Product Description
Arthur Numan, winner of three League titles, four Scottish Cups and three League Cups during his time with Rangers, remains a well-loved figure with the fans and a prominent sports pundit on TV and radio. Now, Arthur takes us through his time at Ibrox, all the way from his GBP 4.5 million signing in 1998 to his surprise retirement in 2003. It's a fascinating insider's view that includes details of the final months of Dick Advocaat's controversial reign at the club - the financial turmoil and shocking atmosphere. And, for the first time, Arthur will confide exactly why he quit.Everything's covered, from Arthur's time growing up in Holland to the forty-five caps he earned for his international side - taking us behind the scenes to report on the bust-ups and the partying, as well as the football at the World Cup Finals in 1994 and 1998 and the European Championships in 1996 and 2000.And expect Arthur's honest and often controversial opinions of some of the biggest players (on and off the pitch) in the game, including Advocaat, Alex McLeish, David Murray, Martin O'Neill, Fernando Ricksen, Pierre van Hoojidonk, Ronaldo, Romario, Barry Ferguson, and exactly what Arthur thinks of the SFA.Full of revelations and utterly candid, this is an unmissable book for Rangers fans and all those who take their football seriously. ... This book is a bibliophile's dream! The life of Arthur A. 4-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Y'all
Did I enjoy reading this book? No! It actually brought me down emotional, and at times, lifted me spiritually. Is the book worth reading?Heck yeah!

This book is simply bittersweet for me.These Black men were responsible for opening the West for white settlement by the power structure at the time. However, these fantastic men were simply tools in aiding and subjugating and annihilating the indigenous people and stealing their land. They were the best and certainly deserved to be studied and remembered by the world, but especially, us - their children.Bittersweet....

My only complain about this book was Mr. Arthur's constant use of the word "hostiles" in describing the native people who had the audacity to fight for their land and way of life.I thought a Black man would know better. It's like being called savages. I got hostile a few times with him in my mind when he used the word "hostiles."Like I said y'all - bittersweet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good minority history from the days of the Old West

Black, Buckskin, And Blue: African American Scouts & Soldiers on the Western Frontier

By Art T. Burton

Art T. Burton's first book (still available) was Red Blackand Deadly: Black and Indian Gunfighters of the Indian Territory.Thatpopular western law enforcement history book came out in 1991. The author'snew book, Black Buckskin, and Blue, continues to concentrate on men ofcolor who helped settle America's western frontier. The book's centraltheme addresses African-American scouts and soldiers on the frontier duringthe nineteenth century much like he did with outlaws and lawmen of color inhis first book.

Although Oklahoma is not the exclusive setting for thebook, a great deal of the historical incidents contained in it did occur inOklahoma. For instance, Black, Buckskin, and Blue: African American Scoutsand Soldiers on the Western Frontier is thought to be the first book todiscuss the role of black soldiers stationed in Indian Territory and theirinvolvement in the Creek Nation tribal rebellion known as the Green PeachWar of 1882.

Divided into three sections, Burton's book begins with anumber of profiles of little known African-American frontier scouts. Amongthese is Frank Grouard, a black man who the author credits as being theperson most responsible for the death of Indian Chief Crazy Horse.

Afterprofiling these men along with a number offur trappers and guides, thesecond section of the book is devoted to the Civil War in the west. Black,Buckskin, and Blue is thought to be the first book to examine the role ofblack soldiers operating west of the Mississippi River during the CivilWar. These colored troops, as they were referred to at the time, played animportant role in federal victories within the Trans-Mississippi militarytheater during the War Between the States.

The book's third section dealswith the Buffalo Soldiers of our nation's military. Often times being theonly representatives of the federal government during the days of America'swestward expansion following the Civil War, which was especially true inIndian Territory, many of their actions related to law enforcement.According to the author, "The term 'Buffalo Soldiers' has become acatch phrase; anyone that knows anything about western history should knowsomething about (them)."

Surprisingly, some degree of Old West lawenforcement had a direct relationship with the history of the United Statesblack 9th and 10th Calvary regiments along with the African-American 24thand 25th Infantry. Art T. Burton has done a good job relating a number oflaw enforcement actions under taken by these military units. In it, herelates when and how the Buffalo Soldiers pursued outlaws as well ashostile Indians on the western frontier.

Henry B. Crawford, curator ofhistory at the Museum of Texas Tech University described the book, Black,Buckskin, & Blue by saying; "In the tradition of greatstorytelling historians of the frontier genre, Art Burton applies hisskills once again to destroy the artificial ethnic boundaries which stillpollute today's popular image of the historic western frontier..."

Formore on an overlooked chapter in western law enforcement and thecontributions of African-Americans in settling America's frontier, ArtBurton's new book is recommended reading. ... Read more
