5-0 out of 5 stars Lucid, insightful explication
Cleman is one of the foremost authorities on Cable (Cable himself being a much-underappreciated U.S. author) and draws the reader to new insights and appreciations without recourse to flash or intellectual postering. Cleman (as educator and critic)and Cable should both be considerednational treasures. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
George Washington Cable (1844-1925) was an American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native Louisiana. His fiction has been thought to anticipate that of William Faulkner. Cable was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. In 1865, he went into journalism, writing for the New Orleans Picayune. By 1879, he was a well established writer. His sympathy for civil rights and opposition towards the harsh racism of the era showed in his writings, earning him resentment by many white Southerners. In 1884, Cable moved to Massachusetts. He became friends with Mark Twain, and the two writers did speaking tours together. Among Cable's most important works are: The Amateur Garden (1914), Gideon's Band: A Tale of the Mississippi (1914), Madame Delphine (1881) and Bonaventure: A Tale of Louisiana (1888). ... Read more

Product Description
This volume was published in 1884.

Book excerpts:
A city in the United States is, without pretension
or intention, picturesque and antique. A quaint
Southern-European aspect is encountered in the narrow
streets of its early boundaries, on its old Place d'Armes,
along its balconied fa9ades, and about its cool, flowery
inner courts.

Among the great confederation of States whose Anglo-
Saxon life and inspiration swallows up all alien immigra-
tions, there is one in which a Latin civilization, sinewy,
valiant, cultured, rich, and proud, holds out against extinc-
tion. There is a people in the midst of the population of
Louisiana, who send representatives and senators to the
Federal Congress, and who vote for the nation's rulers.
They celebrate the Fourth of July; and ten days later,
with far greater enthusiasm, they commemorate that great
Fourteenth that saw the fall of the Bastile. Other citi-
zens of the United States, but not themselves, they call
Americans.

Who are they ? Where do they live ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I enjoyed this book. It was enjoyable history. It came on time, in good condition, thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars TheOtherAmerican Revolution
All our textbooks in school cover the American Revolution from England emphasizing the 13 colonies. This book deals in fascinating detail with the revolution that took place in New Orleans area with the French and Spanish, during the late 1700's.The book was written before 1900, but don't let that scare you.The author writes well and knows his history!

5-0 out of 5 stars Creoles of Louisiana
This was bought for a family member whose family had ties in Louisiana. She loved it.She already has several of Cable's books and was happy to get this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars CREOLES
This is a fantastic book on Creoles, it is well researched and very enlightening. The word Creole means the original European natives of New Orleans, NOT light skinned African Americans, now I'm sure many light skinned blacks from New Orleans has Creole ancestry. The word has been eroneously used, when I tell people that my grandmother was of Creole and Austrian ancestry, they are like, wow, I did not know you were black..im like, uh, im not black, it's so annoying, and the media perpetuates the idea, that the word means any light skinned black person from Louisiana.Everyone in Louisiana should have to read this book in history class, then they could get educated on the word, and spread the information the the obtuse media.Highly recommended. ...
