3-0 out of 5 stars Either really good, or really bad
I bought this anthology as a fan of 3 of the authors already, so it's tough when some of the work just isn't that good. Most of the ideas in this have been done to death, so it just leaves the execution to make the stories stand out.Not all of them do.

The first story in the mix is "Getting Slayed" by Anya Bast.Jeweline is a spoiled princess stuck in a chastity belt until someone slays the dragon and wins her hand.Tired of being a virgin, she decides to take matters into her own hands and kill the dragon herself, only to discover he's really a gorgeous guy under a curse.Jeweline is far from saccharine and the set-up is fun and hot.Bast serves the story well, and this one is by far my favorite of the bunch.

Story #2 is Charlotte Boyett-Compo's "Sting of the Wind."I'll admit upfront I'm not a fan of this particular author.I've read other work by her and found it melodramatic and overwrought. This was just more of the same, about a woman who's the human assistant to a vampire and his do-gooding corporation. Not my style.

Lena Matthews' "Temperature Rising" is an interracial romance between Danner and his best friend's little sister. It's typical Matthews' style, with little actual plot but plenty of steamy action. It delivers exactly what it promises.

My surprise read of the bunch was "Virtuosity" by Kris Starr. This was one of the authors I'd never read before, and I was surprised to find a slightly melancholy story of loss as a widow struggles to move on from her husband's death. It's set in the future, and the widow in question is a skilled starship captain, but even as she begins to explore her options by trying out the pleasure programs on the Holosuite, there's a sense of universality about her characters emotions that makes it not only relatable but a poignant read.

The story that disappointed me the most was "Shadows Stir" by NJ Walters.I'm a huge fan of the author, but the more I read of her, the more I think I'm more a fan of her contemporary work than her paranormal. This is a story of love at first sight/know your true mate without any logical reason/save the future of a dying race through magic children kind of story. It's not my thing, and unfortunately, not even an author I love could sell it to me.

The anthology doesn't end well with Ravyn Wilde's "Passionflower."This scifi is about a woman who gets kidnapped by an alien for mating purposes, chosen *specifically* because she's plus-sized and can thus accommodate his larger size and greater strength.Turns out, he also has extra endowments, which push the story so far into the realm of the absurd that I can only laugh at any attempt to take this story seriously.Oh, and the alien's name is M'ike.Because, of course, an apostrophe automatically makes a name exotic.

Not a keeper for me, not even for the stories I did enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Cavemen books Ellora's Cave has come out with so far!
GETTING SLAYED by Anya Bast
Princess Jeweline is fed up with being a virgin and her chaffing chastity belt. The simple fact that she's still untouched is because of the fire breathing-dragon who's charbroiled all seven of her fiances.Obviously if she's ever going to have sex she'll have to take care of the dragon herself. What will Jeweline do when she actually meets up with the dragon and discovers he's not what he seems?Or when dragonslayers begin arriving hoping to win her hand in marriage by killing the dragon named Marcus?

Anya Bast does a fabulous job with this tale! You get a headstrong princess with a dragon that runs amok destroying any chance Jeweline has of ever having sex. This story is both comical and endearing.

STING OF THE WIND by Charlotte Boyett-Compo
Shannon O'Rourke is one of the privileged few humans to work among the supernatural beings at Durbin Enterprises. She takes great pride in the strides the company has made in medical research on blood diseases and the blood bank that aids both human and otherworldly creatures. As Shae Durbin's special personal assistant, she gets the benefit of his expertise and loving which he's perfected over the past five hundred years.

I've often jokingly said that hospitals and blood banks have vampires in the basement so I got a real kick out of this whole storyline.Charlotte Boyett-Compo has contributed a fun storyline with truly likeable characters.

TEMPERATURE RISING by Lena Matthews
Brenna Cole has had a huge crush on her brother's best friend and neighbor Danner Austin for as long as she can remember.Since her brother has asked her to house-sit, she fully intends to seize the opportunity to show him just how much she's grown up.She doesn't count on the extreme heat wave or rolling blackouts.Things are definitely going to heat up when the electricity goes out.

I've always loved Lena Matthews gutsy take-charge characters and homey realistic situations. This is a very fun story to visualize especially when Brenna's brother returns home earlier than expected.

VIRTUOSITY by Kris Starr
Commander Dillon Walker has spent the past three years reeling from the wrongful death of her husband during a mission to an alien planet. After visiting with some of her fellow crew members and hearing of their experiences in the HoloSuite, Dillon figures a virtual lover, Aiden, would satisfy her physical needs without risking her heart.Or could Aiden be more real than she thought?

I found Kris Starr's VIRTUOSITY to be poignantly heart touching. If you've ever suffered the loss of a loved one then you'd know just how hard it is to go on with life and I admire Dillon for her courage even if it is only with a virtual lover.

SHADOWS STIR by N.J. Walters
The fate of the Warriors of the Shadow Realm lies in the hands of a mortal woman. The Shadow Lord will do whatever he has to in order to save his kind and so he sends one of his Ryders, Gideon, to protect her.Jo Harris is determined to find her sister and in doing so is putting herself in danger.Gideon and Jo's attraction is too strong to deny but will they be able to save themselves from the shadows?

N.J. Walters brings this tale into the light beautifully! Right from the beginning I was drawn into the storyline and didn't want it to end.I am fascinated by the Warriors of the Shadow Realm and their plight and would love to see more books about them in the future.

PASSIONFLOWER by Ravyn Wilde
Nancy only wants to bring a little social interaction into her lonely life. The last thing she expects is a gorgeous foreign man who seems to be having a bit of trouble with the English language to take an interest in her or the extreme desire she feels for him.It couldn't be because of the Passionflower wine that he's shared with her, could it?The whole experience is just out of this world - literally.

Ravyn Wilde's PASSIONFLOWER is an awesome tale that will quickly capture and hold readers' interest. This is a fun intergalactic romp full of unexpected events, humorous conversation, and a far off planet.I'm intrigued by M'ike's home planet and would love to read more about it in future books.

The Cavemen are back and better then ever in this newest anthology, ELLORA'S CAVEMEN: DREAMS OF THE OASIS IV.As always, there are multiple genres represented so that readers can experience old favorites and try out something new as well. As a longtime reader of the Cavemen books I am extremely impressed with this one. There isn't a single story in this book that I didn't absolutely love and in several cases I even visited the author's web sites to find out if there would be other books involving characters or themes that I'd like to read more about.Congratulations to all of the authors! You truly outdid yourselves on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars strong erotic dark romantic fantasy
As children siblings Weir and Genevieve Saur watch, the Tribunal steals their family estate leaving them with not even time to mourn the death of their father.Thirsting for revenge, the pair manages to survive; eventually they become pirates plundering the coast of Serenia.

Sailing the Wind Lass, the Saurs and their crew come across a "ghost" ship, a prison vessel with two near dead survivors, a crew member and a prisoner, trapped in the hull. The convict is Syn-Jern Sorn, son of the Duke of Winterstorm, who Weir holds culpable for his father's death.Weir wants Syn-Jern dead while Genny feels he should not be faulted for the sins of the father. She prevails and as he heals, they learn that his step-brother Trace Edward Sorn betrayed him.As the Weirs decide whether to abet Syn-Jern on his quest to devastate the Tribunal, he hides his power that if used could kill many including innocent people even as he and Genny begin to fall in love.

The second novel in the WindTales miniseries trilogy is a strong erotic dark romantic fantasy that can be enjoyed as a stand alone but is enhanced by insider references to other Wind stories especially WINDFALL.The story line is action-packed, yet as expected by Charlotte Boyett-Compo, the key cast members are fully developed and not just the lead couple and her brother; for instance others like the Saurs' piracy partner Patrick embellish the plot as the audience cares for them.A final twist will stun fans as this fabulous author shakes her readers from complacency as few if any authors in continuing series ever do.Encore kudos to a terrific writer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Syn-Jern Sorn is a man that has been through more suffering in his lifetime than any man should ever have to go through. But regardless of this, there is something deep within Syn-Jern that keeps him going, driving him, and not letting him give up, no matter how much he wants to. He has been stripped of his title, shunned by all that knew him, killed in self-defense, framed for a murder he didn't commit, and sent to a place that death would be have been preferable: The Labyrinth. This is a prison from which no man returns in his right mind, if he returns at all.

When the end of Syn-Jern's 10-year sentence at The Labyrinth comes and goes without his release, he knows he's never meant to leave there alive and somehow manages to escape. This leads him on a perilous journey in which he endures even more pain and anguish, almost losing his life on more than one occasion, but he also manages to find joy and happiness. On his quest to reclaim what is rightfully his, he makes a few friends and finds his destiny. But will he live long enough to fulfill this destiny?

***** Outstanding, A definite must read! This book doesn't just draw you into it, it makes you feel like you are there and a part of the events as they unfold. WINDCHANCE is one book that you definitely don't want to miss. *****

5-0 out of 5 stars second novel in The WindTales Trilogy!!
A storm tossed sea leads the Windlass's crew into a fantastic adventure. The saucy Geneveve Saur (Genny), her brother Weir, and her brother's pirating partner Patrick Kasella, along with crew, stumble upon a ghost ship. Plundered by pirates and left because she wasn't seaworthy, they explore the dredge, and are amazed to find two men locked behind a hidden bulkhead panel.

The last crewmember of the ill-fated ship has saved the life of a convict, but in their hiding, they have became trapped. The convict is filthy, starved and dying of Labyrinth fever. Having served his ten-year sentence for killing a man, a crime of which he is was innocent, Syn-Jern Sorn had escaped the hell-hole two years after his sentence should have ended. But Syn-Jern is no ordinary prisoner. The son of a Duke, the victim of cruelty and injustice, his incredible spirit continues to display itself throughout the novel.

If you love tales of intrigue, magic and mystery, I highly recommend this novel. For those already familiar with Charlee Boyett-Compo work, you'll enjoy the allusions to her other novels. All readers will find themselves enthralled by this gripping tale. As with many of her works, keep a box of tissues handy, for the ending will leave you shocked, tearful, and amazed by the beauty of the tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Windchance
The world changed irrevocably the day that Captain Weir Saur and his sister Genevieve boarded the derelict ship.Neither they, nor their pirate crew, realised that their find would have such far-reachingconsequences.

Searching the deserted vessel, they discovered that it wasa prison ship on it's way to Ghurn Colony - home of the Labyrinth - thecruelest penal colony ever devised.Just as they were leaving the cursedship to its ghosts, they heard thumping from the hold.Perhaps it wasn'tdeserted after all, either that, or the superstitious First Mate was rightand they were about to be eaten by NightWinds.

Searching the hold, theywere nearly overcome by the most disgusting stench - gagging, GenevieveSaur (Genny) discovers a hidden door in the bulkhead. When they finallypry it open, they are horrified to find two men crammed into the spacebeyond.

Their horror soon turns to pity when they find that one of themen is close to death, having been inhumanely abused.Evidence of brutallashings, malnutrition and exposure were just some of hissymptoms.

Nursing the sick man they discover the Serenian Penal ColonyIdentification Mark tattooed on his wrist - this man had escaped from theMaze, and the prison transport was obviously taking him back to theLabrinth - taking him back to die.

This immediately garned theirsympathy, as the Captain's best friend, Patrick Kasella was similarlymarked. Both had endured the Tribunal's punishment, and both had escaped. There was no way they would let the foul Dominion's priests lay hands onthis man again.

The crewman rescued with the prisoner was in much bettershape and was able to tell the Windlass' crew the horrors the sick man hadendured.Crucifixion, whipping and keel-hauling were just some of thepunishments he had survived.

Patrick, Genny, and Weir were devotednurses, until they learned the prisoner's identity...

He was the son oftheir most despised enemy! His father, Duke Giles Sorn, had turned theirfather into the Tribunal and taken their lands.Sending Genny to be raisedin the hell-hole Galrath nunnery and Weir to the orphanage in Fealst. Separated for nearly twenty years the siblings had only just found eachother two years ago, and were united in their love for each other, andtheir burning desire for vengeance against the man who had ruined theirlives.

Patrick had a hard time convincing the pair to let the patientlive, but their innate good natures also fought their vengeful desires. Watching Syn-Jern Sorn overcome his injuries and battle to get back intoshape earned him Weir's grudging respect - even if Genny's heart washarder.

Returning to the Privateer Brotherhood at Montyne Cay, Syn-JernSorn's courage, determination and bravery softens even the hardest heart -until he is considered one of them.Pirate loyalty is a tremendous forceand when Syn-Jern is recaptured, the Privateer Brotherhood is not justgoing to stand by and see him taken. Even unforgiving Genny won't object,as he was captured trying to protect her!

So starts an intricate tale ofhonour, heroism and friendship that will change the lives of many, as"honourless cuthroats" attempt to overthrow an evil Tribunal thathas enslaved the populace for generations.

A gripping saga that has noequal.Charlotte Boyett-Compo does not spare her heroes, so a happy endingis never assured.

Thank goodness there are so many more books in theWindLegend Saga, I for one want to read them all!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite of Charlotte Boyett-Compo's books
Syn-Jern Sorn is a wonderful hero. He's been through so much but he's still capable loving Genny Sarn with his whole being. He still has to go back to where he came from to right some wrongs though.I was pulling forSyn the whole book. This was most definitely a page turner! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WyndSheer
Lycant Jamie MacGivern is hunting when he hears the sound of a plane crashing in the mountains where he lives. He finds a man and woman amongst the rubble of the broken plane. They are handcuffed together but the man has died. Jamie takes the woman back to his cabin and decides that she is now his. He cares for her, makes loves to her, and keeps her drugged while he waits for the rescuers to give up their search for her.

Federal Agent Allison Groves awakens with no memory, naked, and in the bed of a very handsome man. Jamie tells Allison that she is his wife and Allison eagerly accepts it. However, their happiness is short lived. Allison's rescuers include her ex-lover and he is determined to find her. He'll stop at nothing to get her back, including turning to the doctor who experimented and tortured Jamie at the re-conditioning camps where all Lycants were once held. Jamie will need the help of the Ad Fear Liath Mor - the Guardian of the mountain to save himself and his mate.

Wyndsheer is a romantic, science fiction novel full of suspense. The Ad Fear Liath Mor is a very interesting creature with amazing abilities. Jamie is a warrior with both physical and emotional scars and Allison is a sweet siren. She is very accepting of her situation which makes things both a bit unrealistic and very erotic.I enjoyed the interaction between Jamie and Allison in Wyndsheer, and the sci-fi edge kept things interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good romantic fantasy
Jamie is a reluctant mountain man (and part-time wolf) with a painful past whose loneliness is relieved when he comes upon a plane crash. He nurses back to health the lone survivor - a woman with amnesia. They fall in love with each other at first sight in his hidden cabin until the unscrupulous people they are each trying to avoid come looking for them.Their love survives with the help of a mysterious being who lives in the mountains.

Jamie is an idealized version of Wolverine from "The X-Men" - gentle, handsome, capable and heroic. The woman whom he names Mairi is a beautiful and devoted partner to him.

This book is best enjoyed not thinking about the usual societal norms and just letting yourself get swept up in the story's romantic fantasy.I found the characters emotionally compelling and I enjoyed this read very much. ... Read more

Dr. Caitlin provides medical help to the ailing alien.Another ship arrives demanding that they hand over their patient Khierson Cree. However, Khierson decides he wants Caitlin as his mate. His crew takes control of her ship as he begins a campaign to breech her defenses.

Khierson's bloodsire Kameron Cree lives on earth with a Terran mate Bridget. They constantly argue Cam refuses to hold their infant.Kam hides from the Multitude, the women that just tried killing his "blood" son.The Multitude abducts Kam with Bridget wondering what she can do to save her beloved.

"Talespinner" Charlotte Boyett-Compo deftly uses horror figures and places them in outer space so that readers obtain a supernatural space opera that works on several levels. The two major story lines compete for supremacy, but neither succeeds so that the audience is a bit confused until Ms. Boyett-Compo brings the duo plots into one theme. The characters feel genuine whether he or she is a creature of the night or full moon, an earthling, or a distaff Multitude member.Fans who want to try something a bit different should read this space adventure with horror elements as well as the first book in the WindDemon trilogy, BLOODWIND as well as other "Wind" novels.

Taken by the Wind is only a novella but wow, does it pack a punch!! Brenna Collins is in the wrong place at the wrong time. She witnesses a murder. A brutal serial killer has been running loose. Dubbed the Gemini Killer, he has been murdering pairs of twins. The killer becomes fixated on her - she has made an impression on him, especially by fighting back, since most of his victims rarely put up a struggle. The killer pursues her across several states and over time. Kylan Cree, a cop, is one of many who are trying to catch him. He and Brenna become close, but details of his past slowly come to the forefront. I can't add more or else I would be giving the entire story away. But there is a twist at the end that had me shaking my head!!

The characters were well developed for such a short story. Brenna is the kind of heroine I love - strong, smart and brave. The author has come up with a riveting story. I look forward to reading her next book! ... Read more
