Product Description

In his first collection of short stories since 2004's Standing on Richards, George Bowering, Canada's first Poet Laureate, reminds us why he is one of our country's most interesting writers. In a series of ten stories introduced by archival photographs, Bowering leads us through the glory days of 1960s Vancouver, when the Hotel Vancouver boasted an under-street level bar whose businessmen swooped in and out in trenchcoats; and a time when Japanese tourists with cameras were a novelty.

The Box breaks with the conventional genre of short stories, weaving together biography, autobiography, parable, and drama. Here is fourteen-year old Drew, transplanted from the coast to the Okanagan, and working at his first summer job packing prunes for the town MILF. Here, too, is the extraordinary tale of minor-league pitcher Bunny Watson who strings together an amazing twenty wins without a loss. Bowering trades witty barbs with the poet Phyllis Webb in the experimental story "Phyllis's Questions", while the title story "The Box" explores romantic and platonic relationships as the characters play with the art of opening a box. At times cerebral, The Box is always playful, clever and thoroughly entertaining.

Each of the ten stories in The Box have previously appeared, sometimes in different shapes, in the Vancouver Review, Matrix, dANDdelion, filling Station, Rampike, Open Letter, Prism International, The Capilano Review and on CBC Radio One's "Sounds Like Canada."

Product Description
Novel. This unique, collaborative book, "a novel of youth in 1961, as seen somewhat later" by its four authors, blurs the lines between fiction and facts, challenging both the boundaries of narrative and the rules of biography. The end-result is an exuberant, hilarious novel of an emergent generation of poets in 1960's Vancouver, often landing somewhere between minute detail and phobic incertitude: "M stood on the side of the Upper Levels Highway and tried with all his might to extricate an insect that had been carried in the wash of a passing Rolls Royce and plunged into M's ear. A passing motorist mistook his gestures for antic hitch-hiking, and yanked the family Turbocharger to a stop a hundred feet in front of the gnat-maddened man." PICCOLO MONDO incisively chronicles the coming of age of a generation, a city and a literary culture. ... Read more

Product Description
Walking out on a demoralizing second marriage, Maggie Lloyd leaves Vancouver to work at a fishing lodge in the interior of British Columbia. But the serenity of Maggie’s new surroundings is soon disturbed by the irrational jealousy of the lodge-keeper’s wife. Restoring her own broken spirit, Maggie must also become a healer to others. In this, she is supported by her eccentric friend, Nell Severance, whose pearl-handled revolver – the Swamp Angel – becomes Maggie’s ambiguous talisman and the novel’s symbolic core.

Ethel Wilson’s best-loved novel, Swamp Angel first appeared in 1954. It remains an astute and powerful study of one woman’s integrity and of the redemptive power of compassion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Flyfishing as Life
One of the most remarkable books I have ever read. It was recommended to me as a transplanted Maritimer, a fly fisher and fly tier, all of which the heroine also is. For a book of its era it is amazingly modern in many of its sentiments. Others reviews here have delved into the storyline and potential meanings of events; I simply encourage the reader to enjoy Wilson's lyrical descriptions of flyfishing the beautiful rivers of BC, such as the Similkameen, and the heroine's enjoyment of a life spent outdoors as part of nature.

3-0 out of 5 stars Human relationships and interactions
This book was originally published in 1954. It takes place in British Columbia Canada. The main character, Maggie, is living in Vancouver with her 2nd husband Eddie. She is unhappy in the marriage due to "humiliation and anger". She plans for some time to leave her husband and slowly packs away her clothing and other items and hides the bag. One night after dinner while doing dishes she simply walks out the kitchen door and to her new life. She travels to the country and gets a job at a fishing lodge at Three Loon Lake. But jealousy of the fishing lodge's owner threatens to disrupt her new life. Maggie remains in touch with her friend, Nell, in Vancouver. Nell has a sentimental attachment to an old revolver named "Swamp Angel" that she used in her former career as a juggler in a circus. The gun holds a different symbolic meaning for Nell and her daughter.

This book depicts the emotions of everyday people and shows how emotions can not only affect yourself but others around you. Overall the quality of the writing was very good. The book leaves alot of questions unanswered though. ... Read more

Product Description

25 years ago, the Montreal poetry scene experienced an unprecedented eruption of activity that resulted in collaborative poems, simultaneous readings, multimedia performances, videopoems, poetry on the city’s buses, English poetry programs on French CBC, concrete poems, a dozen issues of poetry magazines and more than a dozen books. This and more was the result of the individual and collective effort of Endre Farkas, Artie Gold, Tom Konyves, Claudia (Cel) Lapp, Stephen Morrissey, John McAuley and Ken Norris who became labelled the Vehicule Poets. The Vehicule Poets came together to form the most cohesive poetry movement in Canada since the TISH days of the early 1960s. Their work tended toward the fresh and the experimental as they shared a spirit of collectivity and collaboration. They were the leading proponents of literary community and poetic experimentation. One of the results of this collaborative work was the publication of The Vehicule Poets in 1979. To mark the twenty–fifth anniversary of this important book, The Muses’ Company is publishing The Vehicule Poets Now. This is not a nostalgic look back but a view of the present. The poems in this anthology reveal a still very vibrant and vital body of work. These poems continue to push boundaries and test limits.

Excerpt: Donald Grant Creighton, CC (July 15, 1902 December 19, 1979) was a noted Canadian historian. Born in Toronto, the son of Methodist minister, Creighton attended Victoria College, in the University of Toronto, where he received his BA in 1925. He then attended Balliol College at Oxford University, where he received his MA before returning to Canada to teach history, at the University of Toronto, where he remained for his career. Creighton belonged to a generation of English Canadians who were proud of the British Empire, and his anglophilia was often expressed in his books. In 1926, Creighton married Luella Bruce. He was the father of the fiction writer Cynthia Flood. Creighton died in his sleep on December 18, 1979, from cancer, in Brooklin, Ontario. He was 77. In 1967, Creighton was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. University of New Brunswick political science professor Donald A. Wright is writing a biography about Creighton. He was awarded the Order of British Columbia in 2004. He played various infield positions for the York Street Tigers (Montreal), the Granville Grange Zephers, the Zunks, and finally for the Paperbacks (Vancouver), from which he retired only a few years ago. When the Indian Hungryalist, also known as Hungry generation, poet Malay Roy Choudhury was arrested at Kolkata, India, Bowering had brought out a special issue of Imago for helping the Indian poet in his trial.
