A surprising discovery
I found this book at my University's library. An admirer of Anne's novels, this new study of her life and works was a pleasant surprise. Beware: The text of the biography and the footnotes are set in small print. I found the substance to be well-researched, erudite and charming. Chitham takes the "Bronte myth" propounded by Charlotte, E. Gaskell, et. al., as it applies to the youngest sister, and compares it with factual records, reminisinces, and her poems.

As Chitham argues, the poetry cannot be read as auto-biography; Anne wears a "mask" in her art. Chitham breaks new ground: Where "Thorp Green" is; Anne praised her father's curate, William Weightman, for his cheerfulness, yet, subtly hints that she knew he had many admirers!! She was not in love with him: she missed his friendship.The long, introspective "religious" poems are here, too. It is a pity that Charlotte found them *after* Anne's death. They reflect the struggles of a courageous and hopeful soul with despair, loneliness, disillusionment, and finally, the long painful illness of tuberculosis.

Chitham's "Poems..." is a book for the general reader. A sibling of the Byronic-Romantic Brontës was a Realist. It happens. :) Preferably to be read after Chitham's biography of Anne Brontë. ... Read more

Anne = Good; Format = Horrid
Acton Bell is the greatest of the three sister poets in my estimation and her work here is exemplary. The format of this booklet is infuriating. The admins at Cornell University Library, Digital Collections, should be ashamed.

I wouldn't encourage anyone to get this edition of Anne's work when there are other ways to read her poetry. But...if you want something quick and easy, this is an ugly way to get your hands on Anne's poetry and to introduce a new reader to her genius. This does include the famous intro from Charlotte that appeared in "Selections from Poems by Acton Bell" in the 1850 "Wuthering Heights" and "Agnes Grey" edition and the 1920 intro from C.W. Hatfield. Poems from her Gondal stories (her childhood writings) are included with the characters' pen names. Because Anne's work is displayed in the pages, I can't lower this rating to 1 star...but the poor quality of the end product just doesn't deserve a higher rating. I'm sorry, Anne!
