Book Description
Behavioral Neurobiology provides a novel treatment of the neural basis of behavior. The pedagogical premise of the book is that general insights into the neuronal organization of behavior can be gained by examining neural solutions that have evolved in animals to solve problems encountered in their particular environmental niches. Therefore, rather than organizing the chapters around general themes, such as "Motor Systems" or "Learning and Memory," the author presents in-depth "case studies" of individual animals; themes clearly emerge, but take on additional meaning by being considered in a real-world behavioral context.

While each chapter focuses on the world of a single animal, chapters are clustered into three major thematic sections: Sensory Worlds, Motor Strategies, and Behavioral Plasticity. At the end of each section is a "Coda" highlighting general principles of neuronal organization common to the chapters within it.

In writing the book, Dr. Carew has drawn on his many years of undergraduate teaching at Yale University. Behavioral Neurobiology does not presume a strong biological background, and is therefore suitable for a general undergraduate audience. However, the material is treated in sufficient depth to make the book useful for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in behavioral neurobiology or neuroethology as well. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars King Charles' Favorite Classical Poets.
Ben Jonson was the ideal Cavalier poet and died in 1637.Robert Herrick was one of his ardent followers. This was a great era for 'carpe diem' poetry.Herrick added 'joie de vivre' to amorous songs, and some of his poetry don't sound like they were written by an Episcopal minister.

Thomas Carew was an admirer of John Donne who fathered the metaphysical form of writing poems. His society verses were popular with the nobility, prized for their petulant wit.He made an important contribution to the 17th century genre of poems about country homes, an important aspect of the Cavalier poets repertoire.

Most of John Suckling's poems were published in a posthumous volume after he committed suicide in 1642.His verse smacks of the court, being witty, decorous, sometimes naughty; all requisites for the courtier poet.Though his 'oeuvre' is comparitively small, he is an exemplary lyric poet, as well as one of the most vivid personalities of his age. They all prevaricated and exaggered, as was common at the time, but they were favorites of the court of King Charles, the essential Cavalier of them all.

Richard Lovelace spent much time in prison but he wrote lovely, lyrical poetry and uniquely philosophical views which saw him to his untimely death in poverty. His poems display the poet's subtle sense of humor and eye for natural imagery. This is a nice little volume for the student of literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfection of light elegance
This is how the back book-jacket describes the book, " In the mid- seventeenth century, the poets associated with the court of Charles I of England, kinown as the Cavaliers, were strongly influenced by the Cassicism of Ben Jonson. Their verse , often concerned with the vagaries of love, is characteristically charming, witty, graceful and elegant. This volume contains a rich sampling of more than 120 works by four Cavalier poets: Robert Herrick, Thomas Carew, Sir John Suckling and Richard Lovelace.
The work also contains brief biographical sketches of the four poets. Among the works are such well- known often anthologized pieces as Herrick's ' Gather ye rosebuds while ye may' , Suckling's'Why so Pale and Wan Fair Lover? ' Carew's ' A Cruel Mistress' Herrick's ' Delight in Disorder', Lovelace's 'Lucasta poems'.
Enjoyable reading.

I can't imagine many people buying this book in the first place, but I purchased it to help with a project I'm working on. I was quite excited to see that there was a new edition of Thomas Carew's poems on the market. There's a very well done collection of cavalier verse that was recently put out. It's a Norton Critical Edition entitled Ben Jonson and the Cavalier Poets, released in 1974 that has a great selection. This book, however, is merely a reprint of an edition printed in 1899. Nowhere in the Amazon description of the book does it mention this, which I find downright scandalous. Scholars take their books seriously, and if the edition in question is a reprint, especially a reprint of a 100 year old book that is most certianly outdated, it should be noted somewhere on the page. I am severly disappointed. I doubt anyone at Amazon will come across this review, but I hope if they do that they address this, because it is a serious issue that could be easily remedied.

Book Description
At the turn of the century, the pioneering neuroscientist Ramon y Cajal articulated the hypothesis that growth processes involved in the development of the central nervous system may persist into adulthood, where they might be retained to mediate the formation and maintenance of memory. Over the decades since Cajals seminal suggestion, extensive experimental attention has been directed at elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying both neuronal development and learning and memory. Many exciting technical and conceptual advances have been made on each front. Thus, as we approach the end of this century, the field is now poised to assess the status of Cajals provocative hypothesis directly. This volume reflects a highly interdisciplinary dialog among experts in the fields of development and learning and memory, who came together not only to assess the validity of the general hypotheses that development and learning might share mechanistic features, but also to identify issues, preparations, and paradigms that would allow for a rigorous evaluation of ways to advance the hypothesis, on the one hand, and determine its fundamental limitations, on the other. Towards this end, the volume is organized into four levels of analysis: behavioral, systems, cellular, and molecular. At each level, neuroscientists from the general fields of development and learning engage in lively exchange of ideas which serve to highlight the similarities and differences of both the concepts and the experimental approaches used in their diverse fields. The result of this endeavor is a collection of seminal chapters and summary reports that provide a novel synthesis of important advances in two exciting areas of modern neuroscience. Goal of this Dahlem Workshop: to evaluate the validity of the general thesis that mechanisms utilized in the development of the nervous system are reutilized in the adult to mediate formation and maintenance of memory. ...
