Jahrhunderts vor allem im angelsächsischen Sprachraum viel Aufmerksamkeit und Zustimmung erfahren hat. Bis heute ist er dort - wenn auch in Form von zahlreichen Abwandlungen und Varianten - eine der wichtigsten und einflussreichsten philosophischen Strömungen.Aus utilitaristischer Perspektive ist diejenige Handlung gut und moralisch wertvoll, deren Konsequenzen das größte Glück für die größte Zahl der von ihr betroffenen Personen bedeuten („greatest happiness for the greatest number"). Die Attraktivität eines solchen Ansatzes, der ohne Metaphysik auszukommen scheint, liegt auf der Hand: Zum einen baut er auf einem Grundzug des Menschen auf, dem Streben nach Glück. Zum anderen wird Moral als vom Menschen und für den Menschen geschaffene Einrichtung begriffen, die durch die Bezugsgröße „Glück" rational kalkulierbar und empirisch messbar sein soll.Anhand der Arbeiten von Bentham und Mill wird die Konzeption des klassischen Utilitarismus vorgestellt und einer kritischen Würdigung unterzogen.
