2-0 out of 5 stars Anti-Climatic
Am I the only person here who didn't read this for school? Well anyway...

This book I found created way more intrigue at the very beginning than it actually had in it. Immediately I was curious about why Crabbe had gone missing, where he went, why he refused to tell anybody where he went, why he was missing fingers etc. Later on, I was very appreciative of his motive for leaving town and disappearing, as it seemed a very realistic reason someone his age would cook up, and I had a lot of sympathy for him (as I was about 14 when I read the book). It was, basically, intriguing. I was motivated to read on.

And then I find out that the reason behind his missing fingers, his scars, etc. and none of them were nearly as interesting as I'd hoped. A lot of it just seemed random and didn't really fit in with any kind of moral that the author was delivering, or really had any kind of deeper meaning or reasoning. I was unsatisfied.

Not only that, but the climax of the book just seemed like the author scrambling for something to happen. There was the death of a character that was totally unnecessary to the plot, and basically just there to draw sympathy for the characters. The death wasn't really speculated on afterward (that I can remember) and it didn't need to happen. Basically, this book could have been way better than it was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crabbe by William Bell
This is an excellent novel. It can help weak readers understand some more ways to understand novels and stroy lines. I highly advise it to stay in schools. It will help the students that are too lazy to go out to the country and explore how to survive and what possibilities can happen in nature. I also like how that the author made the chapters into journal entries.

3-0 out of 5 stars Umm...
Why is it that almost everyone had to read this book for school? Huh? I had to read it too and it was INCREDIBLY BORING. I did not enjoy this book AT ALL. It had a bad plot and alotta swearing(who doesn't swear tho...) But it was somewhat disturbing hearing my teacher swear when reading this book to us. ANYWAY in the beginning I actually had hope but... Something went wrong. Also we had tons of questions for each chapter(VERY annoying). So If you have a choice, I don't recommend you read this book. If you wanna know what it's about, It's about an 18 yr old guy named Crabbe, Franklin Crabbe. He's rich and has good grades but somethings missing. So he secretly and cleverly runs away from home. He almost kills himself falling down a waterfall and is saved by a girl named Mary. He stays with her and she teaches him some valuable things about survival and life... >^,,^<

3-0 out of 5 stars Alright
This novel was fairly decent:it had an alright plot, it was written somewhat well, and was interesting in most parts. I did not like this novel, however, because i had to read it as a school assignment. I think that because of that, it took all of the pleasure out of the novel, and i didn't have time to appreciate certain things about the novel.
I also did not like the ending of the novel. I felt that it didnt explain well enough what happened to Crabbe.
Overall, this book would definitally be more enjoyable if you were not pressed for time to read it, and then have to do a load of work on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book was awsom!
at first, i didnt wanna read this book at all. i was forced to by school. but as i got further and further i realized this book was ...amazing. i dont know wen ive read a better book. i think one of the reasons i enjoyed the book so much was that it reaally encourages u too become an individual person and not to live for anybody else, and i know realize that. i may still only be a lost and confused teenager, but thanks to this book i now know to only live for myself, and not to try to reach other peoples expectations but only my own. if u have any spare time at all read this book!!! its amazing, posibly even beyond amazing. i would have gave it more stars if it were posible. william bell did an outstanding job on this book. its ending was awsom, and kept me on my toes the whole time. the begining may not be very interesting, but as u get deeper and deeper into the book, it becomes better and better. the book was fenominal! READ IT! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful monograph
William Bell Riley (1861-1947) was an early fundamentalist minister and evangelist who in 1897 became pastor of the First Baptist Church of Minneapolis and from that pulpit launched both a briefly significant fundamentalist association and the much more influential Northwestern Bible and Missionary Training School (1902-1966).Bright, energetic, and combative, Riley spent a full life fighting alcohol, gambling, evolution, and religious liberalism without a hint of personal scandal.Nevertheless, he was also dogmatic, autocratic, and a persistent anti-Semite.

Trollinger's work is more monograph than biography, an attempt to explain how fundamentalism developed in the 1930s and `40s after its supposed post-Scopes demise rather than a study of personality. The writing, though unexciting, is careful and workmanlike. ... Read more

Product Description
The chronicle of the Bell family is one which will be familiar to thousands of other Canadians whose ancestors were part of a massive immigration from the British Isles to Ontario in the early 19th century.

Originally the Bells were one of the troublesome "riding clans" of the Scottish borders. (Another Bell group originated as an offshoot form Clan MacMillan in western Argyllshire) Many moved or were moved to Ireland in the early 17th century "Plantation" of Ulster, where their descendants remain to the present, as Ulster Scots. By the early 19th century severe economic depression, land pressures, and increased friction with the native Irish were widespread. It lead to a major emigration of Ulster Scots to North America, and particularly to Upper Canada. Their imprint on the character of Ontario persists to the present.

After describing the nature and character of the countryside and of the Bells generally in the Scottish Borders and in Ulster, the author follows his maternal ancestors as they experience the hardships of emigration in 1832 ("the cholera year") and deal with the demands of pioneering in a new country. Originally they settled just southwest of Peterborough, but subsequently were attracted northwards when the Haliburton Highlands were opened for settlement. There the Canadian Shield provided severely limited prospects for farming and the family relocated to north Simcoe County.

When the Canadian Northwest was opened for settlement in the late 19th century, several family members moved to what became today's Prairie Provinces. Those that remained in Ontario abandoned farming in the early 20th Century in favour of city life in a rapidly growing Toronto. Today's descendants are widely dispersed across central and western Canada and in the western United States.

The author draws on a wide spectrum of material - official records, contemporary newspapers and published accounts, family records, letters and interviews to provide a vivid backdrop for the lives of his Bell family over time. Material and information has been collected by him over twenty-five years, in Scotland, Ireland , Canada, and the Unites States. ... Read more
