Product Description
1896. Together with a collection of his speeches and a biographical sketch by his wife. The object of The First Battle is to present an account of the leading events and issues of the most critical (presidential) campaign in American history. The work contains an interesting description of the author's famous tour, including his most important speeches, together with the principal addresses and documents identified with the campaign of 1896; the whole embodying a faithful presentation of the rise and development of the silver movement. It also contains a review of the political situation and an analysis of the election returns. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty or faded. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should Be A Classic
The presidential election of 1896 was one of the most interesting and important contests in American history, and it was made so not by the winner (a lackluster Ohio politician named William McKinley) but by the loser, William Jennings Bryan. Although best remembered for the first and last moments of his public career (the "Cross of Gold" speech and his championing of creationism at the Scopes Trial), Bryan was in fact the founding father of modern progressivism. Numerous ideas, ranging from the Federal Reserve and the income tax to anti-imperialism and women's suffrage, can be traced to one of Bryan's three presidential campaigns (1896, 1900, and 1908). What's more, Bryan's personality itself is a study in the best aspects of American character - despite his flaws, he was by all accounts a brilliant orator, devoted husband, loving father, voracious reader and intellectual (although this point is often brought into dispute by his more venomous detractors), sincere believer in democracy and equal opportunity, and often brave champion of causes that no one would touch at the last turn-of-the-century, but which are taken for granted today as being cornerstones of American political progress. This book serves three great functions:
1) It transports the reader back to the presidential election of 1896, truly immersing us in a historic period that has received a much-undeserved obscurity;
2) It shares with us dozens of the early speeches of William Jennings Bryan, thereby exposing us to his oratorical genius and the fertile mind that lay behind the eloquence (reading these speeches is worth the price of the text alone);
3) It gives us an intimate look at the character of William Jennings Bryan himself, a man who brought to the presidency a pro-active and progressive approach that had never before been seen, despite the fact that he was never able to serve in it himself.
The 1890s were a pivotal decade in our nation's history, one in which great and noble men of often diametrically opposing points-of-view (Grover Cleveland, William Jennings Bryan, William McKinley, Marcus Hanna, Eugene Debs, John Peter Atgeld, James Weaver, etc) rose to power and prominence. I cannot imagine that a better book either from or about this period has ever been written. Indeed, I can think of no better book ever written about a presidential campaign. This book should be a must-read for anyone who wishes to study American history, political science, liberalism, and/or the art of rhetoric. ... Read more

Product Description

William Jennings Bryan (1860–1925) moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1887 as a young lawyer and rose rapidly in local Democratic Party affairs. In 1890 he was elected to the U.S. Congress in a Democratic landslide and was reelected in 1892, although he failed in a bid for the U.S. Senate in 1894. After the 1894 campaign, Bryan became editor of the Omaha World-Herald, continued his activities as a proponent of “free silver,” and began a successful stint as a Chautauqua lecturer, honing his already considerable oratorical skills. His reputation as a free-silver advocate was such that his delivery of the “Cross of Gold” speech at the 1896 Democratic Convention won him the nomination for president at the age of thirty-six.

Bryan’s proposal for the unlimited coinage of silver gained him support in the agrarian South and West and opposition in eastern states where banking and mercantile interests were paramount. During the 1896 campaign, Bryan traveled over eighteen thousand miles and made six hundred speeches in twenty-seven states, an unprecedented effort. Bryan lost to McKinley by ninety-five electoral votes, a result that conceals a relatively close popular vote. Although he twice more ran for president, served as Woodrow Wilson’s secretary of state, and ended his career at the Scopes “Monkey Trial,” he will always be best remembered for his galvanic address in 1896.
