5-0 out of 5 stars A sweet little book
I purchased this book because of the illustrations.Mary pays so much attention to detail, it's amazing, and in this book (with a happy ending, as opposed to the Bros Grimm) there is a Bernese Mountain dog pulling a cart, as is traditional in their native Switzerland, in the midst of the merry chase. This is indeed a charming little book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids love it!
I read this book every year to my Kindergarten class. They love it!

It is a beautifully written and illustrated story of the Gingerbread man, with a different outcome!

The dual story, which can be seen in Jan Brett's small pictures around the main ones, always fascinate my higher-thinking students while the main story captures the whole class.

A very warm and cozy story that will leave you feeling the same way.Awesome version of an old classic!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Condensed!
I purchased the board book edition of this delightful story for my littlest readers and only later had occasion to hear the whole story at a library story hour.I had noticed that my edition was unusually choppy for this author and seemed to be missing vital chunks of plot. How disappointing!Gingerbread Baby is a wonderful story, but please buy the paperback or hardcover editions instead.Otherwise, you and your child will miss out on a great thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Story, Beautiful illustrations
Jan Brett does a great job with every book she does.I was very excited when she did the Gingerbread baby story.I knew the illustrations would be exceptional and they are.Her books can almost be enjoy by pictures alone.I bought this book years ago for my children.I bought this one for a friend's daughter for Christmas and included a TY Gingerbread Baby. She is 3 and her mother said she just loved it.I think I started a new tradition at someone else's house every Christmas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Story is Retold With a Fun, New Ending and Beautiful Pictures
Matti waits for gingerbread to be made while he thumbs through a cookbook. A gingerbread baby, much like the classic childhood tale, pops out the oven, and scampers across the room. Household havoc soon follows as Matti's family tries to catch the escaped snack.

The gingerbread baby leads everyone outside and down the road, creating a mess along the way. The entire town is up in arms, tempted by the gingerbread baby's poetic taunts:

"I'm the Gingerbread Baby.
Catch me if you can!"

How will the gingerbread baby be caught? Can Matti save the day?

Beautiful colored drawings fill each page, with many two-page spreads. There is winter atmosphere, from the fire-filled hearth, to snow flowing over mountaintops, to the sugar-crusted gingerbread house. Creative and active, the pictures meet well with the story.

The pictures sometimes overtake the type. Although set in Breughel (like Times New Roman) in what appears to be 14 pt., the contrast is occasional weak, making the story difficult to read in a few places.

I fully recommend "Gingerbread Baby" by Jan Brett. It is one of the good ones.

Product Description
Mei Mei has the six happiest hens in China. She gives them treats and fresh hay baths, and when she calls to them-gu gu gu gu gu!-they all run to her as fast as they can. But one of the hens, Daisy, is not always so happy. The other hens pick on Daisy and push her off the perch every night, knowing that she is too small to stand up to them. Then one day Daisy accidentally drifts out onto the river in a basket and must quickly learn how to survive. When Daisy finds her way home, this plucky little hen is no longer afraid.
Jan Brett and her husband, Joe, traveled with their daughter-in-law, Yun, and her husband, Sean, to China, the land where Yun was born. During this trip, Jan found the inspiration for Daisy's story.Amazon.com Review
Picked on, pecked, and jostled, Daisy the hen is not quite as happy as her Happy Hens market basket might suggest. One evening, fed up with the other pushy hens, Daisy crawls into one of the baskets by the river, and falls asleep. Unaware of the rising river, this put-upon bird winds up floating downstream, past marauding monkeys, snorting water buffalo, and a greedy fisherman. Will Daisy ever make her way back to the home of the little girl Mei Mei and the six happiest hens in all of China? Breaking away from her usual Scandinavian illustrations and stories, Jan Brett embraces the beauty of China in this Story About Ping-inspired picture book. Bamboo poles frame the lavish illustrations of picturesque villages, strangely shaped mountains (Brett incorporates images of the animals into the ranges), and river-life characters. As in The Hat and her many other tales, Brett advances the plot with miniature border details. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely little story
My kids, 4 and 6, both enjoy this story. Illustrations are wonderful, text is descriptive and best of all it has a very happy ending :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Jan Brett 'winner'
Daisy is a delightful read for young children with a very subtle message to take very good care of your pets - something that all children can understand and apply to their own animals. My 6 year old granddaughter loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Hen Story
This is a classic journey adventure story where Daisy the hen accidentally (on purpose?) leaves home. Daisy learns how to defend herself out in the wild and uses those lessons to her advantage when she returns. Readers will root for the underdog, when all the other hens gang up on to pick upon Daisy, not allowing her to sleep with any kind of comfort. As anyone who has raised hens will know, this is another realistic touch.

Jan Brett altered the look of her traditionally busy borders that often tell a counterpoint to the main story. Here she uses two diagonal corner posts to frame the action of the main story. Each is beautifully detailed with designs based on Chinese weaving or pottery.
Mei-mei, the little girl, is a mother figure to her hens and the story has a very nice conversational tone. One of the most charming features of this book is that even though Daisy the hen may be anthropomorphic in her behavior and feelings, visually she keeps her hen-like qualities throughout. Daisy's face and body posture convey so much feeling, without ever seeming to step away from how a real hen would carry herself.

The watercolor and gouache paintings render incredibly rich colors and Brett provides a high level of detail. Alert readers will notice the animals from the signs of the Chinese Zodiac hidden amongst the green plateau-like hills in the background. This volume will be a welcome addition to the pantheon of books involving how to deal with school bullies. Brett certainly seems to owe a debt to The Story About Ping by Marjorie Flack, but I saw a strong similarity to The Cow Who Fell in the Canal by Phyllis Krasilovsky as well. All the little details included in the illustrations make this a good choice for sharing one-on-one with a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Affectionately told--and exciting!
Don't miss this one!We love this story, beautiful China setting.Told with the little girl's love for her chicken...the little girl outsmarts the greedy guy, using his own words to tell him a thing or two, and the bully-chickens get their come-uppance.All is so right with the world, now I can sleep.I was so surprised to stumble on to this great tale. With similarities to the Story of Ping, this offered so much more (and minus the old-fashioned spank, for those that have read Ping). Had only read one other Brett story, and this one has piqued our interest in other Brett tales, and her website too.

I do think all kids will love this, but particularly special to us as our two girls are adopted from China.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with Jan Brett
When it comes to beautifully illustrated children's books with a cultural twist, Jan Brett is the first author/illustrator that comes to mind.I have many of Brett's books that all three of my children have cherished over the last several years. I live overseas in Norway and many of Brett's books have a very Scandanavian feel to them. This one, however, is set in China.I have an adopted Chinese daughter and she was thrilled to look at the very detailed illustrations on each and every page of this darling story. The story is one of learning to stand up for yourself in order to be considered an equal amongst your peers. My daughter has me read this story to her almost every night. This is one of those books (along with all my other Jan Brett books) that I will be saving to share with my grandkids someday! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This book is a well written, educational and the illustrations make it very enjoyable for any child to want to read. It is a cute story about an armadillo that will be enjoyed by readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars .
This is a really great book. I love the rhythm, and the language choices, and I love Bo's adventurous attitude!

As always with Brett, be sure to check out the signature pictures on the sides of the pages that show what Bo's mama is doing as he has fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all
The Western flavor (hot peppers and all) of this Jan Brett story comes with lots of Western dialogue and animals--armadillos, as the title suggests.

Bo the fourth of a set of armadillo brothers, and gets himself into a pickle now and again, especially since (typical of armadillos) he can't see too well. In this tale, Bo wanders off after a lizard and ends up mistakenly following a red cowboy boot.

The boot wearer, like Bo, is a bit green around the ears. She's trying to make them look well worn.

Trailing the boot, Bo rounds his way into the rodeo ring, across a cook out, and into a dance hall. Finally he figures out that he's befriended a boot.

This was one of our least favorite Jan Brett stories. Still, it's better than a lot of children's fare making the store shelves these days, just for the illustrations alone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "On the 10th Day of Christmas.....The Presents Are Beginning to Pile Up!
This book is basically an illustrated story of the original song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas".What is significant about this book is that Jan Brett's style is to feature side panels, alongside the main page which carries the words for each of the twelve verses.
The words and music to this song are on the first few pages. From there on, the main idea of each verse is illustrated in the center panel on two pages, while the side panels depict the other part of the verse. For instance, on the first day, you are shown a partridge bird sitting in the pear tree, while the side panels show "the true love", the young man riding his horse to his fair lady's house. This young man is courting his fair lady, and each day he gives her another present; each day, the amount, or the number increases.

As the story goes on, you see that he has captured her heart and once they marry and have children, the story continues on, for twelve days of gift-giving.The author illustrator, has such fine skills in illustrating the animals, and provides details for all the illustrations.

Even the top panels over the main page, hold simple but definite illustrations of exactly what the gift for that day is.While it's a small book, it's a possible idea for a table-setting for all those invited to dinner. Here's to many more Christmas celebrations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story in a sturdy package
As a school librarian, I needed a copy of The 12 Days of Christmas that could withstand heavy use and not-so-careful handling by Pre-K, K, & 1st grade students. This poster board edition filled that need beautifully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Twelve Days of Christmas
I was very happy with the product and the quick shipping that I received.I would order again from this person

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite Childrens Book
This was one of my favorite books growing up. I, like almost all children loved christmas and this book brings back so many memories for me of Christmas' past. I can remember sitting and just marveling at the illustrations of the book. There are so many differnet things going on in each page that I could literally sit for an hour just going through the different scenes. There is of course the famous christmas carol progressing beautifully through the center frame of each page, but along the sides there is the story of a young husband and wife cutting down a christmas tree and having a beautiful 19th century christmas celebration with their two children. And on each page there is also the phrase "Merry Christmas" in (I think) 12 different languages.
I truly loved this book as a child, and even now as an adult (I'm 20). I'm writing this review from memory, if that shows how much of an impact this book had on me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, but...
I bought this book because 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' is one of my son's favorite songs.I love the illustrations, they're beautifully done. However, the order of the lines appears to be an older form (and somewhat less standard now). The way I've always heard it sung was 12 drummers drumming, 11 pipers piping, 10 lords a-leaping, 9 ladies dancing... this book has the lords and ladies first, then the drummers and the pipers.I realize that this sounds like a funny gripe, but little kids can get really focused on something being in the 'right' order and since this version is going to differ from the way kids hear it sung, it has the potential to bug them. ... Product Description
Everybody loves the story of the curious little girl named Goldilocks, who made herseld quite at home in the house of the three bears. Jan Brett's faithful retelling brings new life to this all-time favorite nursery tale. A Horn Book Recommended Paperback for Folklore, 1990. A Booklist Children's Editors' Choice. Full color.Amazon.com Review
Children find the story of Goldilocks delightful for so manyreasons. There's a trespassing little girl, for starters, who bargesinto the bears' house uninvited and not only snoops around, but eatsthe bears' food! The suspense of wondering whether she'll get caughtonly adds to the thrill of the trespassing itself, and the repeatedlines about the three bears with their three distinct voices, bowls, chairs, and beds further endear this tale to the preschool set. In Jan Brett'sGoldilocks, the bears and the slightly audacious flaxen-hairedheroine all sport traditional (Black Forest?) costumes with detailedembroidery, and the wooden furniture is carved with bears, birds, andflowers. (Intricate borders--carved wooden panels in this book--areJan Brett's special signature.) Brett is the illustrator of manywell-known folk tales, fairy tales, and poems, such as The Mitten and Edward Lear'sThe Owl and the Pussycat. Of her exquisite interpretation ofthis beloved story, Booklist writes, "This isperfection." (Ages 3 to 6) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations but too politically correct
The illustrations in the book are gorgeous. However, they are possibly too complex for young readers.Still, the illustrations are beautiful.I really object to the descriptions of the three bears.Papa bear has become a "great, huge bear" and mama bear the "middle-sized bear" while baby bear is now a "little, small, wee bear".Ridiculous! The story has gone from a family of bears, whose home is invaded by a (beautifully drawn) little girl, to an unrelated collection of bears of varying sizes that make the story clunky to read, for no obvious benefit to the story or anything else besides some distorted sense of political correctness.I've returned the book, and suggest that you look elsewhere for the classic story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jan Brett's Goldilocks and the Three Bears
My granddaughter, almost 3, & I have read several versions of this story.I think this one is her favorite.I love to hear her retell it, "great, hooge bear."

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Goldilocks I've Seen So Far
This is the classic story of Goldilocks, adapted from Andrew Lang's Green Fairy Book and lavishly illustrated in Jan Brett's wonderful style. It is told in the traditional way, with its repetitive scenes, different voices, and climactic ending.Goldilocks unashamedly trespasses in the three bears' home, damages and steals their property, and deserves the fearful ending (and perhaps a worse punishment).Parents will have to supply their own moral evaluation, however, because the author's emphasis is rightfully on the pleasing symmetry of the tale and the careful details in each picture and its borders, which provide glimpses of other characters.Goldilocks is warmly and lovingly drawn, with shining blonde braids and a beautifully embroidered dress; the bears are also dressed in traditional German costumes, and their furniture is intricately carved with bears and other images. The excellent artistry supplies a visual feast to accompany this traditional story.

There may be a better illustrated Goldilocks book, but this is the best I've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jan Brett at her best
My older sister had kids way before I did, so when I was pregnant with my first baby, she gave me some of her family's favorite books as a starter library for my new family.

It was one of the nicest things you could do for a booky person like me!

One of her favorites was Jan Brett, and I can see why. There is so much going on in a Jan Brett book.

You can read Goldilocks as a straight story book, words and pictures, and enjoy it very well.

You can go back to the beginning and hunt for little mice in the woodcuts on every page, and watch as they plant and tend crocus bulbs that will turn into the flowers Goldilocks is collecting when she discovers the three bears' house.

You can look for "live" mice on every page, and act out their emotions as they enjoy the story.

You can guess each one of the three bears' favorite things by looking at their colors and motifs all through the story.Papa bear likes yellow things and bumblebees; Mama bear likes red things and strawberries, and Baby bear likes blue things and mushrooms.

Every page is loaded with clues as to what comes next -- your child can tell you the next part of the story before you turn the page.

The illustrations are extraordinary. This is my favorite Jan Brett book.Enjoy it with your family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasing Illustrations
Brett, Jan, retold and illustrated by. Goldilocks and the Three Bears. 1987.
British Folktale Picture Book
The author uses its own unique style to tell a story that not only entertains, but provides children with insight into other's feelings. The words sometimes flow a little choppily. Some might find this distracting to their importance.Upon hearing the story, various types of expression by its recipients is possible. While the retelling is adequate, what this book mainly brings comes from its magnificent illustrations.
Amazing illustrations are characteristic of the author/illustrator. The illustrator is the author of the retelling. She is well known and keeps to her consistent theme as in her other stories, with "Hedgie" intricately hidden on the bedposts. The frames keep the story flowing from one scene to the next, allowing the reader to anticipate each page's turn.Every page gives the reader an eyeful. The pictures capture attention and want to be looked at again and again. Each look brings more discoveries of the illustrator's attention to detail.
The author/illustrator encourages cognitive stimulation.Young thinkers are positioned to breakaway from the mind's general imagination and look deeper into the interpretation.A youngster seeing the pictures and hearing the words is most likely considering his or her own self as an addition to each scene.Young children are able to make personnel connections to the story as it is analyzed and made meaningful.

Product Description
This retelling of the classic fairy tale will appeal to children because of its mystery, suspense, and romance, and to adults because of its exploration of the duality in human nature.Amazon.com Review
This beloved old French fairy tale has enjoyed renewedpopularity in recent years. Beauty, as you may recall, is the youngestdaughter of a devoted father who has fallen on hard times. Returningfrom a journey, he picks a rose for his daughter, enraging the ownerof the rosebush, the fearsome boarlike Beast who inhabits a nearbycastle. As payment for the rose, Beauty must leave her family andreside in the Beast's castle as his companion. She gradually comes toappreciate the Beast's kind nature, and, after leaving him to visither family, realizes that she has fallen in love! Beauty willinglyreturns to her Beast, in time to break the spell that has caused hiscurrent, beastly countenance and restore him (and the servants in thecastle) to their human forms.

Jan Brett--well-known for herartistry in Goldilocksand the Three Bears and The Mitten--hasworked her usual magic on this beautiful edition of Beauty and theBeast. In a unique visual spin on the story, the tapestries hungon the walls of the Beast's castle reveal the true identities of theanimal servants who are under the same spell as the Beast--a subtle, fascinating feature that may not be noticed until the second or thirdreading. The story's old-fashioned and graceful language perfectlyaccompanies the French court setting. One of the finest takes on thisclassic tale, Brett's Beauty and the Beast is described byKirkus Reviews as "a lovely, carefully made edition of anold favorite." (Ages 5 to 8) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Childhood Favorite!
Jan Brett's Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairy tale books that I have collected so far. I originally came across it in middle school and I have been enchanted with it ever since. It is rendered beautifully, with period accurate 18th Century clothing, exotic animals, fantastic scenes, and amazing colors and detail. The story is very similar to the original French tale unlike the Disney version. It is a book that I would recommend for younger and older readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Fairy tales are supposed to be!!!
Jan Brett's illustrations are so colorful and richly drawn that you could tell the story without the words if you wanted to.Her illustrations are magical.
This book is a wonderful telling of the fairy tale. The true meaning of the tale comes shining through. The illustrations bring life to the printed words.
You will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations
Jan Brett's books are always richly and beautifully illustrated. There is always a little extra "story" in the illustrations. In this one, you will be watching the animal servants throughout the book. Pay close attention to the tapestries in the background to see who these animals really are. My favorite are the monkeys. This version is very much like the original French fairy fale, and is well told.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!!
I got this book years ago when I worked for the publisher.I've given this book as a gift many times. The illustrations are just breathtaking and whimsical. You will find yourself stopping and searching the pictures in the middle of the story. The story is very nicely done and my kids enjoy it much more than the Dineyized version storybook they have. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for young readers
This book is about a little hedgehog who looks for a book to read on a cold day. It's a very short book, only a few pages long -- good for early readers, who sometimes get overwhelmed with long books. The illustrations are full page and lovely.

My daughter is 5 years old and in kindergarten. She enjoyed the book.I'd recommend it for kindergarten or first grade as a reader.Younger kids might enjoy looking at the pictures or having the parents read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The illustrations are wonderful, as always with Jan Brett, but I was shocked at how few pages there were, even given the lower price. A good first introduction for an early reader, but I would much prefer to interact with a child around one of her picture books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very memorable
My son was about 3 when we bought this book. Now he is 16 and we still quote from this book all the time! We are a Halloween loving family and this book always kept that feeling around for us! I just bought it for a dear friend who is having a baby!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite Halloween book
Here it is, a week before Christmas, and my son (4) is still pulling this book out for me to read it to him!He is in love with it.The illustrations are GORGEOUS!His favorite part is the revelation of whom is living under the porch, and the narration as to why they are so afraid on Halloween is fun.My older children (9 and 11) even enjoy reading this to their younger brother. It is a big hit in our house.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous illustrations add a star to my otherwise midrange review.
The artwork in this book is really nice and detailed. But as far as Halloween books it isn't ranking up high for my 4yo son's favorites. He thinks some of the illustrations are "scary" and call me overprotective, but I wasn't thrilled with the devil page. In a year or two I expect my son will like it a lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frightening Fun
This delightful little book has all the charm and spookiness of the holiday it represents. As a twenty-two year-old adult, I think this book has equal appeal for adults and children.

Jan Brett's luscious, beautiful pictures perfectly depict the gorgeous darkness of Halloween night and the vibrant colors of different costumes (or are they really monsters?) Accompanied with these pictures are the rhymes of Eve Bunting's wonderful poem, with words easy enough for kids to understand but spooky enough to give even adults a chill.

Both the poem and the pictures, like Halloween, are fittingly creepy and even haunting while still being fun. Together, they make this book the perfect package for anyone wanting to enjoy the true essence of all Hallow's Eve. I earnestly invite you to enjoy this, my dears (polishes fang, retracts claws).

3-0 out of 5 stars Stilted writing, but my son enjoyed it
I personally found the writing style a little stilted in the book. For example, "A devil prances, fiery red, with horns asprouting from his head." and "Thunder, thunder up above! 'What is it, mother?' 'Shh, my love! It's just the thump of creature feet, A creature in a winding sheet."
It reads more like a poem, not the way we speak naturally. If you like a poetic style, you'll probably love this book. But if you want a more relaxed book, then don't buy it.
But anyway, having said that, my four year old son liked the book. The pictures are scary, but not gruesome.Probably a little too scary for a toddler.
Illustrated by Jan Brett, of course the pictures are well-done, but to be honest it's not on the same level as her other works. There is not nearly as much detail as she usually puts in.(For example, no borders filled with tiny illustrations.)The art doesn't look much different than most Halloween books. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Subtle, but still the wrong message
We received this as a gift.

Pros: The illustrations are beautiful and richly detailed, as are all her books.

Cons: As the story goes, only the 'beautiful' horses get to live inside the city walls. Once Fritz proves that he is useful, everyone thinks he's wonderful, he gets to live inside the walls, and the children take special care of him. So...what about the other not-beautiful horses outside the walls? Have they nothing to recommend them? Guess we'll never know, because no one gives them a chance. Or are we to just assume the villagers have learned their lesson and change their ways?

This one mostly stays on the shelf. Try "The First Dog" instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
This is another beautiful book from Jan Brett. The only reason I did not give it a full five stars: the illustrations did not have the borders that Jan Brett is famous for trimming her illustrations with. Those border illustrations are so beautiful and missing from this book.Other than that, wonderful & beautiful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars from missprint.wordpress.com
Noelle of the Nutcracker by Pamela Jane (with illustrations by the inimitable Jan Brett) is one of those books that I seem to have had forever. Copyrighted in 1986, my hardcover copy has been on my bedroom bookshelf since before I can remember. Needless to say that I did not remember much of the story. Happily, though, it is a fast read and I was able to finish it in a day. I dare say there are families somewhere who read this book every Christmas season the way others read Twas the Night Before Christmas and A Christmas Carol (if not, there should be).

There are two main characters in this book. One is a doll named Noelle and the other is a little girl, Ilyana. At the beginning of the story, the characters have one thing in common: they both think Noelle is wonderful.

When Ilyana and her second grade class go to visit Bugle's toy store, Ilyana is captivated by Noelle the beautiful ballerina doll that can stand in all five ballet positions and even has jointed knees and ankles. Ilyana knows her family could never afford such an expensive doll, which is fine. At least until spoiled Mary Jane decides vows that she'll get Noelle for Christmas from her rich father.

Unbeknownst to either little girl, Noelle doesn't want to be owned by anyone. While the other toys dream of being loved and held by real children, Noelle yearns to be discovered and become a dancer on stage. Noelle knows she is destined for fame when a man comes into Bugle's and buys Noelle to be a part of a production of the Nutcracker ballet. But, as Noelle painfully learns, being discovered doesn't always mean fame. And it almost never takes the place of being loved.

Noelle's story is intertwined seamlessly with Ilyana's and, to a lesser extent, Mary Jane's. As the girls get ready for their school pageant, it becomes clear that sometimes it takes more than money to make a wish come true. Sometimes, especially at Christmas, it also takes a little magic (and in this case maybe a few coincidences).

Sometimes when I read books with a child character they feel too young-I'm sure a child would enjoy them but sometimes I have a hard time relating to them on the same level of enjoyment. This book is not like that. The story is short and easy to follow, but it remained enjoyable for me reading it at the age of twenty-two. Jan Brett's illustrations also, of course, add a lot of dimension to the story (although being familiar with Brett's color-illustrated picture books I was a little sad to see the drawings were not in color). After reading the story and once again turning to the cover it's amazing to see how perfectly Brett captured Pamela Jane's vision of Noelle.

This is one of those classic Christmas stories (like the one that I mentioned earlier) that offers a nice shot of holiday spirit along with a message that's worth remembering all year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jan Brett is phenomenal!!!
Jan Brett is a wonderful author and, even more so, a phenomenal artist and illustrator. Her characters are playful and fun and easily loved by her young readers. My grandaughter's favourite, Annie and the Wild Animals, has been read a hundred times.I've collected a number of Jan Brett's books and hope to pass them on to my great grandchildren!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy simply because it's Brett
We love Jan Brett's books.I ordered this one without reading through it first simply because it was about Hedgie and it was by Brett. My 4 yr old son likes rocket and space stories, and my daughter learned all about Jan Brett in kindergarten (including the fact that she has a pet hedgehog!).This story, however, was just plain bizarre. It didn't make a lot of sense.I found myself editorializing as I read it to them.Don't get me wrong, we love silly, goofy, imaginative stories, but this wasn't even particularly fun. And unfortunately, the pictures weren't nearly as clever or detailed as her other works.Sorry.:(

5-0 out of 5 stars Jan Brett has another great book!
We love all of Jan Brett's books. This one in particular is a favorite. Not only are her story lines great but the art work is incredible. This is one of the best!

4-0 out of 5 stars terrific book
This is a wonderfully illustrated book with truly artful and exciting pictures. And the story, though silly on the surface, is a subtle statement towards the importance of taking care of our world. My son first found this book at the library and refused to let me return it. After several renewals, we finally purchased the book. Jan Brett's book is a treasure.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 Year Old Daughter Loves This Beautiful Odd Book
At first reading, I thought this story was very awkward and did not make much sense. My daughter, however, loves it so much that we've read it every night for almost 3 weeks. We've poured over the pictures and Planet Mikkop is now a favorite place in her imaginary world. I recommend this book, even with it's clumsiness, simply because it has captured my daughter's attention like few books have - and we read a lot!

3-0 out of 5 stars Brett should stick to illustration
I was delighted to find a Jan Brett book for my nieces that I had not seen before.I am a big fan of her illustrations and love it when her sidebar illustrations tell a mini story that even the youngest reader can follow. They are so much fun to read to children.

I am also a lover of hedgehogs and collect her books that feature them just for the illustrations.I hate to give her a rating of less than 5.

However, this story was very poorly thought out.It didn't seem to make a lot of sense. The five-year old I was reading to, who is normally quite engaged in books, sat there with her eyes glazed over and her three-year-old sister actually ran off.Their mother and I were almost embarassed to be presenting this story to them.Next time we'll just make up a story to go with the pictures. If there is a next time...

I love Jan Brett, but she should stick to what she does best and get some help with the writing! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hours of fun and tons of great memories
This book is amazing. Well, maybe not amazing, but really, really great.

Jan Brett's artwork is fabulous. Full of detail. My kids spend hours looking through her books.

But this story is so fun and has such a great 'surprise' to it. My kids act it out for hours. Even the baby gets into it yelling "honey, honey, honey" as he runs up and down the hall.

Not only do we love to read this book, but we learned about various animals and it sparked a desire to learn more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bright little picture
The pictures are amazing, as Brett usually makes them, in this charming African folktale. It's cute, and the quick writing keeps the reader hooked as much as the art, and the "surprise" is delightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
Yet another delightful and beautiful Jan Brett book.Every classroom that I have shared this book with loves it(PK THRU Second).Very easy to move to a disscussion about sharing and doing the right thing. Not to mention how fasinated with the illustrations each child is.If you like Jan Brett's style, this is another must have for your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY NICE WORK.A FAVORITE OF MINE.
Not only do I enjoy the story this book offers, I do feel it is one of the best illustrated works out today. The accuracy of the drawings, the details and the general flow are a wonder to the eye. Each time you read this one, you spot something new.Of course the moral of the tale is great as most fold stories are and the author well makes his point. This is one of those books that is a lot of fun to read to your child or to a group of children, discussing the situatuion and discussing the illustrations. As to the fact that the honey badger may not have acted as true to his or her form in the wild, for goodness sakes folks, these creatures, badgers, birds and all don't talk either! This is a story, a delightful story, take it as such.Overall, recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing illustrations

Edward Lear's nonsense poem about two unlikely sweethearts--an elegant owl and a beautiful cat--has found a perfect match in artist Jan Brett. She traveled to the Caribbean (the land where the Bong-tree grows, perhaps?) to research her illustrations as well as the settings, costume details, plants, and fish native to the area. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book

This is a lovely rendition of the poem - evokes beautiful peaceful feelings through the illustrations, and yet the complexities of the drawings involve so many different aspects. Children can find on each page similar fish, and other sea life as well as the special 'looking for' the little seahorse which is on every page. The scenes are active, involved, and peaceful at the same time - you find yourself able to sit on one page and discuss many things on it, or just enjoy it, for a long time. My 2- 1/2 yr old first got this from the libary and we had it for months, and then we bought it and she still loves it. Yet the board version I would purchase even if she were older! (I even had wanted this for my birthday!)
Love it!

Wonderful Heidelberg folk motif. I found a used paperback and liked it so well that I bought the hardcover. That says it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Darn Good Illustrations and a Nice Story Too
I've never heard the name Berlioz before reading this book.Oh well, that's no big deal.Berlioz proves to be a likeable guy, even though he doesn't really do anything. He doesn't come up with a great plan to save the day or anything. In fact, he CAUSES the conflict of the story. You see, he's all worried about the performance he and his band have to give and he's not paying attention to the road. He's lucky he doesn't run a stop sign and get hit by a train.Instead he get stuck in a pothole.A bunch of folks offer to help pull him out but no one succeeds. Then a little bee ends up saving the day.And that seems to be the story of Berlioz the Bear.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bravo, Berlioz!
This is a cute little story.Berlioz is late for a concert and having trouble with his double bass to boot (a strange and unwanted buzzing noise accompanies his playing). The bandwagon gets stuck in a pot hole and the draft donkey just won't budge.A series of animals in increasing order of size and strength--from a rooster to an ox--think they are the solution, but all fail to move the donkey. In a surprising twist we discover the source of Berlioz' bass's buzzing and the donkey suddenly finds motivation. As a result, they make it on time and we learn that the ability to effect change does not always depend on size and strength.Very nicely illustrated. Each lavish page is framed with marginal drawings which show you the country folk gathering at the village in preparation for Berlioz' concert. This is a nice touch and heightens the drama. There's something almost Aesopian about this delightful book.Highly recommended; a great bed-time story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Jan Brett Favourite
My 5 year-old daughter loves this book. Not only are the illustrations fascinating and detailed as in all of Brett's books, but the story is very charming and funny. The surprise ending will make you and your child giggle for certain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whimiscal and lovely book!
This is another fun book that my toddlers love to read ~~ ok, have mom read to them. This one is fun to read ~~ with a band of traveling bears. They are getting ready to play at a ball in a nearby town when their wagon hits a hole in the ground and a wheel gets stuck ~~ then their donkey decides to sit. A bunch of animals offer to help but none of them were strong enough to get the wagon of bears out of the hole. Till an angry bumblebee flies out of one of the instruments and stings the donkey into action.

How clever is that! If my toddlers were older, I know they would laugh with glee. I did!

This is another book to add to your collection of Jan Brett's books ~~ she's a guarantee when it comes to entertaining children and their parents with beautifully illustrated books and wonderful storylines.

Product Description
As St. Nick and eight tiny reindeer descend through a brilliant night sky, the famous Christmas poem begins. The father narrates the words just as Clement Moore wrote them, and artist Jan Brett captures the spirit of the story in glorious illustrations. Visually she extends it for children who will delight in watching two mischievous stowaways from the North Pole enthusiastically exploring the sacks of gifts on the roof. St. Nick, inside the house, is unaware, until the toys spill down onto the lawn -- then he turns with a jerk, and sees them.Antique toys and exquisite ornaments frame the borders, in which the father, St.Nick, or the family cat and dog can be found watching the action. A unique and beautiful edition, which all the family will cherish for years to come. Amazon.com Review
Whose tiny faces are peeking out from Santa's golden sleigh?Yikes! It's two of Santa's elves who are Christmas Evestowaways. Beloved illustrator Jan Brett's version of The NightBefore Christmas lets these two mischievous elves add theirrambunctious spirit to this familiar 1823 rhyming story. Here, Santaand his reindeer land on the snowy roof of a Victorian mansion in NewEngland. While Santa delivers the toys inside, the elves and thereindeer frolic around the lawn, as a pig (earmarked for a girl namedJan) and a few alphabet blocks spill out of sacks into the snow. Santaswiftly reins in the mischief-makers and "away they all flew like thedown on a thistle." Brett's richly illustrated borders are lavishlydecorated with antique toys, ornaments, and sweet treats, allsurrounded with twisting golden ribbons. They also give us a window onthe mansion's inhabitants, including the children watching Santa'sdeparture in awe. 2-0 out of 5 stars Two boys' review: Hollywoodesque and distracting illustrations
The 5-star reviews for this book ignore the fact that Jan Brett's illustrations are Hollywoodesque and distracting from the classic poem itself. Betraying the golden rule -- If it isn't broken, don't fix it -- Brett inserts in to additional characters. Nearly a third of the book features two unnamed elves who play with the toys and generally cause havoc on the roof as Santa fills the stockings.

Instead of enhancing Clement Moore's poem, the illustrations scream for attention. The effect drowns out the lyrical quality of this classic story. Often on facing pages you are bombarded with two full-page illustrations bookended by six additional panels, three on each side. Your eyes can only skip and stutter across the pages or risk losing any semblance of a storyteller's cadence.

This book was especially disappointing because earlier during that same bedtime reading session we enjoyed Christmas Magic by Sue Stainton and illustrated by Eva Melhuish. That book is an excellent example of how the marriage of story and illustrations can work magic for children.

I wrote a 5-star review for a beautiful version of Clement Moore's The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Douglas W. Gorsline and recommend you buy that book instead. Don't give up hunting for an out-of-print copy, if necessary. Gorsline's illustrations are heartwarming and true to the original poem.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with Jan Brett
Jan Brett books are like potato chips.....you can't have just one!I started reading Brett books when my daughter was in grade school.I fell in love with her illustrations and cute stories. Now my daughter is a new Mommy and I've bought this set of board books to start my Grandson off with Brett books.Jan Brett's illustrations are so detailed that you can feel the textures of material, hair and plants with your eyes.Though The Mitten is probably my favorite book, I love and buy every book she writes.I kept collecting Brett's books even after my daughter was too old to read these books. This would make a great, different, baby shower gift or for a one to four year old's birthday."Santa" likes bringing Brett books, too!Start with these board books and grow up with Jan Brett and Hedgie, the Hedgehog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun!
I bought this book set for my 6-year-old niece because she had told me that Jan Brett was her favorite author. The books were a lot of fun, perfect for a child who is just learning to read as there are no hard words, but the thing that really was outstanding to my niece and me was the art work. Not only was it beautiful, but very clever too, giving us lots to talk and giggle about as we noticed things pertaining to the stories painted on the sides and tops of the pages.I would highly recommend this set to anyone who likes to encourage children to read, think and discover. ...
