. They seem to lack both consistent wit and gravitas. The secondary characters are also given less than credible dialogue and personalities as well.

I couldn't help but compare this book to Lindsay Davis' excellent Marcus Didius Falco series which takes place in roughly the same time period, but somehow makes murder and humor work well together. In this book, Pliny does not touch the hem of Falco's tunic.

A later book in the Pliny series is better, in my judgement, than "All Roads...". I would start with that book and skip this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Interesting plot, terrible character development
Bell has come up with an interesting story line but downright silly character development. He presents Pliny as some sort of modern day "touchy-feely" metrosexual and this spoils what could have been a good historical mystery.Pliny's attitudes toward slavery, Roman justice and his falling for a slave girl are an excellent example of the worst sort of writing error - giving a first century Roman character a 21th century mentality and ethos.Honest to goodness, by the time I was halfway through the book I expected Pliny to be spouting theories of modern forensic science, DNA testing and possible slavery "reparations."This book doesn't even begin to compare favorably with the writings of Davis and Saylor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for a light read
Not up to par as a mystery but a colorful array of characters. It was a fair read. I never got the flavor or could picture the place in my mind, it had great characters but I think there could have been more about their surroundings so that you could better feel at one with the story, ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Daily Devotional
This is an older daily devotional for the not-so-baby Christian. It takes you deeper and makes you think as well as bringing you to your knees in prayer. Don't miss it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, useful, and Biblical
In this age of Harry Potter, feel-good gospels, barking in the Spirit, demon warfare, and other spiritual silliness within our churches and without, William Gurnall is a welcome return to Biblical seriousness and a call to arms against the actual enemy on the actual battlefield: sin, and our own flesh.

For a solid, Biblical discussion on sin and spiritual warfare, "The Christian in Complete Armour", from which this devotional is excerpted, is without compare. The daily portions lose the context of the full work, but stand well enough on their own. That makes this devotional an ideal, daily revisiting for those who have read the full set. But for those new to Gurnall, or those ready to move from milk to meat, but wanting small, savory morsels, this devotional is perfect.

Though Mr. Gurnall's work is for everyone, his combat and military style will have particular appeal to men. (If you approach this book with that in mind, and you've been reading John Eldridge's books on "Christian manliness", repent and forget everything he said. Read this instead.)

This is absolute 6-star material compared to other devotionals, but I give it 4 stars compared to his full work, for an average of 5 stars. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, challenging. You'll grow or put the book away!
Absolutely the most challenging book I have read this year!It has made me evaluate how I look at the things around me and how I interpret events in my life.I have been more transformed into the image of Christ becauseof this book and I highly reccommend it to anyone who is serious aboutdying to flesh and living for Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gurnall better than current titles on Spiritual Warfare.
John Newton, who wrote the famous hymn Amazing Grace, said that Gurnall's original volume would be the one book he would want in addition to his Bible. Bell's devotional edition captures some of the best illustations and insights of Gurnall in a way that is enoyable and that will introduce you to the writings of this great Puritan Pastor. His understanding on Spiritual warfare is soundly Biblical and contrary to a lot of current titles that purport to be Biblical but are based on experience. Gurnall will Bless You! ... Read more

To do this as they then appeared to him, ignorant of every other experience, it is in vain to try, simply because the successive slides in the magic lantern of life are removed to make way for the next to come. Both the parents of the family of four children of which I was the third were rather advanced in middle age; so much so as to appear prodigiously aged to the juvenile apprehension. Not that the dear mother could have touched the mezzo cammino when I first remember her, since the youngest child, the " little sister," was only two years younger than myself; but she had left off the style of youth with its ways, wearing a white cap frilled with lace and a shawl even within the house, and from morning to night. These garments, one begins to think, were the fashion of the day, as even in portraits of the early part of the century children with their largewhite caps are to be seen. She was short and stout, slow and quiet: we were a second family, and the mother's heart had been buried with the first. It is unnecessary to say over again what has been recorded in the Memoir of my brother.1 Yet it was to me more especially, as I was her favourite I used to think, that the feeling was more particularly apparent. The name she often called me was not William but Lockhart, that having been the name of a favourite now in heaven. With an expression of sadness that puzzled and somewhat humiliated me, she used to correct herself, but I wished I could be Lockhart to her. Her mistake gave me a glimpse into a sort of antediluvian past, a primitive age passed in a Garden of Eden we should try to make ... ... Read more

Product Description
For too long, doctors in this country have given up their common sense - the very thing, which I believe made this country what it is, or sadly, what it was - for the comfort of scientific theory. No thinking, just follow the company line. If patients suffer... well, that's the price you pay for medical "progress." For years, I watched my colleagues ignore common sense evidence and make the most absurd diagnoses simply because they were more inclined to worship scientific procedures than to follow age-old wisdom. Unfortunately, I did the same, until the weight of evidence and the weight on my heart forced me to look, for the first time, at the wisdom of traditional home remedies and the value of my own good old American common sense. So I put a few of them together in this book with the sincere hope that my Grandma Bell's wisdom will help you recover your common sense, and take responsibility for your own health, the same way it did for me. Now I'm not saying all of these natural remedies are viable in all cases. No one in his right mind would claim that. But it's not often, if at all, that natural remedies can cause harm. At their best, they solve your problem without dangerous drugs. At worst, they don't work, but they don't usually harm you. Oftentimes, this non-invasive, non-drug method is the first way to go. Before you spend $50 at your doctor's office and start taking expensive drugs, try the simplest method first. The human body is a wonder. It can repair itself, and usually does without intervention. So, many times, the simplest way is the best. That's what I'm offering here - simple, common sense, tried and true remedies for that oh so painful ailment that just may work for you. - William Campbell Douglass II, MD ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick but tiny book!
This book is huge, though it's roughly 6 inches in length making for very small print. It covers just about every subject in the Civil War chronologically though it isn't very detailed. There is simply too much covered in order for it to be that way but this book does feature everything-just quick.I seldom refer back to this book for information as anyone who seriously studies the Civil War will have other or better books on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing photographs
Easily understood without confusing the subject or the reader.More than anything, as they say, every picture says a thousand words. This book almost needs no words as there are endless photographs each saying athousand words of their own.I knew nothing of the cicil war.I now knowmuch.A sad time but interesting subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellentcompact photographic history of the Civil War
As an earlier reviewer stated, the Civil War was the first major conflict extensively covered by photographers. This first volume, which actually covers the conflict from secession to the climax at Gettysburg containssome of the best photograpy culled from the files of Matthew Brady,Alexander Gardner, and others. While the photographs alone would be worththe price, it is the accompanying text, written in the main by William C.Davis(with James M. McPherson and Shelby Foote arguably our finest CivilWar historians) and Bell Wiley which captures the reader by tieing togetherthe imagery with the fact. A picture is worth a thousand words, and thepre-war photographs of a timid-looking James Buchanan or the lean, meanlook of the fireeating James Lane of Kansas are no exceptions. Or the deadConfederates laying near "Burnside's Bridge" following Antietam,or the bouyant beau sabeur Wade Hampton on one page and a youthful GeorgeCuster with his dog Rose on the next in the segment describing the cavalryfight at Gettysburg.

This compact work is thick, it is true, but a loteasier to carry along than the oversized volume. The only drawback to thisand the companion volume is the small print of the text and captions. Butthis volume and its companion are well worth a magnifying glass and shouldbe part of any Civil War buffs home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for any Civil War library or collection.
I received this (and volume II "Vicksburg to Appomattox") as a gift from my wife. The articles are incisive, exploring events both leading up to and the during the actual conflict regularly ignored by other works.Although a magnifying device may be required for the text by some readers, the compact size of the two volumes makes them ideal "traveling books."(Ever try packing an oversized book in your suitcase or carry-on bag?)

But the PICTURES!The Civil War was the first major conflict to be photographed, and the photographs are what make these volumes essential for any serious study of the Civil War.

Please beware . . . the photographs are haunting, and some are downright disturbing. But the Civil War was just that -- a WAR in which men died in battle (and some died horribly).Over 50,000 casualties were inflicted in one major battle alone, and the pictures sans text tell the compelling story of the four years that literally defined us as a nation (and continues to define our nation in its present course in history).

Whether as gifts for others or for yourself -- BUY THESE BOOKS! ... Read more
