Beautifully written by the master with wonderful black and white photos to match re Buk's trip to Europe. He gets kicked off a French tv station for drunken behavior and also visits his place of birth: Hamburg, Germany. Who could ask for more? Nice job all around. Love the title.

read these pictures carefully
here, and nowhere else is the edge between life (read madness) (screaming late at night alone in the bathroom about toads and death, until his girlfriend brings him to bed, and not remembering it in the morning) and art this thin. ever. if you are curious about these things hold this up to the light like a black and white negative and regard it carefully.

Back off on Gerry, pal.
Who is S.Dahi to call Gerald Locklin a hack?Who is S.Dahi at all?Gerald Locklin is a respected and well-published poet, and this book is a nice remembrance of Bukowski from a friend and colleague.It is fair to note that the volume is slender and that some of the material has been previously published, but it's still pretty good.

Two Poets
Charles Bukowski, Gerald Locklin, two almost household names in the poetry small press.Who came first?Why does it matter? Each was, or is, unique in his approach to the written word. Bukowski liked to drink, to play the horses, to write, but that was not the totality of the poet or the man.Readers seems to expect miracles from authors/poets and artists. Hack on Hank
Gerald Locklin has the dubious distinction of writing the first "book" on Bukowski after his death. The whole book reads like a quickie for profit job. In fact most of it was written while Buk was alive.There are letters and attempts at poetry by this "hack professor"mascrading as Buk's close friend. Don't waste your $25.00 on this book.Instead buy Gay Brewer's (also an academic) book on Bukowski which is byfar the best book written on the subject so far (June 2000).

Slim and overpriced but with a few gems
The Bukowski bandwagon keeps rolling along. Everybody and his drinking pals are coming out with memoirs of the great man. If only they would stick to Bukowski and keep themselves out of it. Bukowski fans are hardlyconcerned with Locklin's habits, penchants and foibles. It ranks withRichmond's "Spinning Off Bukowski" and Cherkovski's"Hank" as self-promoting and self-justifying hack writing posingas literature.

The harsh words above are mitigated by the realisationthat without the above mentioned authors we would know less about Bukowski.These guys knew him and most of us didn't. To the nextcolleague/crony/admirer/detractor etc. who comes out with yet anotherhastily put together fast-buck book please stick to Bukowski and leaveyourselves in the background where you belong.

Readers are advised tolook at the Sounes biography "LOCKED IN THE ARMS OF A CRAZY LIFE"for the best appraisal of Bukovski's life and work. It is ironic thatSounes never met Bukowski and yet his book is the best.

Must Read For All Bukowski Fans
"Visceral Bukowski: Inside the Sniper Landscape of L.A. Writers" is a must read for all Bukowski fans. Ben Pleasants, who was intended to be the Buk's biographer, gives a keen insight into the master's foibles that have eluded previous Boswells.

Underrated. First-Hand Insight.
Ben Pleasants was a friend of Bukowski's. He was on a short list of people- including Gerald Locklin, John Thomas, John Martin (Bukowski's primary publisher), and precious few others - who maintained a cordial, long-term relationship with Bukowski. In fact, Pleasants had Bukowski's blessing to be his biographer, with Buk referring to him as, "my Boswell" in at least one letter. For whatever reason, Pleasants never completed the Buk biography.

What he did eventually write, years after Bukowski's death, was a series of vignettes based on his personal recollections and actual interviews with some of Bukowski's friends and childhood acquaintances. Two chapters of particular interest contain interviews with a pair of Bukowski's childhood companions. They both offer first-hand insight, exposing some of Buk's childhood recollections (which populate much of his work) to be slanted, self-serving, and at least in some cases, extreme distortions of actual fact.

Note: if you're unfamiliar with Pleasant's work - he's an LA-based writer - you'll learn more about his personal story that you might care to in the early chapters. However, in the context of the overall work, these recollections help tie things together, establishing how the author came to know Bukowski, and how his view of Buk the writer evolved over the years.

If you're a casual or beginner Bukowski fan looking for a good Buk bio, I would recommend Locked in the Arms of a Crazy Life, by Howard Sounes. If you're a long-time Bukowski fan who wants all the details of the man, the myth, and the Bukowski spin, this book will provide precious insight from a man who knew him well.

fine close-up memoir
I liked this book and felt it expanded my understanding of Buk as a person and writer.It is not a biography, though, but a series of anecdotes and interviews intertwined with the writer's own life story.It's a nice close-up view of Bukowski, kind of like being there with him, which was enjoyable.For a real biography, one would have to start with the Howard Sounes book and not this one.Some people have characterized this work of Pleasants as character assasination, but I didn't see it that way.This is a good supplement to the Sounes bio Locked In The Arms Of A Crazy Life.

A Strange Brew
Ben Pleasants has long been a important person in the L.A. writing scene. In addition to being a literary journalist, he is also a poet and playwright of some note. He also was a long-time friend of Charles Bukowski, which, combined with his skills as a writer, would seem to make him extremely qualified to take on a book such as this. Qualifications aside, what he has turned out is a very strange product indeed. Mixing tales of Bukowski's life, examinations of his writing, and stories of other writers Bukowski knew (including first and foremost Ben Pleasants himself), Pleasants creates a disjointed tapestry that can be fascinating at times and equally unsatisfying at others. While sections such as the ones that examine topics like Bukowski's fascination with Nazis are compelling, those that delve into his writing seem to miss the mark. Though the subtitle of this books shows that Pleasants' is not just writing about Bukowski but trying to place him in the larger "landscape" of the Los Angeles literary world, many of these chapters too seem to meander about, moving far away from Bukowski without ever pulling the story back together. Overall, though, this book has enough interesting new material to make it worthwhile for the hardcore Bukowski fan. Also, I'm a bit hamstringed here by the Amazon rating system. I would like to give this book three-and-half stars but am forced to choose between three and four. So give this book another half star beyond my rating.

I want to state that I know and have worked with Ben Pleasants professionally. I do not think this has affected my review, but I feel I should be open about these facts.

talent and tragedy
This lively biography by Ben Pleasants deftly captures the engaging yet off putting braggadocio of Charles Bukowski, hero the so-called "Meat Poets" of the sixties and seventies. Wild episodes of drinking, gambling and womanizing seemingly drove and energized his writing.
While illuminating Bukowski's life in and around Los Angeles, Ben Pleasant's challenge of old buddy and loyal fan while official biographer brings him uneasily face to face with his subject's gusto for outrageous womanizing, drunkenness, as well as his tragic, intermittent enthusiasm for Nazism. Nevertheless, the author's long-time intimacy gave him a ring-side seat at the antics which animate this intriguing life story.Bukowski served as one of the lights of mid-twentieth century "hip" literature and this book affectionately declares, despite its unsavory aspects, his sincere commitment to his work be honorably documented. ... A good introduction
Polimeni and Rep have written/illustrated a nice overview and history of Charles Bukowski's life and work.I had read one collection of Bukowski's stories prior to reading this book, so knew a little bit about him; this book has definitely rounded out the picture and helped me decide what other books might be worth reading.I thought it was an interesting touch to lay out Bukowski's passion for drink and other suspect pursuits with no judgment whatsoever--they let the reader draw his own conclusions and focus on the writing.Also, the comic book style makes it a very easy read; I read it in an afternoon.

The purpose of the book is to give the unfamiliar reader a sense of who Bukowski was and the quality of his writing.And on that score, I think it succeeds very well.

Never heard of Bukowski until this book

All that said, Bukowski, though interesting, strikes me as the true author of the ideas of "Betrachtung eines Unpolitischen" first penned by Thomas Mann.Bukowski may write from the depths of poverty and the American working class, but his perspectives are politically ambigious or neutral...he should endorse socialism but doesn't.

Partly, this book makes me think of Maxim Gorky's _Lower Depths_ as a point of comparison...but Bukowski...it's hard to say...apolitical,uncritical...he expresses much angst and suffering but doesn't investigate significantly the root causes of such suffering and depridation;

I'll take Terry Eagleton's lit.crit any day in preference, I'm afraid.I sympathize w/ Bukowski but...

Nevertheless, I feel enriched to at least know about him--which I probably would not have known were it not for this intro book from a famous series of documentary comic boks I deeply respect.

No Need
There's really no great need for this book: Anyone who wants to begin reading Bukowski can start with Post Office, or Ham On Rye, or Run With The Hunted. There are decent starting points already in the canon.

Carlos Polimeni is a thief. This book is worst thing I have ever read. Worse than Sidney Sheldon.

Uncomfortable, but worth it.
Charles Bukowski, Life and Death in the Charity Ward (London Magazine Editions, 1974)

Reading an early book (released early in his career) by an icon is often an amusing experience; it's the opposite of "soon to be a major motion picture!' never coming to fruition. The copywriter for LM writes that Bukowski is "justifiably becoming best-known for his stories." News to those of us reading this thirty years later.

The stories collected here are some of Buk's rawest material, and that's saying something. They go beyond the crude and into the obscene; it's pretty easy to see why no one has picked this one up for reprinting, though one would think a more extreme press (Creation comes to mind) would jump at the chance to get this stuff back out on the streets. The stories, which one wavers between believing autobiographical and hoping to god they're not, detail the lives of various alcoholic losers. Some of them also have amusing side traits like being rapists or child molesters. They're written in the typical Buk slice-of-life style, but the reader is left hoping that these are slices of no one's life.

What makes them worth reading is that they are written in the typical Buk slice-of-life style. Being short stories, they never have the chance to lose their pace, the way the novels sometimes do, and while they all sound the same after a while, there are enough differences in the characters (when they're not focusing on Buk himself-- who may not be the writer in some cases, but a character with the same name-- or Buk's longtime character Hank Chinaski) to keep them separate, at least while you're reading.

Deeply disquieting. Not nearly the book Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame or War All the Time is, but a good one for those who prefer the fiction to the poetry, or want to see just how brutal fiction could be in 1974. (They are also advised to seek out Joyce Carol Oates' best novel, Cybele, published the same year and never reprinted for exactly the same reason.) *** ... Read more

Solid, passionate criticism
I bought this book to read the author's thoughts on Bukowski and Miller and was quite impressed with the passion and clarity of his criticism.The best thing about it for me, however, was an introduction into the works ofB. Traven, a writer I had never heard of before this book.Traven, theauthor of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and many other novels, is aforgotten treasure in our literature.

I highly recommend this slendervolume to anyone interested in discussions of contemporary Americanliterature.Be warned, though:This is not dry, academic discourse. William Joyce, for all of his erudition, is a bloody, passionate thinkerand a living man.In other words, he's the perfect sort of fellow to writecriticism of Bukowski, Miller and B. Traven. ... Its the Script to the Movie
This is the script to the movie Barfly. It was a bit awkward for me to read something in script form. Its full of all the Bukowski cliches and there are a few laughs. Not that this is bad but I'd recomend Bukowski's Hollywood which is his account of the making of the Barfly movie, and even watching the film before I would reading the script. Really this is probably only worth your trouble if your a Bukowski completist.

Gritty, truthful, heartbreaking movie
The movie "BarFly" is based on three days on author's Charles Bukowski's life when he was 29 years old. I have seen this movie numerous times (at least 50) and still get something new out of each time. One of my buddies once said of the movie, "I felt like taking a shower after watching Barfly." Exactly!!! While some may find it too gritty, I find the movie an honest look at a troubled man's life. Henry Chinaski is like you or me but he is a raving alcoholic. There is a sweetness to him that comes out throughout the film and that is what I see and what I like to focus on. He finds his match in Wanda, also an alcoholic, and together they try and make an honest go of their reltionship. What follows is drunken mistakes and a bond that is held together by a Scotch and water. There is a purity and beauty to their relationship and it is evident that they truly care for one another but problems arise because of their drinking. To me Henry is an almost "Buddah" like character who lives in the moment and dosen't seem to hold too many regrets about his life. I admire his honesty and generosity throughout the movie. At first glance you may say he is out for himself but if you really watch old Henry you'll see flashes of kindness and sweetness. He's a man who dosen't seem to fit in to 9-5p.m. society and he makes no excuses for it, or as Jim the bartender said to Lilly the barfly, "he's as right as any of us." Keep an eye out for Bukowski himself who has a cameo in the film, a bar scene where Henry and Wanda first meet. I lived in L.A. for 10 years and have been by some of Bukowski's old haunts and the film captures the "working man's" bar scene in L.A. These types of places exist, you just have to do a little searching to find them. Henry Chinaski is a beautiful man in an ugly world. I highly recommend Barfly and suggest you view it with an open mind and an open heart. As Henry says in the last scene of the movie as he buys the bar numerous rounds of drinks, "to all my friends, to all my friends." If you would like a look at an honest, but troubled, man's life I highly suggest you check out the movie "Barfly."

The one to buy
Serious.
Well written.
And seriously well written.
With rigor, wit and infectious tenderness for his subject, Brewer takes us through the majority of Bukowski's work arranged chronologically by genre. There are real insights here - as specific works are regarded in comparison with contemporary writers - and in their broader context with past writers and styles. Critical where necessary, Brewer is not afraid or in awe of his subject - more than can be said of many Bukowski biographers/critics. He differs also from `the Bukowski basher' as Brewer does not pretend some moral objection to Bukowski's choice of language or lifestyle. Clearly, what's under examination here are the words, as written. And that is such a relief!
The most important aspect of this book however, must be the desire it creates in the reader to go back to the source and really READ the books.
My only regret in regards this book is that it was not written later, so as to include those books published posthumously. Maybe a second, expanded edition in the future? Let's hope.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough... It is the way literary criticism ought to be.

Brewer's book on Bukowski is top-notch literary criticism without any of the usual academic jargon.No pedantry either!Amazing.Academics shouldread it just to get an idea how to write.Bukowski fans should read it torealize how much more substantial Bukowski's work really is.

Gay Brewer has written one of the most readable and useful books in the Twayne series.Bukowski, a prolific writer, has often been beyond the reach of critics, either because of the literary world's shunning of him,or because there just doesn't seem to be much more to say about poems &short stories which speak for themselves.Brewer gives a plain-spoken anduseful critique of Buk's work, one which both scholars and the casualreader of Bukowksi will find useful. ... Not your typical children's book
The jury is still out on whether Bukowski is considered "fine writing". But I don't care and neither would Buke. "The Day It Snowed in L.A.", while written in simple words and illustrated by Bukowski himself, looks like a children's book, it is definitely rated R! Do not let your kids near this book. For us adults, Bukowski has written an adult fairy tale. As the reader above put it, this is a must for any Bukoswki collector/fan.

A funny and short comic strip book drawn and written by Buke
This is a series of drawings/cartoons with a storyline about a snowstorm in LA. Charles Bukowski is the cartoonist and author. It has funny bits in it and the pictures are childlike but offer another look at Buke and hisart. It is short and for the obsessive collector it is a must. It can befound in an online form on a search of Charles Bukowski. It is worth a lookbut unless you find an autographed copy don't spend more than a few bucksfor it. Informative and Intertaining
Sometimes when reading Bukowski, it becomes rather hard to tell the difference between his fiction and when he's embalishing on his experience.The best thing about this little book is that Christy tells us who thereal people in Buk's stories were, and what really happened. It's almosta compact bio too, and I don't have the patience to read one of those hugeones about Buk's life when I could be much more pleased getting it from theman himself, even if it's not always true.A good book, but a littleoverpriced in my opinion.

The buk book: musings on charles bukowski
A shallow treatment, written by what must be a graduate school reject.Somebody who--though he makes it a point to say he corresponded with Bukowski favorably--Bukowski would have hated.A phoney.I ordered it fora class I teach and found it completely unusable.A series ofanecdotes--rehashes of autobiograhpical short stories--strung together byhalf baked theroies.The lesson is that just because somebody loves toread an author doesn't mean they can write well at all about that author.

Good but uneven
I enjoyed this book but felt like the author, who states that he spent a lot of time with Buk, decided to throw together this uneven, short book to make a few bucks.The only pictures appear to be from a single night inthe early 70's, and appear to be pictures Buk probably didn't expect toever be published.Enough whining...it did offer some good insights intothe genius of Buk!

"The Buk Book: Musings On Charles Bukowski" is filled with every shade of Bukowski. While really more of a compact biography than a volume of "musings," Jim Christy's relaxing, yet tight documentation provides us with glimpses of an even more outrageous Buk than we hadimagined.

As a confidante and drinking buddy, Claude Powell'scontribution of twenty-four photos, depicting Buk mostly in a dishelveledalcoholic state, create a compelling visual component. Pictures not likelyto be found in a Black Sparrow publications any time too soon.

JimChristy's chronological text is smooth and refreshingly unrehearsed. Heslides cleanly through the years spanning from Bukowski's birth inAndernach,Germany on August 16,1920, to acquaintance Gundolf Freyermuth'sApril 1994 recollection of a physically "dimished" figure, butone still capable of laughing with "malicious delight." It wasseveral weeks after Freyermuth's visit to San Pedro, when Bukowskisuccumbed tothe lady featured in his last novel "Pulp." Death,even if you're Charles Bukowski, has the last say.

Along the way Christydrizzles in a handful of tense situations, a teaspoon of riot scenes andhumored accounts of mayhem squeezed from the days and nights in the life ofCharles Bukowski.
