Excerpt: The Secret World of Og is a children's novel written by Pierre Berton and illustrated by his daughter Patsy. It was first published in 1961 by McClelland and Stewart. This Canadian classic has sold more than 200,000 copies in four editions. Of his forty-seven books, this was Bertons personal favourite, partly because the characters were inspired by his own children. The Secret World of Og brought the author more fan mail than anything else he wrote at least a dozen letters a week from children across Canada. In this fantasy adventure, four children Penny, the leader; Pamela, her common-sense sister; Peter, whose lifes ambition is to become a garbageman; and Patsy, who collects frogs in her pockets set out in search of their baby brother, Paul, better known as The Pollywog, who has vanished mysteriously from their playhouse. Accompanied by their fearless pets, the children descend through a secret trapdoor into a strange underground world of mushrooms, whose green inhabitants know only one word: OG! The Secret World of Og served to inspire an animated action-adventure television series produced in 2006 and airing on CBC Television, Canada's national public broadcaster. An animated special based on the book, also called The Secret World of Og, was broadcast in the 1980s in America ABC Weekend Special during its 5th Season. The TV series extends the storyline of the original book, following the five Berton siblings as they descend through a hole in the floor of their playhouse to explore the underground world of Og. There, amid subterranean rivers, caverns ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5489505 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I have read this book so many times, I literally wore it out, and ordered another copy of it.I have a great interest in the Dionne Quintuplets, since I am related to them.It really told the story of how they fought for their lives, and how the fight to save them created a rift between the family and the medical team, and then in the family itself after they were reunited with them at nine years of age.A very tragic story.A great read for anyone who has an interest in these remarkable children who beat great odds and survived when no one thought they would.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books written about the Quints!
This one was one of the best books about the Dionne's. It wasn't at all one-sided like so many others. The pitures are excellent, and Mr. Burton's style is smooth and understandable. It allows you to form you own opinion and understand what really happpend, since it was such a complicated story, with alot of twist and turns. Enjoy! ... Read more

Product Description
On Easter Monday 1917 with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France seized and held the best defended German bastion on the Western Front - the muddy scarp of Vimy Ridge. The British had failed to take the ridge, and so had the French who had lost 150,000 men in the attempt. Yet these magnificent colonial troops did so in a morning at the cost of 10,000 casualties

The author recounts this remarkable feat of arm with bold pace and style. He has gathered many personal accounts from Soldiers who fought at Vimy. He describes the commanders and the men, the organization and the training, and above all notes the thorough preparation for the attack from which the British General Staff could have learned much. The action is placed within the context both of the Battle of Arras, of which this attack was part, and as a milestone in the development of Canada as a nation ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Vimy: a flawed but readable account of a defining moment in Canada's history
Of the numerous popular histories that Pierre Berton wrote, Vimy is is one of his more popular and enduring works. It deals with the assault on April 9-12, 1917 by the Canadian Corp against the German defenses along Vimy Ridge, an important area of high ground on an otherwise relatively flat expanse of land along the Western Front. Berton's account draws on numerous Canadian personal accounts and unit histories, piecing them together into a clear and highly readable reconstruction of the pre-attack build up, the course of battle for each of the four divisions of the Canadian Corp on April 9, as well as the follow up actions that lasted through to April 12.

While I admire the fact that this book has and will provide Canadians with an accessable account of this pivotal battle in the First World War, a battle which some have argued was a key event in Canada's development of a seperate national identity; Vimy is certainly not all that it could have been. Granted the book is meant to chronicle the Canadian side of the battle, but this does not mean that the disposition of the German units and the nature of the German defenses should be almost entirely ignored.

In one particular instance, when he does happen to mention German units that were thrown into the line to secure The Pimple, he writes: "the posponment of the battle had given the Germans time to bring up fresh troops, the elite Prussians of the 5th Guard--six footers all, who sneered at the Canadians as 'untrained Colonial levies'." Here are the problems with this statement:

1) The Prussian Guards that were brought up were in fact all ready being brought as the battle commenced.

2) The Prussian Guards were not "fresh troops," rather had been recently taken out of line after being in the line for much of 1916 and early 1917.

3) The units in question were in fact the Fusilier Battalion of the 5. Garde-Grenadier-Regiment and the 1st Battalion of the Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 93, which were both part of the 5. Garde-Infanterie-Brigade of the 4. Garde-Infanterie-Division.

4) I highly doubt by this time in--if ever during--the war the Prussian Guard units consisted of entirely of "six footers".

5) References to the effect that the Prussians "sneered" at the Canadians for being "levies" is really necessary here, because the post-war German accounts of the battle that I've read have indicated that the Canadians were regarded as nothing else but the elite of the British Army.

Unfortunately, it's inaccuracies like this that throw into doubt the overall reliability of Vimy as a historical source. Still, it does make for great reading, and hopefully will serve as a source of inspiration for future generations to learn more about Canada's important role in the First World War.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Battle of Vimy Ridge - 1917
Vimy - Pierre Berton

This book is a classic. It gives the reader a clear picture of what happened in 1917.The Canadian Corps changed history at Vimy Ridge.
Each and every Canadian will surely remember what happened on that horrible battlefield; to stop the carnage of the First World War.
The Canadians were brave fighters in the cause of world peace. The Generals believed the Ridge was impregnable, but they devised a strategy that made history. The rocket barrage of the artillery bombardment was an ingenious strategy. The official Canadian history says of the soldiers:
"They fought as Canadians and those who returned, brought back with them a pride of nationhood that they had not known before."
May the soul of every brave Canadian soldier be remembered forever.

1-0 out of 5 stars Vimy review
Vimy by Berton is a fabulous book on the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. Lots of fascinating, personal stories of the men who fought and died, and great insight to the suffering that they endured.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reads Like a Great Novel
Vimy is just one of several books written by the quintessential Canadian historian Pierre Berton. Along with these books, his columns, television series, and his permanent panellist status on Front Page Challenge have earned him a place in the Order of Canada, the Governor-General's award, several literary awards, and has made many Canadians interested in their country's history.

Now this isn't the first piece I've read by Mr. Berton. I've also thoroughly enjoyed many of his others, including The Invasion of Canada, Flames Across the Border, and Marching to War. It is however, my favourite one to date.

Vimy tells the stories of a number of the Canadian participants in the Great War. It follows them as they prepare for, then engage in, and come out victorious from the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a battle that has become a national symbol of pride for Canada.

After reading this book, it is easy to understand why Canada is so proud of its accomplishment during the First World War. A young nation, with little military experience and somewhat unruly soldiers, came in with fresh ideas and accomplished what the British, and the French, countries with centuries of military knowledge, could not.

This book reads more like a good novel than like a historical fact-sheet. At times it's hard to follow because of the number of people involved in the different stories, but otherwise, it's a literary masterpiece. The graphic imagery of the trenches and the battlefields paint a very vivid picture in one's imagination, and the feelings emoted by the characters become very real to the reader throughout the book.

This is a true testament to the resolve of the Canadian people, but it is also an eye-opening account of the horrors of war. It is important for Canadian to know what role we played on the world stage in the World War 1, and this is the perfect book to read to understand that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book about the Great war and Canada!
I have to give this book at very high 5 stars.Berton writes about the genesis of the Canadian military in great detail.I must admit to not knowing the rolling barrage and the trench raids were of Canadian origin. After the superb set up, the battle itself shows the infusion of all of these preparations in thier victory at Vimy. The story bring you to the GHQ's and the foot soldier level.. a Must Book! ... Product Description
The most photographed event in America during the 19th century.

More than 10,000 images reside in public archives and private collections, depicting every aspect of what popular historian Pierre Berton has called "one of the strangest mass movements in history." For this book, Berton selected 200 photographs, some iconic, some touchingly personal, and most previously unpublished.

The Klondike Quest brings to life the panoramic drama of the great stampede for gold as seen by the ordinary gold-seeker. The photographs are beautifully reproduced and informatively and colorfully captioned. "One million people, it is said, laid plans to go to the Klondike. One hundred thousand actually set off. And so the Klondike saga is a chronicle of humanity in the mass.... For the next eighteen months, the Yukon interior plateau became a human anthill." ... Read more

The photos are riveting - each photo is a story. I studied the details of each picture - the clothing, the tools, the lines in their faces - trying to imagine the life these people led.The narrative is excellent, just enough to set the scene for each photo without being wordy. The author is good at conveying the emotions felt by the fortune-seekers at the various stages of their journey. Those who are interested in people and in history will enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Klondike
History has never been so entertaining and enthralling. This is was such a unique time and yet I could see so much of today's headlines in my mind as I read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelieveable photos! A must buy for history lovers.
Berton, a well known writer of Canadian histories, has put together quite a collection of photographs in this glossy tome. If you are realy interested in the subject, I suggest Klondike Quest for the remarkablepictures, and "The Klondike Fever", also by Berton, for a writtenaccount. I can't praise the collection of photographs enough. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the more reliable Donnelly books
This is a good book to start with if you are interested in getting into the whole Donnelly thing. The Donnellys, for all of you not familiar with the story, were Irish immigrants who settled near Lucan, Ontario, which is situated near London, Ontario. On the night of February 3, 1880, after decades of feuding in the township, the Donnelly family was murdered by a vigilante group consisting of a number of locals.Ever since every aspect of the story has been mired in controversy and is still a hot-topic in that part of southern Ontario, so much so that a number of novels and dramas have been written about it. ... An accomplished storyteller, Berton was one of Canada's most prolific and popular authors. He wrote 50 books, including ones on popular culture, Canadian history, critiques of mainstream religion, anthologies, children's books and historical works for youth. He popularized Canadian history. He was born on July 12, 1920, in Whitehorse, Yukon, where his father had moved for the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. His family moved to Dawson City, Yukon in 1921, where they lived until moving to Victoria, British Columbia in 1932. His mother, Laura Beatrice Berton (née Thompson) was a school teacher in Toronto until she was offered a job as a teacher in Dawson City at the age of 29 in 1907. She met Frank Berton in the nearby mining town of Granville shortly after settling in Dawson and teaching kindergarten. Laura Beatrice Berton's autobiography of life in the Yukon entitled I Married the Klondike was published in her later years and gave her, what her son Pierre describes as 'a modicum of fame, which she thoroughly enjoyed.' Excerpt: Jack London (January 12, 1876 November 22, 1916) was an American author who wrote The Call of the Wild, White Fang, and The Sea Wolf along with many other popular books. A pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction, he was one of the first Americans to make a lucrative career exclusively from writing. Biographer Clarice Stasz and others believe that London's father was astrologer William Chaney. London's mother, Flora Wellman, a music teacher and spiritualist who claimed to channel the spirit of an Indian chief, became pregnant, presumably from her union with Chaney, with whom she lived in San Francisco. Whether Wellman and Chaney were legally married is unknown. Most San Francisco civil records were destroyed by the vast fires which followed the 1906 earthquake; it is not known with certainty what name appeared on his birth certificate. Stasz notes that in his memoirs Chaney refers to London's mother Flora Wellman as having been his "wife" and also cites an advertisement in which Flora calls herself "Florence Wellman Chaney". Laura Beatrice Berton's autobiography of life in the Yukon entitled I Married the Klondike was published in her later years and gave her, what her son Pierre describes as 'a modicum of fame, which she thoroughly enjoyed.' Like his father, Pierre Berton worked in Klondike mining camps during his years as a history major at the University of British Columbia, where he also worked on the student paper The Ubyssey. He spent his early newspaper career in Vancouver, where at 21 he was the youngest city editor on any Canadian daily, replacing editorial staff that had been called up during the Second World War.
