3-0 out of 5 stars Good Adventure, Mediocre Allegory
This novel is a profound work of immense religious significance. It is, perhaps, second only to the Bible in popularity among Christians. It is also one of the greatest literary allegories.

At least, this is what most literary critics would have you believe.Make no mistake, I greatly enjoyed The Pilgrim's Progress. It succeeds on many levels as an adventure novel. Its attempt to be a piece of allegorical storytelling is where it fails.None of the symbolism is especially deep and the characters all are named after (and stand for) virtues or vices.Making every character nothing more than a talking symbol was a faulty move on author Bunyan's part (although after reading his introduction/apology, I believe this was his intention.)As a resultthe reader never invests any emotion into the characters and is prone to boredom as the story is told (although saying the pacing is quick would be a severe understatement.)The lack of extensive characterization and exposition makes the novel read more like the Sunday newspaper than a living story. There are also very few suprises in this novel.Christian's (the main character) destination is revealed to us when the story begins, and because Christianity centers on good conquering evil, the reader can have no doubt that the hero will end up where he needs to be.

The Pilgrim's Progress is not without its strong points. As stated above the pacing is very quick; the actual plot gets moving full-speed within the first three pages of the story and never lets up. For readers with short attention spans (such as myself) this is a great relief. The story's simplicity also works to its advantage. We are told that Christian must reach the Celestial City in order to escape damnation and be saved. The entire book is simply a chronicle of his adventures along the way.As stated, he meets virtues and vices and encounters all forms of moral peril (such as laziness) and environmental dangers (such as a fiery mountain that consumes those who trust in one of Christian's enemies). He even does battle with monsters.Another one of the book's strengths is its appeal to "mere" Christianity, that is, it has a message with which every Christian sect would agree. There are a few jabs at the Roman Catholic Church, but these are minor and extremely few.Bunyan himself was a Puritan, a child of Protestantism, so small remarks such as these should not be of any real suprise. They do not detract from the story in the least.

Of course, none of this attempts to be true, and the reader is told by the author himself that the story is presented in "the similitude of a dream".Is the story dream-like?Sure, it is fantastic enough. Is it a clever allegory? It is allegorical, but not terribly clever. If you're in for a good adventure than this book is for you.If you like your symbolism to have more thought than you may want to consult Lewis' Narnia series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look for a better edition
I'm not a Pilgrim's Progress expert, but this doesn't seem to be the best edition of this book. There are footnotes (including Bunyan's own notes) but they are often "late"; for example, footnotes to explain the archaic meaning of the word are often included on the second or third appearance of the word. Also, the editor has included indicators as to who is speaking in each paragraph (much like a stage script) but it is not consistent.

Shop around and see if you can find a better edition of Pilgrim's Progress.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keep in mind I Corinthians 13
I Corinthians 13 says the following:If I have all faith as to
remove mountains, but have not love, then I am nothing...

Bunyan's allegory about Christian's journey is
predominantly a journey about faith....He doesn't really
talk about one's day to day struggles, and the need to
bear each other's burdens....It is primarily a solo kind of
journey here, but this should not be too surprising
considering that the book is an allegory about one's
own INNER struggle to avoid temptation, as typified by
"the world".In Christ our flesh has been crucified, so we
are not to dwell on earthly things.

I think the book succeeds admirably in admonishing the
Christian to avoid temptation and stay on the path that is
narrow and straight.

With that said, this is a remarkably readable version, that
is at the same time true to the original 17th century text.
Only spelling and punctuation have been changed to aid
the modern reader.Grammar and paragraphing have not
been altered.Where a word's meaning has changed over
time, its archaic meaning is included as a footnote. Also,
where Bunyan quotes from the Bible, directly or indirectly,
the passages quoted from are cited. The editors have
done a remarkable job, although truthfully I haven't looked
at all the other versions out there....For me, this version
does the job. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable biography I have ever read
This easy to read book is a fine, worthy biography of John Bunyan.

I simply loved it.The book not only tells the story of John Bunyan well but also it does an excellent job of sketching his time- the critical period of English civil war. This English Civil War, in my opinion, is the forerunner of American Revolution some hundred years later. Yet few people are knowledgeable about key figures like Oliver Cromwell. This easy to read book will get you started and whet your appetite to read up more on this part of Anglo-American history.

My highest recommendation! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to a Classic!
I purchased this book for my nephews when they were 2 and 3, and my own children (2 and 3 also) loved it so much that I bought us a copy, and three more to give away!!The kids love to pore over the pictures, and though the story is written for kids probably 5 and up, my little ones will sit and listen to almost the whole thing! This is a retelling that greatly simplifies the real thing, but remains true to the main themes and tells the story well. The pictures are modern and humorous, so it's easy to relate. As a kid and even college student I was intimidated by Pilgrim's Progress, but I think that if I had been introduced to the story in a fun, non-threatening way, I would have been more motivated to plod through the original and reap the enormous benefits.

5-0 out of 5 stars A profoundly powerful parable of the many hardships
Pilgrim's Progress is a picturebook retelling of John Bunyan's classic narrative, intended for younger readers yet powerful for all ages. John Bunyan was a Baptist pastor who started to write the original tale when he was jailed in Bedford, England for preaching. Since then his story has become a widely beloved, metaphorical saga of a pilgrim named Christian in search of the Celestial City. Many monsters seek to lead him astray or devour him along his quest - the wicked Judge Hate-good, the giants of Doubting Castle, the diguesed and deceptive Flatterer, and even the Athiest strives to convince him that the Celestial City does not exist. Yet Christian also makes steadfast friends, such as Faithful, who speaks out against unjust laws at the cost of his life, and Hopeful, who keeps Christian's head above the darkest waters. Colorful, slightly cartoony illustrations decorate a story that despite its elements of whimsy, is at its heart a profoundly powerful parable of the many hardships encountered on the road the faithful walk. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic tale with atimeless moral

A man, burdened by the weight of the world on his shoulders, sets out on an epic journey to find salvation for himself, his wife and family. Along the way, he meets dark characters, scary situations, and a shady personality or two. Ultimately, he attains his goal and the gates of heaven swing open to welcome him.

Prolific author Tim Dowley has made the old new again with his wonderful retelling of John Bunyan's classic, The Pilgrim's Progress (Kregel, November 2004, hardcover, 80 pages). Twenty-first century kids (and their parents) will find themselves captivated by Dowley's modernized version of this seventeenth century classic. Illustrator Steve Smallman's brilliant artwork combines with Dowley's storytelling to create a fresh, vibrant effect.

While some of the prose (and wardrobe) have been updated, this version of The Pilgrim's Progress remains a wonderful way to emphasize morality and values with your children in a manner that will capture their attention and imagination. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This is a great classic and a must have for any Christian striving to follow Jesus Christ and His Word.Although the Old English is hard to get through at times, it is well worth the effort for the depth of wisdom contained within the pages. It is a great ecouragement and a sober warning of the trials and tribulations we expect to face on the narrow path we're called to walk.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Classic
The principles of overcoming the flesh endure from one generation to another as the message of victory in Jesus Christ continues. John Bunyan writes about the form it took in his generation. This classic in Christian and English literature describes the journey Christian takes to the celestial city--that permanent home of believers in Jesus.

In the New Testament we're told of the war between the flesh and the spirit. Bunyan puts it into the context of his day in this classic work. This book is a genuine encouragement to followers of Jesus in any generation. Overcomers from previous generations can continue to encourage us with legacies of this nature as we tread the path in our generation they successfully made in theirs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a Classic After All These Years
Well worth the short time it takes to read it. Had heard of this book all my life, but had never read it. Now I know what I was missing. Not that there is anything new here in terms of faith or theology--there's not.But the manner in which this story is told is entertaining and captivating, still, after all these years. Truths we have been taught and learned through our life's experience are here, all told in a most entertaining and enlightening way.It makes one smile, laugh and, at times, touches one's heart. If it is your first time to read it or your first time in a long time, it's well worth the read. Well worth it. We're all pilgrims and we are all traveling through a foreign land...

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilgrims Progress--A Blessing
This audio book has been a joy. It happens to be one of my faviorte things to listen to. All my friends at college know lines from it because I talk about it constantly. The story begins with Christian going on pilgrimage in search of heaven. I would encourage all to get this book. The narrator Edward de Souza is wonderful. The applications John Bunyan makes with the Christian life are so practical and real. As a young person its principles have encouraged me as I go about life's journey. I'm reminded of all those who went on pilgrimage, and the reason they continued or left the way. We will find the waters of life deeper or shallower according to our faith in the King of the Place (Heaven). Buy the book. I don't think you will be disappointed. If you don't like it, let me know I will take it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Christianity
This is a must read for any age group. It conveys the truth of the christian faith in a clear and concise manner. This would be an excellent book for a youth group to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is the modern english version
I just bought this edition, and was disapointed to learn that it is an updated, modern english edition of the original. I prefer to read books as they were first written, whenever possible.

From the brief comparisons I've made, it seems that this edition comes across somewhat less colorful than Bunyan's original, as the revisionist appears to have tried to simplify the vocabulary rather than merely updating it.

5-0 out of 5 stars good read
I read this book for a class but I am glad to have read. This book is a great historical read. I found that it helped renew my defences as a christian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Allegorical Fiction
This is a masterpiece. Believe it or not, in some ways I found it more invigorating than Pilgrim's Progress. Mainly because the conclusion and progression of the tale were slightly less obvious.

Bunyan masterfully illustrates personalities and the conflict/struggle that is going on.

This is great imaginative fiction with good spiritual application. This would be a great book to go through as a group and study/discuss.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, Not Great
This is a good book, but not great. If you are like most people, you are probably only aware of Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress". There may be some justification to why most people are not familiar with this book. It is not bad, but it is not in the same league as other classics.

Of course, I like Frank Peretti's more modern tone, but I also allow adjustments for a book over 300 years old (many excellent classics are even older). But, this book goes over and over the same material much too often. Yes, repetition can be good for the soul. But, at some points, I was thinking it was a bit too much. Some of the applications, though, were well presented and in a way you rarely see in books and sermons today. That made it worth reading.

The names given to the individuals were very creative. They get your mind to think how the wiles of the Evil One work their way even today. The end summary is still very accurate: the Evil One will not be contained until God does it, much like God did not take away Paul's "thorn". ... Read more

Book Description
"Grace Abounding continues the tradition of Christian testimonial classics tracing back to the Confessions of Saint Augustine. John Bunyanphy, written while he was imprisoned for holding unsanctioned religious services and first published in 1666, is the unsparing account of one manjourney from atheism and blasphemy to devout Christianity. A reckless and profane youth leads Bunyan to despair in the belief that he has committed unforgivable sins. But two religious books belonging to his wife set Bunyan on the straight and narrow and a lifetime of pious devotion. Honest and unblinking in his self-assessment, Bunyan saw it as his duty to tell his story, warts and all, in order to comfort all those struggling with their faith. This classic of religious literature continues to be essential reading for the faithful and for students of great English literature.English preacher and writer JOHN BUNYAN (1628¿1688) is the author of nearly sixty books, nine of which were written while he was in prison for unlicensed preaching. His works include The Pilgrim1678e and Death of Mr. Badman (1680), and The Holy War (1682)." ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars FALSE ADVERTISING
The above Title of this book clearly states "(3 Volume Set)" and yet I only received the 3rd volume. The ISBN that they have listed is for the 3 volume set and not just one volume.I called Amazon (actually they called me, it was nifty) and complained. They saw that it was a mistake, seemingly a common one judging by what some people have already said here. And now they are sending me all 3 volumes. My real complaint is that now I have to wait an entire month before receiving it and I needed volume 1 for school!!!Can't beat the price, so I will have to borrow a book until mine arrives. If this happens to you just call Amazon and force them to send you all 3 books because the ISBN is for a 3 volume set and not just one volume!! DONT LET THEM FOOL YOU!!

5-0 out of 5 stars MAKE SURE YOUR ORDER IS THE (3 VOLUME SET)!
If you are paying close to eighty dollars, make sure that your order says (3 Volume Set).If not, then you are only recieving volume one!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Contents Are ...
"The Works of John Bunyan", edited by George Offor

This review intends to inform readers of the contents of these three volumes so they may buy these books without the risk of guessing.Fortunately for me I guessed correctly!

To answer your first question, reader: Yes, "Pilgrim's Progress" IS INCLUDED in volume 3!Part I, Christian's journey, begins on page 89 after an 88 page introduction by the editor.Part II, Christiana's journey begins on page 168.And part III, The Life and Death of Mr. Badman, begins later in the volume on page 586. All parts are included.(Note that the latter is not commonly included as a part of "Pilgrim's Progress" in most books.)

Having said the above, if you are *only* looking for "Pilgrim's Progress", especially parts I and II, then these collected works are not for you. These books are physically HEAVY to hold, much too heavy for comfortable reading; you will need a stand, table or desk to avoid cramping your hands while reading.

The print, while quite legible, is small; some sections seem 6pt or smaller, especially the footnotes. As is common with many reprints of early editions, a few letters per page are faint, and a few have slight blotches such as a filled "e" center or a slightly thicker "t" crossbar, etc.As mentioned before, the print is still quite legible; if you are looking for the collected works please do not let the print deter you!

The sturdy binding and covers on the volumes handles the unexpectedly heavy contents well.I suppose the dimensions are roughly 9x7x1.125".

The copyright information says "Reprinted from the edition of 1854 published by W.G Blackie and Son, Glasgow".Reprints from the middle of the 19th century somehow seem appropriate for the writings of Bunyan; it gives one a feeling of history. And I *DO* love old books!

The editor describes the difficulty of obtaining 1st edition prints of Bunyan, especially since most editions were cheaply and badly printed "for the poor".Another interesting editorial comment is that Bunyan was somewhat of a misogynist.

As expected from a 1854 reprint, there are many woodcuts throughout the volumes, and they are excellent.

The 19th century compiler and editor, George Offor, supplies many footnotes. The footnotes, especially in the "Pilgrim's Progress", are often of a devotional nature such as "Take heed reader!", etc.But there are also many other footnotes clarifying rare words, doctrinal points, cross references, circumstances of writing, etc. Many of the footnotes have initials next to them, presumably indicating selected editorial comments of other commentators.(I was unable to find a clear list relating the initials to full names.)

Volumes I & II are entitled "Experimental, Doctrinal and Practical".Volume III is titled "Allegorical, Figurative and Symbolical".

To help you decide for yourself whether to purchase these books, here are the contents:

For though, as yet, I was nothing but a poor painted hypocrite, yet I loved to be talked of as one that was truly godly. For many years, John like all Christians struggled with his sinful nature. In Grace Abounding, he honestly declares his shortcomings, and knows that he must overcome them to fulfill his destiny. But one morning, when I was again at prayer, and trembling under the fear of this, that no word of God could help me, that piece of a sentence darted in upon me,My grace is sufficient.Throughout John s life he realized how vulnerable he was, and how great God s grace is. First, I confessed I was fallen, but not fallen away....Secondly, I confessed that I had put Jesus Christ to shame by my sin, but not to open shame....Discover God s abounding grace for you through this classic work that has guided countless many over the past 300 years.Download Description

4-0 out of 5 stars Grace
This is the autobiography of John Bunyon and his life.It is about his life before and after Christ and the grace of God upon his life.John wrote this classic while in prison. He went to prison for preaching the gospel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Demonstrates the importance of knowing and meditating on God's Word
I've been looking forward to reading this book for years ever since I read Bunyan's classis Pilgrim's Progress, I've wanted to read Grace Abounding to learn more about his incredible man of faith.I also recently read The Hidden Smile of God by John Piper who introduces the reader to three incredible men of God including Bunyan. So actually reading the journey of Bunyan himself in his own words was thrilled...but difficult at the same time.Bunyan struggled greatly with the concept of grace; he wrestled with understanding how God's grace could be sufficient to save a sinner as great as he.Grace Abounding is a peering into the soul of Bunyan as he goes through this deep personal battle wanting to believe that God was able to cleanse him of all unrighteousness, but constantly confronted with the holiness of the divine.

Just over half way through the book, Bunyan surrenders to the will of God in his life.He finally and fully grasp that the grace of God was truly sufficient. Then his heart is set aflame to share this grace with others and he becomes one of the great preachers and writers of all time, even though he goes on to spend a dozen years confined to prison for preaching contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church.Personally, it was interesting to see the cultural battle Bunyan faced at the time looking back from my vantage 500 years later to see that America is the beneficiary of his great struggles with the prevailing church of the day.As Bunyan sat in prison, he wrote about the great journey from a metal worker to a pastor of the gospel of Christ - in allegory form for the Pilgrim's Progress and in autobiographical form in Grace Abounding.

I can understand why many believe this book is a classic - the thoughts and insights that Bunyan has into the Word of God were profound and significant. It was amazing to read how Scripture flowed through his mind irrigating every thought so that his life bore much fruit.I wouldn't recommend the book to a younger reader, it is a difficult read, but well worth the effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grace abounding is a great book
Grace Abounding....is an excellent autobiography of John Bunyan and his spiritual struggle to obtain assurance of his salvation in light if his belief that he had committed the unpardonable sin.Recommended to anyone who may be facing the same struggle with this question. Each paragraph of the text is numbered and, thus, it is easy to put the book down at any point and pick it back up later without losing train of thought.Since the book was written over 300 years ago, it is interesting to have insight into the thoughts of a Christian who lived during that time and to compare with current Christian thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars There's hope for you too in God's Abounding Grace
A lot of us are familiar with John Bunyan as the author of The Pilgrim's Progress, whose influence in Christendom is second to the Bible. Bunyan was a preacher, a prolific writer and a shining saint for God. However when we read this book we find out that he was an atheist and infidel in his youth, enjoying sin and rebellious towards God. Inwardly he suffered from tormented nightmares of demons and judgment, but outwardly he went on pretty much as any other sinner, taking delight in sin and being the ringleader of mischief. Several times he nearly lost his life, and even though there were several close calls, still he did not turn to God. After his marriage, he participated in religious activities, went through the motions of attending church and generally lived as he pleased, each time successfully shrugging off pangs of guilt. One day, after church, while playing a sport, a voice seemed to call out to him from heaven to his soul, which said, "Wilt thou leave thy sins and go to heaven, or have thy sins and go to hell?" Bunyan was convinced it was the Lord Jesus looking down on him in displeasure. What follows details his sinking into despair, his desparate attempts at working his way into God's good graces, and his struggles with temptation and doubt. In a strange sort of way, it is comforting to read about Bunyan's struggles and identify with them because you can see how he turned out so greatly used by God. He rationalized, made excuses and tried every way to justify himself. Bunyan did not try to gloss over his motivations but gave an honest account of his struggles from avowed sinner, to religious hypocrite before he was finally converted. He describes in great detail his doubts and despair, his yearning to be converted to Jesus Christ, and then being assured of his salvation by reading the Bible and praying. Reading this book will help you realize how God's grace can abound and save even the most wretched of sinners and gives us abounding hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great theologian
I can't say that I have read this book...yet, but what I can say is that anyone who endeavours to read any work of Dr. Haykin is in for a real treat. He was my prof. for Church History, and a man whom I am thoroughly impressed with.He is a humble, diplomatic, professional person with a strong heart for God and His glory.
His knowledge on Church History is incredible, especially his understanding of the Reformation, the Puritans, and the Particular Baptist movements. But he cannot be limited there even.I could literally listen to him speak for hours.
I strongly recommend anything by Dr. Haykin as you will become well informed on the topic that he writes about, whether it's Cromwell, Bunyon, Edwards or anyone else.

God bless and enjoy. ... Read more

Product Description
According to tradition Cervantes first conceived his comic masterpiece in jail - his avowed intent being to debunk the romances of chivalry. From first publication Don Quixote was a best-seller, initially taken as a knockabout account of a mad Spanish gentleman and his cowardly peasant squire, but later reinterpreted as an enlightenment text, a representation of universal human nature, a myth of a tragic hero defending man's nobler aspirations, a study in alienation, a spiritual autobiography, a metaphor for Spain's imperial decline, an experimental novel that shaped later prose fiction, a tragedy and comedy in one, and a demonstration that ambiguity and uncertainty can lie at the centre of great art and that great art can be comic. Smollet's vigorous and lively translation brilliantly catches the feeling and tone of the Spanish original. It is a comic novelist's homage to a comic novelist.Download Description

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for anyone to read
We've read this book to our son and he has really enjoyed it.He doesn't yet fully understand everything and we had to stop and explain a lot to him, but it is something that we plan on reading over and over again as our kids continue to grow.
I read a review that stated that a main flaw in this book was the lack of one on one relationship with Christ.I can understand what they are saying, but I think what you have to keep in mind is that while we are here on earth and in our day and age we do not physically see Christ. He was once here walking and living on this earth, but He is now in heaven. He uses other means now to maintain a personal relationship with us. For example, we can know Christ through His word and through prayer.Just as in the book, He often also sends other Christians along in our life to help us and encourage us.This book is a good example of a walk of faith. We can't see and physically touch Christ right now, but when we are in heaven we WILL see Him just as Bunyan talks about in the book.Christian persevered in his walk without physically seeing Christ and he was rewarded in the end for his faith. For now, how much greater our reward is for those who have not seen Him and yet believed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Life's Companion
Enthralling. This book will help every Christian deal with the battles of being a Christian in this life and all the struggles that go with it. It teaches you never to give up even when you feel like you can't go on. Life's struggles are not a new occurrence, but as timeless as human existence itself. It teaches you not to be too concentrated on your struggles, but to look at the great prize which is Heaven and not be distracted or enticed by the struggles of life nor the easy way out. Excellent. It is a must read for every Christian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable and human parable. A story for all times.
The first time that I encountered Christian and his pilgrimage was as a preface and a family favorite in the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Unfortunately, it was not until twenty-something years later that I actually got around to reading the book itself. If I were you, I would not wait that long.

The first part of the current combined book appeared in 1678. Bunyan, a nonconformist Protestant minister who was imprisoned for preaching without a license, wrote at least the first part of the book in jail. The second part was first published in 1684. It is likely the most popular allegory ever written, and is still one of the best selling books of all time.

What makes it so popular? The obvious key to its popularity is its simple, crisp style. Even accounting for the language changes between the seventeenth century and now, it is not a struggle to read Progress and it flows well for the modern reader. Although the book is allegory, the characters are full of little realistic details that make them feel quite human. Incidentally, I was reading this book as I was walking some of the old pilgrimage trails of Europe and it was interesting to me how vivid and applicable his version of the pilgrimage experience is. The Slow of Despair rang remarkably true, as did characters such as Talkative and Mr. Worldly Wisdom.

The Oxford University Press edition is bound with a scholarly introduction which is, for a change, worth reading. It also came with explanatory notes and a glossary which were helpful for the modern reader who is not familiar with the everyday language of the period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating
This book is a true classic. John Bunyan spins a wonderful tale of the spiritual walk to heaven. The language may be a bit hard and it won't be that easy of a read, but it is definately worth the while!

It is spiritually edifying and also quite captivating.

A must read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
Pilgrim's Progress is without a doubt one of the true classics of time--an allegory that has remained a best seller years after its introduction.

My first introduction to Pilgrim's Progress was as a child in parochial school.I had to do a book report on it in 5th grade and ended up reading numerous times for various projects throughout grade school.

The reader follows the main character--aptly named "Christian"--on his journey to the Celestial City.

Along the way, Christian passes through the many trials of life, symbolized by intruiging characters and places along the way.An early temptation is the "City of Destruction", which Christian narrowly escapes with his life. The various characters are perhaps the most fascinating portion of the book--Pliable, Giant Despair, Talkative, Faithful, Evangelist, and numerous others provide the reader with a continual picture of the various forces at work to distract (or perhaps, encourage)Christian on his ultimate mission.

Of course, the theology (for those of the Christian faith) of Pilgrim's Progress is a constant source of debate, the book is nonetheless a classic of great English writing.

It's not a quick read--that's for sure--however, I certainly would recommend that one read it in its original form.Don't distort the beauty of the old English language with a modern translation. ... Read more

Book Description
Fifty-five years ago, Helen L. Taylor took John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress and simplified the vocabulary and concepts for young readers, while keeping the storyline intact. The result was a classic in itself, which has now sold over 600,000 copies. It’s both a simple adventure story and a profound allegory of the Christian journey through life, a delightful read with a message kids ages 6 to 12 can understand and remember. 5-0 out of 5 stars Little Pilgrim's Progress: From John Bunyan's Classic (The Message) by Helen Taylor
This is a great book for children to get the message of "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan. It is written so they can understand it and gets them caught up in the adventure and stories in the book.I use it to teach lessons on Sunday at my church. We read it together and then discuss what the story might mean to them and how they can use what little Christian learns in his life lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars character qualities
we used this as a read aloud with our kids ages 4-11 they love it.2-3 page chapters make it a great bed time story. We talked about christian characteristics and worldly charateristics these things are rarely taught.Great Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased with availability
I used this book for VBS 15 years ago and pulled it out of the mothballs to persuade a new cluster of churches to give it a try so I was gratified that I could still get plenty of copies for the directors and actors.

5-0 out of 5 stars OutSTANDING Book!
We are reading it for homeschooling and are really enjoying it!My 6 year old son is completely into it and loves to describe the characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars My children found it gripping
I have strong memories of this book from when I read it as a child, very different from other books, and fascinating, one of my favorites, couldn't get it out of my mind. When my children were young, I remembered this book and obtained a copy. The first time I read it to them, they were only 3 1/2 and 5 1/2.I knew they were young, so was amazed at how much they liked the book and would beg me again and again to read "just one more" chapter.(I would still suggest this book for slightly older children, maybe in the younger elementary years.) But it really is an amazingly gripping book for children, with lots of important lessons that can be learned and discussed. My son, after reading about the character "Help" early in the book, asked whether could change his name to "Help"!(We suggested that he have it as a second middle name). Then later he wanted to add the name "Greatheart". Anyhow, I will end with saying I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Published in 1680, two years after the The Pilgrim's Progress told the story of Pilgrim's journey to heaven, this companion piece describes the progress of the wicked Mr. Badman through the world to his death and damnation. Set out as a dialogue between two earnest gentlemen—Mr. Attentive and Mr. Wiseman—Bunyan's work is a colorful and dramatic discourse on the various vices of a bad man's life, offering fascinating insight into 17th-century Puritanism.
