Product Description
Simply stated, this book will introduce the surprising literary figure behind a familiar name. Though a mere vestige of William Cullen Bryant's fame survives through inclusion of "Thanatopsis" and perhaps one or two other poems in school anthologies, the nineteenth century celebrated him as one of its great men. He not only deserved that acclaim, but he was actually a more important writer than his century recognized.

Half of this volume consists of a Bryant showcase. Three dozen poems chosen from the hundreds he produced reveal him as a revolutionary of prosody seeking refuge from Calvinism in a pantheistic God. Extracts from his criticism are a homily promoting the prospects for American literary nationalism. Also included here is a pair of his tales which, although almost totally unknown, are among the best work in the genre written before the Civil War.

The other half of this new volume presents a concise biography and, of special interest, three groundbreaking new critical studies. Gado argues that Bryant is the Founding Father of American poetry. As a poet of nature, Bryant played a literary role comparable to the influence on art exercised by his good friend Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School. But perhaps even more important was the example Bryant set for Walt Whitman in a relationship explored here for the first time. A much briefer piece discovers the consistent philosophical belief addressed by a lifetime of poems. The third essay is unique in its consideration of Bryant's short fiction, which has never before received attention.

William Cullen Bryant: An American Voice is a landmark publication. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars biography as it should be written
Because I have long been enamored by Bryant's poem "I Cannot Forget
With What Fervent Devotion" I decided to read this 2008 biography.It is written in chronological order, covering well all the events in Bryant's busy life, from his birth on 3 Nov 1794 in a log cabin two miles from Cummington, MA to his death on 12 June 1878 at his home at 24 W. 16th St in New York City.It discusses his poems as he wrote them and tells of his busy life as editor of the New York Post, his travels all over the world, his role in the nation's history during his time as editor, and the respect in which he was held as he grew to hold his positon as America's greatest poet.When I finished the book I had a good feeling that I had learned what one should know about the man. My only regret about the book is that it does not mention the poem which I memorized over 60 years ago, which poem includes this felicitous stanza:

'Mong the deep-cloven fells that for ages had listened
To the rush of the pebble-paved river between,
Where the kingfisher screamed and gray precipice glistened,
All breathless with awe have I gazed on the scene;

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book
If you like history, biography and poetry you will love this well written book.Even if you think you don't like poetry, you will be surprised.It captures the 19th century first, in the Berkshires, MA and then in NYC.His life is captivating, charming and he's very influential during his life time.The poetry is presented so pleasurablyby telling you where, why and how he wrote it. This was a book I hated to have come to an end.

5-0 out of 5 stars "William Cullen Bryant: Author of America"
A well writen comibation biography/history. For those whom Bryant is an unknown he was an early to mid 19th. Century American Poet/Newspaper Owner/Editorial Writer. Prof. Muller combines these two side of Bryants live very well in his narrative. Bryant was a Northern Democrat who dealth with the changing opinion on slavery during this volital period. This personal transformation and him still remaining a loyal Democrat till 1860 is a remarkable story.

The only fault I can find with this book is that the author incorporates Bryants poetry into the narrative, I would have perfered that he added them to the end of each chapter and not break up his narrative. Other then that minor complaint this is over all and excellent book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHO WAS BRYANT?
If you would like to undertake an interesting survey, try this; stop the next 100 people under the age of 50 that you met on the street and asked them who William Cullen Bryant was.I tell you what, if you can find one, just one, who knows let me know and the next time we meet I will treat you to the beverage of your choice.Hey, I will even spring for lunch!

And there is the pity of this survey.William Cullen Bryant was in this day considered the greatest of American poets, in particular the Romantic Poets.He still is by some, but those ranks are growing thinner and thinner as each year passes.

The old copy of his works I have in front of me was published in 1892, some 14 years after his death.The book is in great shape, with tight binding and no missing pages, but my goodness the book has been read and reread.I find small smudge marks on each page and stains here and there (coffee, tea, tobacco juice..who knows), and the pages are well worn.I purchased this old book a number of years ago at a book auction (I will never tell what I paid for it and in particular will never let my wife know), and I must admit that I have added to its wear and tear over the years. I hope I was able to handle it as lovingly as its previous owners.

This particular book contains a wonderful collection of Bryant's work, twenty eight poems to be exact which of course include Sella and Thanatopsis.There are also offerings such as The Little People of the Snow, Toa Waterfowl, The Land of Dreams, Abraham Lincoln, The Planting of the Apple-Tree, The Conqueror's Grave and The Yellow Violet.Truth be told, in my little opinion, it does not get much better than this!

Bryant's work has always been considered rather thoughtful and philosophic and not generally enjoyed by the average reader.His technical sophistication is without compare and he was of course a strong influence over Whittier.What also is little known, or now ignored, is his tremendous influence over the Hudson River School of Art, my favorite, and was one of the first to actually stand up for the rights of workers.Almost his entire focus was on using nature and the natural world as a metaphor for truth in everything.Bryant had the ability to take the mundane and turn it into a thing of beauty.Take the opening stanza of The Planting of the Apple-Tree:

Come, let us plant the apple-tree.
Cleave the tough greensward with the spade;
Wide let its hollow bed be made;
There gently lay the roots, and there
Sift the dark mould with kindly care,
And press it o'er them tenderly,
As, round the sleeping infant's feet,
We softly fold the cradle-sheet;
So plant we the apple-tree.

Or, as was the wont of poets of the time, he could become quite emotional and quite fired up as when he wrote his The Greek Partisan (This is in reference to the Greek war for independence from Turkish rule in the early 1800s):

(Second stanza)

They go to the slaughter
To strike the sudden blow,
And pour on earth, like water,
The best blood of the foe;
To rush on them from rock and height,
And clear the narrow valley,
Or fire their camp at dead of night,
And fly before they rally,
Chains are round our country pressed,
And cowards have betrayed her,
And we must make her bleeding breast,
The grave of the invader.

This is pretty intense stuff and it gets even better as the poem progresses.

Unless they take a specialized course in college, most people are never exposed to such.This is a pity.

Product Description
1877. Illustrated by W.J. Linton and J. McEntee. William Cullen Bryant was an American poet and editor. At one time, he practiced law, but later devoted himself entirely to writing. He began his career with Thanatopsis (or View of Death), a boyhood piece which astonished America when it was published in 1817, and which has ever since been a favorite with readers. The idea of the poem, that the earth is a vast sepulcher of human life, was borrowed from other poets; but the stately blank verse and the noble appreciation of nature are Bryant's own. The Flood of Years was written when he was a sage of eighty. Among the Trees is one of his best nature poems. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars There is great wisdom in great poetry
Students in public schools, it seems, have never heard of William Cullen Bryant. A few have confused him with William Jennings Bryan, who testified in court opposing the teaching in public schools of the theory of evolution. In fact, many students dislike poetry.
"Thanatopsis" was taught, studied, and discussed in the thirties and forties (a freshman class), for the wisdom it contained, and the eloquence of its poetic expression.
The other two poems in this volume purchased through Amazon are also important, both by the same author.
These poems have been made available to all people who may wish to study their philosophy and wisdom, and make comments on nineteenth century religious and cultural values, compared to those of today.
I am grateful to Amazon (and the publisher) for making it possible for me to renew my acquaintance with the poet, as well as to bring his work to the attention of groups I attend.
