5-0 out of 5 stars America's first woman poet
Anne Bradstreet arrived in Massachusetts in 1630 most of the poems are of a religious nature but also about her family and life settling in a wilderness also amazingly she also in a very low key manner expressed women's liberation view points, she lived a hard life writing poetry while raising 8 children and going through a fire with total destruction of her house and a couple of moves that couldn't have been easy with all those children and in that time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography
Piercy's book does an excellent job describing the life of Anne Bradstreet in terms of her poetry and prose. The book defines the Puritan religion and relates how Bradstreet does and does not fit this philosophy. The book is biographical in that it is a fact by fact accounting of Bradstreet's life. However, it does an excellent job incorporating Bradstreet's actual poetry and prose into the book. If you are doing research on Bradstreet, I highly recommend this book. If you are looking to learn more about America's first female poet, I recommend reading Bradstreet's complete works first then get Piercy's book - it will help put everything into context. ... Product Description
Exploring the connections between nature and culture, this volume discusses the works of three female American poets: Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672), Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979), and Amy Clampitt (1920-1994).

Though only Bradstreet was born outside North America, each poet is shown to grapple with the ways that European civilization was transformed on the new continent. The author's analysis highlights the interconnected themes of travel, geography, cartography and wildness. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For the Sentimentalists
I bought this Dover Thrift knowing that I would at least like a few of the poems, and even one great poem would be worth a measly dollar. These are poems that speak of the greatness of America, or the treachery of slavery, or other such things that bring tears to your eyes if you don't fall asleep before its over. Now don't get me wrong, every poem in this book marks a great step for women in poetry, and all of the poems are good. For those who like surrealism and dreamlike imagerythough (like me), this book is more worth buying for the poems such as:"Daddy" (S. Plath's jerking rendering of the thoughts of a half-Jew, half-German woman), "Bluebeard's Closet" (R. Cooke's portrayal of the horrors of the room filled with dead wives), and a few other such of the like. The title, "Great Poems by American Women" should read "Great First Poems by American Women".The great poems of more recent poets were awfully ignored in the making of this mediorce (but hey, not a bad trade for the price) anthology. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Life that Counts
I doubt Anne Bradstreet would ring a bell with many Americans, but it should, and Faith Cook shows us why.First, she shows us Bradstreet.Though devoted to what some would consider the mundane tasks of raising a family, Bradstreet lived a life that counted. She was a courageous woman who poured out her life for her faith, her freedom, and her family. An understanding of beauty and divine purpose filled her heart, and Bradstreet let it loose in poetry so engaging that it found popularity in England despite being authored by a woman.

Second, she shows us colonial America, not through the eyes of explorers or royalty or only in reference to conflicts and political maneuvers, but through the eyes of a Puritan pilgrim.

Third, she shows us poetry.Though the book is mainly biography, excerpts of Bradstreet's sonorous poetry are weaved throughout and will leave you hungry for more.

So, I recommend it.It's a short read, and one that culminates in the humble glory of a mother's life well lived.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Biography
If you're interested in the story of the early Puritans coming to America for religious freedom, you'll certainly enjoy this book.Anne Bradstreet (d. 1672) was on a ship in one of the first Puritan contingents who came to America around 1630.This book is her amazing story told by biographer Faith Cook.

Anne Bradstreet faced difficulties that most Christians today can scarcely imagine. She had to adjust to difficult pioneer living in the "New World" and she faced frequent bouts of illness and loneliness, as well as periods of dark depression. She was constantly surrounded by death and learned about the terrors of death at a young age.The politics of the day were in turmoil (her husband was a politician of sorts) and the religious atmosphere was less than stable in the "New World."It wasn't an easy time to be a Christian!Furthermore, Bradstreet loved to write deeply Christian poetry and had to deal with the attitude of the day that women should not do such things.

The book is well written and not overly long or cumbersome (just under 200 pages). Many of Bradstreet's poems (or parts of them) are woven into the story in an edifying manner.Faith Cook is an excellent biographer and compelling writer.I'm confident many Christians of different backgrounds will be able to benefit from this book if they enjoy this part of the history of Christianity.I'd especially recommend this book for mothers, wives, and women's book clubs.
