Product Description
Wuthering Heights is one of those rare books that appeals to a general audience as well as inspiring endless academic enquiry.Baffling and fascinating its first readers, it has been read as a great love story, a tragedy of hatred, a promise of spiritual sublimity, an intriguing textual puzzle, an analogue of the class war, a feminist protest, a poem, a drama, a dialogue. It has inspired hundreds of interpretive versions in other media, and the image of Catherine and Heathcliff on the hill-top (despite not appearing in the novel) has become a cultural icon. In this Readers' Guide, Patsy Stoneman has devised a careful route through the bewildering profusion of critical writing on Wuthering Heights. After a chapter on 19th century responses, the Guide links together a selection of extracts demonstrating the major critical developments of the 20th century, from humanism through formalism to deconstruction.Subsequent chapters, working within this general framework, focus on psychoanalytic readings, source studies, readings using discourse theory, work on dissemination, and political readings including Marxism, postcolonialism and feminism.By combining thoroughness and accessibility, this Guide aims to be useful to both undergraduates and more advanced scholars. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading
Romer Wilson's passion for his subject shines through, though little in the way of new 'realities and truths' are offered. Yet his biography is my favorite to date, especially because of his interpretation of "Wuthering Heights." Catherine is the adult Emily and Heathcliff is her childhood.
This book is thought provoking and worth the read. In fact, now I'd like to know more about Romer Wilson. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great poetry
This book of poetry is wonderful and it is great to have. I'm glad that I had the time and the money to get this. It is a must read for all female aspiring writers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bronte Poems
A wonderful book for any person interested in reading poetry from the Bronte sisters. Even though they were well - known for their novels ( Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Villette...), their poetry wasn't really known that well. This book presents it in a readable format. I recommend it for any Bronte fan. It's good to know about their novels, its even better when you are familiarized with their poems. : )

3-0 out of 5 stars Ah, the successes and faults of the Brontës...
This is a rather small book composed of various poems by Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë. It's divided into three parts; one for each author.

I gave it three stars because it's a good collection, but not really a good read. I find the Brontë's poetry rather dry and cumbersome compared to their books, but it's still worth a look if you're a true fan. Emily is by far the best poet of the three, and at a whopping $2.00, you're not out much if you decide you don't like it... and you definitely get all that you paid for with this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Total Chick Bait
Yep, this book is fine for getting college chicks to dig you.Just have a copy of it on your bedside table and they will think you are sensitive and will be all over you. Don't bother to read the book - just keep it in plain sight.

5-0 out of 5 stars READ ME! READ ME! READ ME!
I enjoyed the selected poems. I saw a lot of the same passion in the poems that I have seen also in many of their novels. If you enjoyed the poems you should be sure to get a hold of the Tenant of Wildfell Hall written by Anne Bronte and my utmost favorite Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte is definitely a book I would recommend. ... Product Description
Emily Brontë's achievement as a poet has been eclipsed by her masterpiece, Wuthering Heights. The Poems of Emily Brontë is the first edition to appear with full scholarly apparatus, and to preserve the writer's original (sometimes unorthodox) presentation and revisions. With no manuscript of Wuthering Heights extant, this edition of her sometimes undervalued poetry gives the reader the rare chance of seeing the writer's creative mind at work. Recreating the literary context of the poems, this edition also takes into account recent critical insights. The enlightening introduction and commentary place the poems in their literary context, and a large number of echoes and parallels from Scott, Byron, Moore, and other authors are identified. ... Product Description
Biographical material on Emily Bronte is scarce. In the past, biographers have taken this as an excuse to portray intuition as fact, creating a confused and inaccurate image of the author who wrote Wuthering Heights. In A Life of Emily Bronte, Edward Chitham rejects wholeheartedly the temptation to validate speculation. He describes his book as an 'investigative biography', delving into Emily's childhood, her relationships with her family, her father's Irish roots, and the influences conveyed by friends and acquaintances. Using material neglected by other biographers, Chitham makes an illuminating and scholarly study of the events and characters that shaped Emily's inspiration; a puzzle that has confounded many and made her, up to this point, an enigmatic and misrepresented figure. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars `In life, she took few pains to be understood.'
Many will be familiar with the Bronte sisters: Charlotte, Emily and Anne. Many readers will know Emily Bronte as the author of `Wuthering Heights': a novel which is probably loved and loathed in equal measure. Some of us also are familiar with Emily's poetry. But of Emily herself we tend to know very little directly and this makes her fascinating to those of us who seek to try to understand how a young woman (barely 30 years old when she died) could create `Wuthering Heights' and the contrasting natural worlds in her poetry.

In writing this biography (first published in 1987) Edward Chitham readily acknowledges that Emily sets the biographer a difficult task.In writing this book, Edward Chitham has undertaken an approach which he calls `investigative biography'.He moves from the known facts, through the aspects of the world that Emily must have seen by dint of her existence in time and place, to theories and their supporting bases of evidence. So, what do we learn from this book?In some ways, there are even more questions to explore but it seems unlikely now that we will ever obtain a complete and accurate picture of Emily Bronte. To me this seems entirely appropriate: Emily was secretive, inhabited a rich inner world and seemingly made limited concessions to the `real world'.In short, and to quote Mr Chitham: `[..]`Wuthering Heights' is in all ways consistent with Emily's life as we know it, and in particular with her inner life, as that emerges before us in her rare oracular statements, and especially in her poetry.'

This book will be of interest to those seeking to gain additional insights into Emily. It includes a valuable select bibliography to which I would add the books published since (during the 1990s) by Juliet Barker.

3-0 out of 5 stars $0.89 Kindle Edition
I'm going to rate the quality of the Kindle Edition since this seems to be the only place to do so.I won't go into the story since there's a perfectly good sysnopsis on the description page and several well written reivews on the work itself. The kindle edition was good to say the least.I did find a few spelling errors that were annoying, but none more so than the heroine, Jane, repeatedly being referred to as 'Janet' throughout the entire novel; I find this to be unacceptable.I do not know if this occurs in the print-versions as this was my first encounter with the story.Had there been less (or no) spelling errors as well as the correct name reference to the main character, I would have given it 5 stars on content alone---although it still creeps me out that 19 year olds and 40 year olds so frequently ended up marrying in that day and age, but I just had to put it out of my mind when reading.Otherwise it was a good read and I look forward to reading more works by the Bronte sisters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true classic. This Kindle edition leaves some things to be desired.
What can I say about this work that has not already been said in the many reviews that came before? It is truly one of the greats of English literature, and re-reading it as an adult is a pleasure that reaps even more rewards than when I read it as a girl.

My only warning is for those who are reading it in the Kindle edition. The good points are that it is nicely formatted and almost free of spelling errors. The negatives are that it has no Table of Contents, linked or otherwise; and although it claims to be illustrated, no illustrations were included in the version I read.

For pure reading pleasure, this novel has few equals. For formatting, you might be able to find better.

The volume's wide selection of reviews and criticism illustrates the powerful impression made by this novel from its first appearance in 1847, when even hostile readers expressed reluctant fascination, to the present day, when its qualities have repeatedly focused attention in various Marxist, feminist, structuralist, and post-structuralist critical inquiries. Among Victorian admirers represented are D.G.Rossetti, Matthew Arnold, Swinburne and G.H.Lewes. Twentieth-century criticism runs from Virginia Woolf and E.M.Forster to Terry Eagleton, Margaret Homans and Hillis Miller. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very complex but a great romance story.
This book is very complex and slightly hard to follow simply because it is told by someone and not written in the present. It is also quite violent. It is twisted and morbid but makes a very good story to last a while. Compared to Jane Eyre written by Ms. Bronte's sister, Charlotte, this is abit dull.In Jane Eyre, the love of the story was more visible while inWuthering Heights, Cathy falls in love because of money and doesn't showthe true feelings she has for Heathclif. All in all, this was an enjoyablebook though it could have been much better. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not likeable, but likeable!
I too read this book for high school. I found myself not liking any of the characters and wondering how I could like a book with such an unlikeable cast! I soon realised, however, that the point is not to 'like' thecharacters particularly (as we are made to do in most modern books andmovies) but to see their struggles, passion and lives for what they are.Life is hard, life can be ugly.Another thing that struck me was theintense love and devotion to Catherine from such an unloveable being asHeathcliff. The story tells me that Catherine and Heathcliff could onlyreally love each other. My advice is read this book. You may not likeall the characters and you can forget all the romance cliches, but it isvaluable to know both as a piece for school and a tragic story. Oh, anddo read Joseph's parts aloud-it helps!

1-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a waste of my time!
I am a senior in high school...My teacher loves this book for some WEIRD reason.. She made all kinds of hype over it and made it sound like a great book and we would love it.How wrong she was!!!I don't think one personin class liked the book, and most of us are advanced readers. At any rate, the teacher still thinks its a great book and tries to ignore the fact thatnobody likes it.The storyline is boring ...its someone telling anotherstory....when half the characters have the same name and its really hard tofigure out who is doing what and who is who at times!I wish I didn't haveto read this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars This novel was really complicated and a waste of my time.
I don't understand why we (seniors) had to read Wuthering Heights in order to graduate. The book has nothing to do with us at all.The book was really complicated and the movie was worse. Why did they use the samecharacters over and over again. And by the way, how old was Nelly Deananyway? This book really sucked. ...
