5-0 out of 5 stars Jeremy McBright Was Afraid of the Night
My grandchildren LOVE this book!!!! All 13 of them...ages 2 to 12. It is written in rhyme...which children love and is fun to read and to hear. The book deals with the issue of being afraid at night of common things with which most children can relate. The pictures are engaging...I like that the father takes the lead in helping his son overcome his fears...and that the father is so gentle and engaging about doing so. I also like the simple logic used to explain that nighttime is really as exciting and essential as daytime. The adults in my family really like the book, too! I am very happy we discovered it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story
This is a lovely story to help children see the value of the nighttime. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is sure to help little ones be less afraid of the night.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great new book
I absolutely love this book! What a witty way to help kids love the dark, to teach them a lesson not to be afraid. My nephew and his class loved the book, same with is his teacher they all went and bought a copy, and the teacher did as well to keep in her classroom. What a talented author to write and illustrate a whole book! Can not wait for the next book, they will be thenew great books children will love and especially parents! ... Read more

Product Description
The wealthy industrialist Samuel Courtauld almost single handedly introduced French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art to England-both through his own collections and through the fund he gave to the British government to purchase this art for the national galleries in London. This beautiful book reproduces these famous paintings and tells the story of Courtauld`s collecting and patronage. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Portrait of an Able, but Flawed General
Sir Henry Clinton was one of the main players of the Rev War drama. That there is just this older bio on him seems surprising.Next to Washy, Sir Henry served the longest of many involved on both sides. This bio paints a convincing, if somewhat labored portrait of his pyschological short-comings and how these might well have affected his generalship. That he was a troubled individual we can easily understand.Though inspired at times with notable strategic and tactical insight, Sir Henry's difficult personality prevented him from working effectively with many piers. The author attributes this personality defect to the general's upbringing.Too much female company and not enough strong fatherly advice! We must see that this book was written during a time of great Freudian influence in understanding of pyschological issues. The reader must decide based on the info. provided by the author if this is valid or not.

Even without this issue, the book provides a major analysis of British strategy during the Rev War.For this alone I find the book worthwhile.Sir Henry was in on many of the key decisions made, (or not) during a significant part. His imput contributed in no small way to the final result. The reader will find a fascinating look at how the British restricted their abilities in many aspects. In a sense the various generals were each independent agents. Each could correspond on his own to Horse Guards in confidence. The Foreign Secretary in London, Lord Germain was often too willing to play each general or admiral off against the other. This often had devastating results for British strategy.Sir Henry played his part in these issues as well.Rivilries real and imagined with Cornwallis, Arbuthnoit and others certainly contributed to Albion's downfall.

Yet, Clinton could be inspired in his generalship.Had his advice been followed to the full at Long Island Washy and the Rev War might have been crushed in 1776.Even his reargard action at Monmouth was immportant as he managed a difficult retreat without losing any baggage. His attack on the Hudson Highlands in 1777 was nothing short of brilliant. These moments of inspiration were not enough to sustain his other short-comings as a general however.

This is a slow, but often brilliant work that sheds important perspective on the British strategy during the Rev War and paints an important poretrait of one of the key players involved.Until a newer bio comes out this should remain one of the best out here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Biography
"Portrait of a General" is an excellent look at the strange life and military career of Sir Henry Clinton, the longest tenured British commander during the War for American Independence. William Wilcox offers a fascinating account of how the British bungled the war and how the personalities of both political and military leaders came into play. Wilcox also presents a solid narrative of the war from the British side. He also details Clinton's personal life and presents it in a sympathetic light with charming accounts of Sir Henry handling his daughter's elopement with grace, his grief over the death of his wife and how his friends tried to cheer him up and his love of nature. But Wilcox also shows how Clinton was stubborn, vain, argumentative and hesitating. Wilcox shows how Clinton's feuding with Howe, Parker, Cornwallis, almost every British admiral of the war (save Rodney who played Clinton like a fiddle) undermined the war effort. Wilcox is a bit heavy handed with a psychoanalysis and seems to point too much blame on Clinton's childhood in New York and his diffident father but there simply is not enough evidence to make such claims convincing. Clinton was certainly an intelligent tactician and he never would have lost armies like Burgoyne and Cornwallis. Nor was he as lazy or as torn as Howe. Clinton was an excellent planner and showed all the signs of an able staff officer. But as a field general and as commander of all British operations between Florida and Boston, he was next to useless since he was unwilling to leave anything to chance. American Civil War buffs might recognize shades of Henry Halleck in Clinton. Wilcox uses Clinton's papers and letters to present an unforgettable portrait of a forgotten man, a man of great intelligence and ability who undermined himself with his character and personality. This is easily one of the best biographies I have come across in my two decades of reading them. ... Read more

This book was written for a course that was designed collaboratively with the Veterinary Medical Technicians Program instructors and the Mathematics and Science Department at Central Carolina Community College. The course is designed specifically to prepare students with the fundamentals of mathematics used on the state and national certification board exams and the concepts needed for computations in chemistry and veterinary clinical practice classes. This is an invaluable reference to all the characters who appear in English drama from 1500, when drama first appeared in print, to 1660. The book indexes well over a thousand printed plays. In addition to characters' names it indexes character types (Dwarf, Gypsy), nationalities, military ranks, psychological states (Jealousy, Melancholy), occupations and professions. 5-0 out of 5 stars From back cover~
The charge that powerful Americans used James Earl Ray to murder Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has been made ever since the tragedy in Memphis in 1968.The charge was made even after Ray in pleading guilty named no accomplice, and after publication in 1969 of William Bradford Huie's authoritative book He Slew the Dreamer.

Previously these accusations have been dismissed as harmless pandering by publicity seekers who had no knowledge of the case. But in 1977, certain members of Congress began saying that it was the FBI which aided and abetted Ray in the murder.

Such a charge made by congressmen cannot be dismissed as harmless. It must be answered before it damages the nation.William Bradford Huie is a responsible journalist and careful researcher who loves the truth and hates hypocrisy. To answer more recent charges Mr. Huie has prepared this new edition of He Slew the Dreamer with a convincing new Introduction and a startling Epilogue.Huie's book is valuable not only because he talked to James Earl Ray first, but because Huie has tirelessly verified what Ray did and said.William Bradford Huie, friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during his lifetime, says in his new introduction: "The revelations (in this book), though startlingly cruel, are hard to bear by the relatives and disciples of the black Baptist preacher who led the movement for racial change in America. These citizens have cause to feel resentful and hurt. But they do not have cause to charge government complicity in (King's) murder."

WILLIAM BRADFORD HUIE is considered one of the great reporters of our time, and one of the best-known and most successful of contemporary American authors. He is particularly known for his success in tracing sensational stories to their sources.Previous books which ave sold in the millions include The Revolt of Mamie Stover, The Americanization of Emily, Three Lives for Mississippi, The Klansman; and the Execution of Private Slovik.Huie's most recent book is A New Life to Live: The Story of Jimmy Putman, also published by Nelson. ...
