Product Description
Referring to her olive-skinned complexion Robert Browning called his wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, "his little Portuguese." It is from this nickname that the title "Sonnets from the Portuguese" is derived. Sonnets from the Portuguese, a series of love poems from Elizabeth to her husband, is combined here with a collection of 60 of her other poems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dover Thrift Editions
Dover Thrift Editions are the college student's [and teacher purchasing en masse] best friends. While they tend to lack footnotes, they do include thoughtful, decent introductions.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very explicit and moving love
These poems were written by Elizabeth Barret Browning for her husband, the poet Robert Browning. They were not meant to be published but they have become her most well- known work. They contain one of the finest love poems ever written, the much anthologized , " How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." and other poems reflecting her love for her husband and her views on life.
The poems are written in a very explicit and clear way,in a style which had great appeal to the common reader of their day. And despite a certain archaic quality in the diction they speak to us today.

Here is one example.
"If thou must love me , let it be for naught,
Except for love's sake only. Do not say,
"I love her for her smile-her look- her way
Of speaking gently- for a trick of thought
That falls in well with mine, and certes brought
A sense of pleasant ease on such aday"-
For these things in themselves. Beloved, may
Be changed, or change for thee- and love, so wrought,
May be unwrought so. Neither love me for
Thine own dear pity 's wiping my cheeks dry-
A creature might forget to wep, who bore
Thy comfort long, and lose thy love thereby!
But love me for love's sake , that evermore
Thou may'st love on, through love's eternity."

The early death of Elizabeth Barrett Browning underlines the intense and tragic quality of her and her husband's great love.

4-0 out of 5 stars More chick bait
These poetry books are absolutely wonnerful to have on your bedside table. It don't make no difference what poetry book just as long as it is romantic sounding.Chicks dig it and will attack like a wolverine after a tuna.EEEHAAA!

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice selection
I do not like many 19th-century English poets, but Elizabeth Barrett Browning is one that I do.Her Sonnets from the Portuguese are some of the most honest love poems I have read, and the other poems in this selectionare a good reminder that she tackled many social issues as well. However,as a dog person, my favorite poem has to be To Flush, My Dog, a tribute toher faithful companion. ... Product Description

What do a chamber pot, a famous poet, a family feud, and a long-ago suitor all have in common?

Elizabeth Barrett Browning might have written about the length and breadth of love, but Abby Randolph has given up on all that, preferring to spend her time between her cluttered "needs work" apartment and an overcrowded antiques mart optimistically named Objects of Desire. Yet Abby can't help but wonder what happened to her earlier passionate self . . .

Then the Antiques Roadshow comes to town, and Abby joins thousands of Boston's hopefuls at the crack of dawn, artifact in hand. But there, among the carousel horses and bedraggled stuffed animals, Abby's rather squalid piece of porcelain gets the star treatment. And from the moment the show airs, everything changes—friendships, her career, love affairs, even the way she views herself and others—as life comes rushing back at Abby Randolph full force.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much to read
This is a fast read, chiefly because you can skip half the text. In fact, I had to skim, otherwise I'd have gotten too frustrated with Abby, the main character, whose personality is nonexistent and inertia more than annoying.

Other parts you can skip: the narrator's endless cataloging of antiques. The silly encounter with a reporter, the whole of which was a hoot, being so badly overwritten. The soppy pity parties in Abby's apartment. The conversation with the make-up artist on Antiques Roadshow. The deposition scene. Anything Lavinia is made to say. The caricatures who pass as men in the novel.

I came away despising Abby, rolling my eyes at most of the characters (except Gus, Mary Agnes and Clyde -- Clyde's "apologies" are the best reading!), and feeling anxious for the chamber pot. It's pretty bad when you're more concerned for the fate of an inanimate object than the main character. But then again, I think the chamber pot is the main character.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everybody's Leavings
Abby the main character states on page #3: " I'd always liked everybody's leavings, the discarded and dented bits and pieces of other people's lives"....yeah, me too. This novel shows how sometimes those bits and pieces affect us long after the people are gone, and how sometimes we are left topick up our own bits and pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun, especially for antiques fans!
Loved this.Similar to Claire Cook but with an antiques/Massachusetts setting.I'm an antiques nut AND a MA resident, formerly of Cambridge, so I'm probably biased. Ms. Medwed writes about a milieu that she really knows, and the narrator's dating disasters were funny.I definitely plan to read more by this author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy, fun read
Fast read. Interesting characters. Pretty predictable ending but it was a happy one. Better than watching tv. No violence, foul language or gratuitous sex. Humorous and intelligent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read
Being from the Boston area myself this book truly is a wonderful and accurate ride through the Boston area. Men and women will find something in this because this isn't "chic lit" it's a good story. Abigail works hard to get what she wants and she gets it, no down and out failure to be found. The dialogue is a bit weak at times but the narrative makes up for that.Unlike other books, this story does not end where you think it ends, highly recommended. ... Product Description
The love letters of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett remain among the most famous in history.Daniel Karlin's selection, based on a fresh examination of the original manuscripts, provides new insight into the clandestine correspondence which led to their elopement in 1846.
They poured the full resources of their minds and hearts into these complex and subtle letters, as they explored each others needs, desires, passions, and anxieties. Together, the letters tell the enthralling story of how they waited many years to elope, overcoming many obstacles such as the neurotic presence of Elizabeth Barrett's father and the intense demands they made on one another. This volume allows the reader to follow the story in all its scope and richness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic True Love Story
"How Do I Love Thee?" was a romantic true love story. In the book, Robert Browning gave Elizabeth "Ba" Barret the courage to love and live life.Ba was an invalid who lived with a widowed, controlling father of seven children.Although, Ba was his pride and joy, he kept her captive through her illness.Ba's poetry caused Robert Browning to fall in love with her and wish to meet her.The two poets' friendship blossomed through their letters; after they met face to face it soon became love.Soon Ba's father was the only thing standing in the way of their true happiness.

The book begins with a curious statement which holds your attention through the first few chapters."How Do I Love Thee?" becomes very interesting after Ba and Robert finally meet face to face. The author's incorporation of the love poems of Elizabeth Barret Browning and Robert Browning was terrific addition to the story. The end was disappointing, but the book as a whole was a fantastic true love story of two amazing poets. ... Product Description
Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning are without parallel in the nineteenth century: celebrated poets, they became equally famous for their marriage. Still popular more than a century after their deaths, their poetry vividly reflects the unique nature of their relationship.
This collection presents the Brownings' work in the context of their lives: the early years and their initial friendship, their courtship and marriage, the fifteen happy years they spent living in Italy until Elizabeth's death. Both in shorter poems such as Elizabeth's "Hector in the Garden” and Robert's "Natural Magic," or in extracts from longer works such as Aurora Leigh and Pauline, the great themes they shared are all represented: love, marriage, illicit passion, England and Italy, childhood, religion, poetry, and nature.

Elizabeth's famous Sonnets from the Portuguese, based on their love affair, is included in its entirety. The poems are augmented with a generous selection of the marvellous letters the Brownings wrote to each other. ... Read more
